What was it that made you want to start riding bikes?
I know for me it is in my blood, my old man rode bikes and my mum use to ride her brothers bikes occassionally.
As a kid growing up everytime I saw a bike riding down the street I would just stop and stare and think to myself...one day, one day when Im old enough I wanna ride a bike.
I started out on a Yamy YZ80 and progressed to 125's 250's and had a play on my uncles CR500. When I was old enough to get a licence it was pretty evident going by my passion for 2 wheeled machines and my walls n ceiling being covered in bike posters that I would go for my bike licence. Moving on from their I got into road bikes which I still am.
So I guess there was some influence from my parents that got me interested in bikes...... what influenced your decision to become a biker?
Like I said its in my bones...... :)

Ever since I discovered wheels and engines, I've been fascinated with most forms of transport. Don't know why as I'm a bit the odd one out in the family. My Mum likes bikes though and I learned to ride on her BSA Bantam. Dad was never particularly interested but didn't mind my enthusiasm.
Dunno.
Growing up in Italy where everyone's got a ringa-dinga two-stroke 'motorino' of some sort or another, it was inevitable!
Remember going for rides with my mates from village to village, riding thru' the hills on all the back roads to avoid the 'carabinieri'....
Wanted to start on crossers/trials at first, but never did. Quickly moved on to road bikes as i got a bit older tho'..
Seem to have passed the 'bug' onto 2 out of 3 of my nephews too :innocent:
Incidentally, most of my italian cousins still ride too! It was a fantastic feeling to go for a blat together a couple of years back...another reason i can't bring myself to sell the RF - too many memories!!!!

definately in the blood, all my sisters have riden at some point, my dad has had a couple (now has an older XJ in Nelson), even his sister now has a bike again, after many years not having one.
My great grandad used to ride in Invergiggle... back in the earlier days of Burt Munroe, they used to blat around together apparently...
So yup its in the blood... any bike i see makes my blood move just the little bit quicker... thinking who/what....kewl!
Just always been that way  hopefully always will

My Dad and his brother both had Indians, my Mum rode a Vespa and my big brother had six assorted road and trail bikes over a few years (these days he still gets around on wheels - the kind attached to a chair!*) Even my little sister had a Harley.
I'm the only one in my family who's never owned a bike! Maybe I'm just a slow learner... :scooter:
*P.S. Don't worry... it was a car crash - not a bike

my dad influenced me.
grew up with him as a sterotyped harley rider. the whole long hair, beard, harley riding dad.
took me on the back of his harley and fell in love with the speed, the danger, i know it sounds whack, but the attention he used to get with a loud bike.
now i ride sports bikes and him and i are always telling each other, theirs is better.
still have a soft spot for the old classics though, like the triumph bonnie.
Bikes are not so much in my blood - but the machinery is.I am a 3rd generation motor mechanic - my father was a mechanic,my grandfather was a mechanic,my brother is a mechanic, and my closest cousin is a mechanic. In our family we grew up around boats and trucks....we went with the truck side.Bikes are ''easy'' - I can see the machinery,I can pull them apart and put them together quickly...mix n match, modify, adapt. An added bonus is they are good fun to ride as well.

Freedom, adrenaline and speed are in my blood. Bikes are the epitomy of these combined.
I was out on a date with a nice young lady a month ago, sitting in a cafe. As hard as it was I managed to avoid looking at all the babes walking past, but damned if i couldn't stop myself checking out the bikes......

I was into horses(well ponies actually) from an early age. Being the youngest of 5, 3 girls & 2 boys, I got the hand-me-down ponies. When I was about 9 or 10 my bro's got a little honda 50 and they wouldnt let me ride it. They all told me I was too small & girls dont ride bikes so I pinched it one day & promptly crashed it into the blackberry bush! Eventually they started to let me have little turns on it & I was hooked! Sold my last horse at age 15 and bought a little ER 125 to get my licence. Sold that & bought a GSXR400. Have had a few other bikes over the years and have never let anything or anyone stop me riding my bikes!
I think I have given the bike bug to my kids too, the youngest in particular! When he was a baby he would make this strange grunting sound from his tummy whenever he saw a bike. He was the same with tools....loves tools!
I was sitting watching Crusty Demons one day & he came & sat on my lap & started watching too. I wrapped my arms around him, as you do, & next minute he cracked a fat!!:eek5:  He fancies himself a bit of a crusty demon when he falls off his pushbike.
My grandfather was a RAAF Pilot and something about airshows still stirs my blood. my dad was a truck driver/mechanic and boat enthusiast. Still have the boating/fishing in the blood too.

dunno if its in my blood...dunno what my bloodline is. but dads always had bikes, all jap bikes. i used to wait at the gate for him to come home, and hed sit me on the tank and take me around the yard.
i grew up on pushbikes, and have never had the desire to get my car license, so a motorbike seemed a natural next step. dad taught me to ride, and gave me his bike. when im ready to step up...i will be giving him mine. he hasnt ridden in months now and i know he misses it. im constantly giving him the keys and saying, take her out! but he just hangs em up.

i built my first bike - a suzuki PE175 in an RM125 chassis by working at atomic bike wreckers (that's 25 years ago now) and getting paid in parts.
pushed it up to westlake boys high school main feild and taught myself to ride.
i was keen all right.

It's part of who I am, both my Grand parents rode bikes in the 1920s, my father & aunt rode bikes as well. My father raced bikes & my aunt's ex was NZ trails champion in the late 50s.
When i was a small kid my father was a motorcycle cop for the ChCh city council MOT and every day he finished work i'd be waiting for him, he'd always take me for a ride up the street on the tank of the patrol bike.
As i was growing up he started restoring Brit bikes, I'd watch every move he made, He'd take me for trips away on each bike as it was done, then just prior to my Tenth birthday he brought me my first bike (YZ80H) and got me into racing, The neighbour over the road raced under the banner of the local Kawasaki dealership and I ended up spending all my available time learning there. And with the old man's connections knew & got to meet all the big names in the local circles.
Went to invitational MX meets, spent time with the Guan Hoe team (Malaysian GP race team) & John Woodley etc, Knew Bob Burns personally, met John Surtees etc.
Then when I came of age & was legal to ride on the road I was off & doing it and still going strong today, yep it's in the blood but it's more than that, it's a way of life

Grandfather built me my first one, lawnmower engine in a frame fabricated at the Port Kembla Steel works where he was the Senior Engineer.
I don't recall much about it - it was 1962 and i was two years old.
I do remember burning myself on the exhaust and it was rusty.
He bought me my first 'real' bike too. See attached - a few years later.
I loved the centrifugal clutch.
Estimate i've done over 1,000,000km on 2 wheels in the 45 years since.
In oz - we call it a 'tragic'.
My mother still looks at me and says - "It's all your Grandfather's fault.'

Dad and brothers were the trap for me, all the stories and fun they had. Just seemed natural to have a crack at it as early as I could. Unfortunately that was a bit earlier than I should have and my brothers bike ended up in the pool. Bit hard to explain why his bike was so clean but didnt go. lol
Things have improved a bit since then.

When i was young i had to help the old man getting the cows in for milking. When i was finally allowed to ride by myself, it was on an old shitter Ag 100.
A couple of my mates in high school were into motorcross, and as soon as i hit the powerband for the first time it was all over.
Couldnt wait to get my liscence, even got it b4 my older brother(that pissed him off abit).
Ever since then ive had a bike of some sort.

*is a bit slow*
The only person I know of in my family that ever rode bikes was my grandmothers brothers, apparantly they used to ride Triumphs, and her oldest brother had an accident (no other vehicles involved) and died on x-mas eve. Everyone in my family has remembered that and have been dead set against bikes ever since.
Back in Zimbabwe the biker scene was tiny... by tiny I mean I only ever knew 3 people with bikes bigger than 150cc dirt bikes. And they lived up our road, so everyday at 5pm I'd sit on our wall just to watch them ride up the road on thier way home from work...
Eventually about 3 years later I had my first ride (as pillion) on a FJ1100, and knew from that moment on that nothing would stop me from having a bike... I brought bike mag's every month (they only came out once a month back home, and it was a South African mag called "Bike SA" or something).
Of course my family hated the idea and completely ignored my obvious passion for bikes brushing it off as a phase. Well I still havn't grown out of my "phase" and hopefully I never do :):blip:
Its in my blood now, got the virus in Rarotonga, hired two of those point n' go scooter's, had hell fun, David Hiscock is a cousin of my fathers so i guess there could be a trickle of bike blood there somewhere......:scooter:

For genes, Dad rode one solely as transport when he was 20ish. It was the cheapest form of transport he could get. Until he started coming home in ambulances, and his mum had enough and bought him a car. My uncle (Dad's brother) loves his motorcycles, and has old ones, Triumph, AJS, I dunno what, about 4. Loves riding them as well, and very single
I fell in love with them as the kid in the back seat of the car, being passed when in the country on a holiday, and driving around the country. Was offered a ride on a bike by my uncle at some point, but I was afraid and didn't take him up on it.
Started using bicycles at the equivalent of the start of intermediate. Moved here, and used them extensively for another 8 years or so. Got to the point I needed something, but cars were waaay too expensive. Remembered bikes. Mum wasn't happy at all, but Dad said he couldn't say no, as he had ridden.
Got my first bike, Dad told me to make good, as he had gone out on a limb :blip: Enjoyed muchly, for just over a year now. Mum still reckons I'm crazy, but I love it. Everything I thought it would be, and more.

My father raced cars, but tried to hide that fact from myself and 2 older sisters, one day I found this old box of car mags, and started to read about my father having set records all over the show, BUSTED! :Police:
My mother and 2 sisters are real petrol heads. My oldest sister rides a 1200 bandit, leaves darkies out the corners, no chicken strips, in fact wears out the side tread before the middle, truly awesome! My other sister likes to pillion, the faster the better, if another bike passes us, she goes crazy bashing me over the helmet to get me going! :gob:
My youngest daughter will be the bike rider out of my 4 kids, she is a natural, just like dad, she rode a bicycle on her 1st ever attempt, unlike old pop she worked out how to stop, I remember my 1st bicycle ride, I too could ride straight away, and yelled out "I can ride, I can ride" pity I did not know how to stop, lucky for me that nice soft power pole stopped me in my tracks, A nice face plant right into it OMMMPPPHHH

Ha ha ha - a nearly perfect description of my 1st bike ride. I was on a friends bike going straight across the road, didn't know how to steer and didn't know how to stop, just kept on peddling straight into the pole. But it felt great to be riding all the same, just needed to sort out the arrivals. I've loved bikes ever since, the freedom and independance. I used to ride my bike everywhere as a kid and as I grew up I couldn't wait to get motorbike. Got a 50 in my last year at high school and haven't been without a motorbike since - I still ride pushbikes too. Just love bikes

None in my whanau were ever really in to bikes.
My Dad drove the odd rally car in his day I think, and is still pretty crash hot in a car nowadays.
I got hooked on speed, especially through corners from sitting in the passenger seat of his cars while he went for it.
Couldn't give a shit about bikes until a few years ago.
It came on kinda slowly.
I think what began the awakening was some dude at Uni who had a Duc 996 with Termi's that shook the earth from 1km away. Couldn't help but notice that.
Then I started reading the stats of bikes. The speed, the acceleration.
Started noticing bikes all over the show then.
One day, in secret, 'cos I knew my olds would absolutely fuckin hate it, I bought myself a CBR250. From the first ride, I was fuckin hooked!!! At first it was the straight line speed, but that wore off real quick. I just fell in love with the sensation of going through a corner. The challenge, and the feeling of glory when myself and machine connected and got it right.
Rode a bigger bike a couple of years after starting, and realised what all of the fuss was really about.
Don't think I'll ever stop riding now, unless I physically or financially can't.

haha. My bro found out first, but I had enough dirt on him to keep him quiet.
I ended up telling my Dad out of guilt. Went something like this:
Dad: "Yeah, old Norm had a drive of my car, reckoned it was the closest thing on 4 wheels to the power to weight ratios of his bikes...he used to race bikes...
Me: (sweet, what a great opportunity to slip it in, he just mentioned bikes)
"Speaking of bikes Dad..."
Dad: "Don't get one"
Me: "Oh, well, but..."
Dad: "Don't get one!"
Me: "I kinda, sorta, did...get one"
Dad: "Ah, fuck..."
So yeah, he took it pretty well really I thought. I also chose to drop it at during a high class event, so he couldn't really raise his voice, haha. :shifty:

My uncles on my mothers side of the family were either racers or restorers, my brothers rode and that's about it. I wanted to be like my brothers when I was a young 'un so getting a bike was always going to happen. Now none of my family ride, just me. I rode horses competitively when I was younger (my mother made me, but I earnt good money as a school kid competing) but always yearned to ride bikes. I remember going to horse shows being bored in the car. Mum would tell me to count horses in the paddocks we passed to pass the time, but I would count motorbikes.
After my accident she thought that was that period of my life over. When I told her I was back riding , she smiled and said she knew I would, as it 'was in my blood'.
So yes, they are.

Hmm, Get the license on december the 16th as I recall, and get the bike on december the 24th.... So that was a bonus!
When I was a little guy, I loved nothing more than puttering around the front yard of Kevies house on the back of his bike. When I was a bit older, every so often I would get a chance to go out on farm bikes etc, and loved it.
Grandad had bikes when he was a young fella, but I never saw any evidence of that, Mum used to go on about it. Dad had borrowed a few guys bikes from work on occasion, and run about on them a bit.
In the early teen years I used to dress in lycra and race on those skinny little pedal things, but one day doing somewhere just over 100 kmph a bee flew up my nose and stung me. Stayed on, but only just, and at that speed calliper brakes don't work that well... Kinda thought, leathers weren't such a bad thing after that.
Then, in a final twist of fates tempting aroma under my nose; one day I was down at vinegar hill, just cruising around with some friends, throwing the girls in the river etc, when a couple of guys cruised down, one on a TL thou, and one on an RF 900. it just looked (and sounded) like THE life, and I had to get one!!
So back to point one, got on a farm bike of a mates, thrashed it to within an inch of its life (when I finally worked out that damn needle clutch) Did the BHS Test, and got my license. Went over the road to Phil Turnbulls and began coveting!
Downhill from there...
I suppose then it is in my blood!!!

My old lady rode on the back of dads bike till she was almost 8 months pregnant with me. I spent the first 8-10 years of my life travelling around in a side car and rode a small bike for a bit on the farm as a kid. Now my family hate the fact that I have my own bike. Go figure?!

Actually, contrary to my original reply: Before he died, my grandfather used to recount to me his tales from the war in Egypt (the old bugger climbed the pyramids before being captured by the Germans). He was an artillery officer and used to ride around on some "dodgy eye-tie" bike with a hand gear change. Had to ride with leg sticking out to avoid serious burns from the manifold / extractors.
I think I take after that cool old coot more than any of my other rellies, so yeah it is in my blood.

Dad had a smallish bike and apparently I could be left on it for hours with the motor running, it on its centre stand and I would rev it, but could not touch the footpegs. Mum allways was horified of my road bikes and was happy to remind me how dangerous they are. Kinda ironic though as she gave me her step through at the age of 8 because she no longer wanted to ride it! Kind of just snowballed from there eh.
