Dads had one in at work (NP) they were going to bash it with wood but thought better of it and rang DOC who advised them it was rather venomous.

DOC wouldnt know a venomous snake if you bashed them in the head with it.
Nothing wrong with snakes, they are seriously misunderstood creatures and would do wonders with this possum problem in NZ. Unfortunatly they would only really be confined to the North Island cause although the SI has better habitat, its too cold.
I kept a large variety of snakes in SA, at one stage more than half were venomous. I have only been to hospital 3 times for venomous snake bites (A few more for non-venomous) and only one of those was a serious bite where I had complications. All were from my own stupidity.
People just fear snakes for the same reason the fear spiders, bats, various insects and large fast moving objects. They are dangerous but only if you let them be. Although I have had an encounter with a Black mamba and saw- scaled viper where they were having a bad day and wanted to bite me cause they could, but Im still sure it was my fault. Only a handful of the thousands of snakes in the world are venomous and only a small percentage of those are deadly. Most of those live in Australia.

Yes. Adders. They add to my problems. And subtractors too. They subtract from my income.

I have to agree with Sniper...coming form a country with lots of snakes, i quite like them. Most of my family were quite keen on the whole collecting snakes under the bed in huge tanks thing. Adders/vipers/cobra's/pythons whatever they could get their hands on.
I never got bitten, only ever had a close call with a scorpion.

Yeah as a kid i used to collect the stingers off the back of the tails. Found a cream scorpion under a railway sleeper and it was grumpy.

I had a pet snake in the US, they are wonderful creatures. If they could come up with a species that only killed possums and cats, I would bring em here myself!
