Just for those following the story - The Pitt bull that savaged my young bloke has been put down.
Owner apparently came to senses and surrendered it to be destroyed and appologised to Matt.
'Bout f'in' time - but score one for common decency.
Jnr's handled himself quite admirably through a tough ordeal too.
Moving on.

Owners ultimately need to be held accountable for their dogs actions, as the lively discussion in the original thread came to the conclusion.
I love dogs and will always have them .. do i need them .. hmm prob not but I love them. I am a responsible owner along with hundreds of others, therefore I know where my dogs are 24/7 no exceptions.
we had also determined in the previous posting minority wreck it for the majority of responsible owners
Without sounding too ars'ey here..............
Every pet owner in the world probably boasts about being responsible with their pet(s), it's only when something like this occurrs and society points the finger, then the owner realise's they are not as responsible as they first thought.

It seems that this topic is all the go in London to , Just listening to the radio and the topic is Gangs of Hoodies with dangerous dogs that are being used as wepons
One interesting thing that has been mentioned is that the dog in peter pan was a staffy , turns out that these dogs were used to look after children a few years back .
Stephen
glad all was sorted in the end .
( wonder if the owners will get another dog??? )

Good news Dave but "the end of the matter?" You can't keep dwelling on whats past but there must be more accountability than simply putting the dog down and apologizing!
Your boy and your family have been through some serous shit through no fault of their own, the dog owners must have more accountability than that.
Does ACC prevent any further retribution being taken against them?
Just doesn't seem enough to me. Concerned rather than stirring. Cheers John.

Yeah - my understanding is he/they still have to face 3 charges to be brought by the council. - one of them sounds serious. (or 2 if you are a cat person).
the cynic in me says that current events may be related to those future proceedings - or getting it to court.

My wife's uncle had a Staffy years back, before the ugly good natured Staffy became ''tough''.He was a headmaster,in fact the big Chief Headmaster for Intermedite Schools - he would of been horrified to think the dog would of been a danger to kids.I remember it lying in front of the fire with the kids like a big fat cat.

So how is he doing now - his injuries all healed up or are there any long term damages, apart from some "camp fire tale" scars?

Yep, sounds ars'ey alright...
From my experience most pets are far better behaved than most kids. Sure there are irresponsible pet owners...just as there are irresponsible parents (no reference meant towards this particular case). No one seems to give a shit about 8-12 year olds running amuck at midnight terrorising the elderly, train commuters, vandalising etc. Go and look at some of the parents: yard overgrown (can't look after plants), dog/cat out of control (can't look after an animal) but they are still allowed to have children when they have proven they aren't capable or willing to look after much simpler organisms. So what happens to the 8-12yr olds? We just take 'em straight back to the fuck-up factory that produced 'em in the first place...home.
No legislation seems targeted at obviously negligent parents yet we are targeting pet owners...who presents the greater risk to society?

Yeah thanks, they are OK.
Sounds like a conclusion for them - the council now has the next say.
Jnr is even OK with the neighbours - his old man is less charitable.

I can't get mad at the dumb animal - it's been selectively bred by humans to be a fuck up - not its fault.
It's the people who turned them into what it is and whoever was the complete fucking idiot who made them lawful in NZ in the first place that I'd like a word with.

yup...
Glad to hear they did the halfway decent thing in the end, and that Jnr is still ok with dogs.
Spoke to a neighbour on monday morning who had a pittyX attack her dog, and another in the street last week. Her dog is okay, damaged and with a few vet bills, but dont think the other smaller dog was as lucky. The main reason her dog survived? It was a Staffy.
As hard as it sounds sometimes I am glad to have a dog that could at least protect itself (to a certain extent anyway) if attacked... pisses me off that she may have to cos of someone elses ignorance.

Unfortunately there isn't much stopping the owner from going out and getting another, with potentially similar consequences.
I've heard of owners being prevented by law from owning further dogs after a history of irresponsibility - perhaps that penalty should be dished out more often.

Yikes,nasty....
I was reminded of this attack last night.....the Pit Bull attacks recently all seem to involve a cat.So last night I walked outside to go around the front of the house to get something out of my Pajero which was on the front lawn. It's very dark outside around this way,but a local white mother cat trotted up to see me - I'm not sure who's she is,even if she's owned, but she has two kittens too.Anyway, she thinks I'm a cool dude and I scooped her up and walked down the drive....then she stiffens and gives a growl.I look over next door, and amongst the cars and junk I see a dog looking through the broken fence....wide forehead and a pink nose.Oh shit, this might not be a good position to be in is a passing thought....I put the cat down and scoot her under the Pajero for protection, then turn and tell the dog to bugger off! She ambled down the drive and I see she's a nursing mother....that was a relief, but it was a hard task for a few microseconds thinking up a contingency plan.Sometimes it doesn't take much to be in the wrong place at the wrong time holding the wrong baby.
