Shipping a bike from Oz?

Hey guys,

one of my mates is shifting out to Auckland from Brisbane and i'm trying to find out whether it's worth his while bringing his '02 ZX9R out here with him.
he paid $14,000 AUD for it brand new last year and has done 3000 kms on it.

Anyone know
a) what it would cost to get one out here and how would you do it?
b) could you find a mint ZX9 here for equivalent money (less depreciation on the sale)?

I think it will cost about $1500 to bring the bike here and around about $400.00 to get it on the road in NZ
Remind your mate he MUST get his auzzie dereg papers and for the sake of pencil pushers his current reg papers or his bike will be worthless here.

well it's gonna cost me $600 to get a bike from japan here so i don't think it would be that much but yip it's about $450 to get it on the road.

Given my recent experience, I would recommend that he email NZ Customs at feedback@customs.govt.nz and give them all the details of the bike, when he bought it, the cost etc, and they will respond usually within 48 hours with a very comprehensive reply.

If I had my time again, I would have bought the 'Storm back from Canberra and wouldn't have had to buy a new bike in NZ where bikes in general are much dearer. It would have cost me something in the region of $1200 to import my '03 Storm, which is far less that the difference in costs, and the immediate loss of buying a new bike.

Just my point of view anyway.

Hey ill stand corrected any day but I thought a bike out of brizzy had to be shipped by land to sydney then seafreighted to NZ

I airfreighted a new bike (the one above) from Oz to Chch and trucked it to Wellington for $750. Add rego and all done.
Don't know what the extra charges are for the Oz end for a bike that's already rego'd... or if there are any.

You might have to pay GST on it aswell. Don't think you will have to pay duty, but definately GST. But it still might be cheaper than buying a new one.

There was a letter in this months two wheels chain mail section (page 22, 05/04 issue - one with the GSXR750 on the cover) where someone mentions http://www.getrouted.com.au/ as an excellent hassle free shipping service between Oz and NZ.

Might be worth a look into. They are a small outfit who are also motorcyclists . Not too sure on whether they just do shipping but worth a look.

Yeah Dave is an ex pat, only slight drama is they operate from Melbourne, but he’s probably pretty amenable to collecting a bike from a trucking outfit, give him a mail & tell him he’ll have to accept payment in goats.

Australia has higher port costs cos those bloody stevedore wop unionists are lazy schmoos...ouch, did I say that out loud? Actually that probably only applies to shipping in/out of Yarra/Port Melbourne. I'm not sure about QLD.

There shouldn't be GST on used goods - it's a POS tax - but don't quote me on that. D'n'T is a GST eggspert, I'll ask him what he knows. And I didn't think we had import tarrifs, so any fees will be shipping/transport, insurance, port surcharges and VIN/rego. Sorry that doesn't help you arrive to an actual figure tho...

Get your mate to look at buying/hiring a 20' or 40' container in Oz, loading all his worldly goods into it, shipping the container here and unloading at his new house. He can talk to the shipping companies directly, or the Triton container rep in Aust. is Royal Wolf. Might help him save overall.
