Just spotted a Honda VFR400 nc30
i love the look of it, the single sided swing arm, the curved spokes on the wheels, the headlights, the lot, it just looks so good, but I was wondering before i start to thinking about commiting cash, are their any common faults with these, anything i need to check, i've read (via google) that they are very reliable. also what effect does the use of cam gears as oposed to a cam chain have?

yep, they are a great looking bike, they go very well for a 400
probably the fastest factory 400 available
go for it!

Great choice. You'll find international websites which cover Honda 400 multis, including how to disable the rev limiter!

8th June 2006, 12:57
I used to own one. They are as good a 400 as you'll ever own!
They're probably the most reliable 400 too.
And they sound better than any other 400. (and look better)

Hurry up and buy it, before I do!

Rectifiers on them are supposed to be a bit dodgy. They can overheat a bit (not much airflow between the Vee). 18 inch rear wheel makes modern rubber a bit hard to get a hold of.

Cam gears will: Not need to be adjusted, make a nice whine as engine speed builds and will not let you do any skimming of the head, unless you can adjust the subsequent change in centres (e.g. thicker gasket).

I've been semi-seriously looking at getting one...there was a nice one just up the coast I was going to have look at, but it was sold before I got there. And now, I've seen the same bike advertised as a wreck... :weep:

They are nice bikes aye, but have a look at the NC 35 mate you won't stop drolling. Few things I am aware of are the 18' rims on a NC 30 and tyres are hard to find compared to a 17' on a NC 35 newer model 94 and upwards.

NC 30 is meant to output 59 hp and NC 35 53 hp. But I really like the newer ones, there was one on TradeMe for 6g, overpriced in my opinion. If you have more info on them chuck it up here

Here a good link :

Nice work Gamgee, watch the battery box filling with water in heavy rain while sitting parked (common Honda problem all over), clutches are a biarch to replace, get a shim adjustment every (I think its) 30,000 Ks, Keep radiator cleaned out and use GOOD oil. Bulletproof lil bike and they corner like nobodys business.

I bought the NC24 (almost identical to the NC30) as a commuter and it seemed to thrive on neglect.
As mentioned in a prior post, the rectifiers went on it twice, but otherwise it performed faultlessly.
I liked the gear driven cam whine and mine did over 100,000 very hard km's with no motor work what so ever.

It handled very well and was good enough for me to win a few official hill climbs on.
It was a weapon over the Rimutakas too, about 4 years back I took it down 2 Weekends in a row, the 1st Weekend I put all the big bore bikes to the sword and then went back the following week and did the same to the smaller bikes that had gathered for a organized small capacity ride (400's and smaller) they put up a much better fight with some national level racers in there, same result in the end though, and all on commuter tyres.

As 400's go, you would be pushed to find a better all round road bike.
This will probably be the only post you will ever see me praise a Honda!:innocent:
Get it, and get it now.

nah, it's still a couple more months till i can get my full, i just think i'm hooked on the vfr as the step up, as i should be able to get one for under $4000 and from what you've all said they are a very good bike, about the battery box, is it possible to just drill a hole in the bottom of it so that the water drains out?

go for it!

I've heard that the ZXR400's are a superior track bike, so fastest 400 may be pushing it.

Apparently the VFR400 is a far better road bike though, so a better choice for most.

kiwifruit
8th June 2006, 16:40
yeah, im no expert on the subject... i still like the vfr much more
there was one at the track day on the 31st that was flying!
sounded really cool too

I agree with mynameis. NC30 is a super bike but i forked out a bit more and got a NC35. Totally have not looked back. And yes the one on trademe for $6K was overpriced i thought.

I did plenty of searching the web on 400's when I got my full and pretty much everything I read praised the NC30 and the NC35. Yes apparently the rectifiers have issues but havent experienced it myself. In my humble opinion a 400 is a great step up from your 250 as they still have plenty of grunt to keep you interested but not that bad for insurance etc.

The sound of the V4 together with the Cams is mint and the single swingarm is superstuff. You wont regret it son.

Sniper
8th June 2006, 17:03
I know if you have a problem with the rectifier, you can just move it. I thin sAsLEX has done something like that.

Drill a hole, glue a hose to it and run it out the bottom. Keeps it tidy and stops water in bits where you don't want water. The only bike I ever wrote off was one of those, hit diesel on a corner.

Recifier? Pfft, an aftermarket part spliced into the wiring fits in nicely and never do you have that problem again. I had the problem once on a 92 CB400f2 where the bike cooked the battery dry because of it. Plenty of advice, but I reckon you should get what you want eh.

:doobey: Far out man, don't like worry about it being a Honda dude. The common theme over the years from people dissing the big H is that they are so good that they don't have any character (ie bits don't fall off).

I can't talk about this bike in particular, but have had nothing but good experiences personally and good reports from mates with Hondas.

Having said that, Go Kawasaki!

Hondas are a sign of questionable sexuality, not to mention the softest cock'd bikes in the yard. If you can't ride a honda you ARE A MUPPET.

The brand subject to ridicule as 'wepresenting wice' (especially in the car world) is not ridiculed for no reason.

If you get a honda, YOU *ARE* a homo.

And please ignore that closet honda fan signature gremlin has.. he.. uhh.. made it up? Yeah.

Go ride everything else, don't be a sheep, or an arse rider, OR a squidulous cockfag honda rider. Get a real mans' bike.

it's exactly as the man said, hondas have a bad rep cause of their cages, there are basically two demographics that drive them, boy ricers, and 90 year olds, also the vt250's are crap

I'm kidding you lot.. sheesh.

I was a honda hassler on my old username.. tristank. Nuff said. I think they are fine bikes and I'm a closet honda fan (05rr nice.. shit nice..) but the ones I have ridden felt a little soft, I prefer an edgy bike but I test everything... liked the honda hornet alot though as a commuter.

I wanna try the new blades and see what they are like.
