View Full Version : 32nd cold kiwi rally

10th June 2006, 11:25
On the !st Weekend of September the Ruapehu Motorcycle Club will host the 32nd annual COLD KIWI RALLY near Waiouru.
KIWIBIKER.CO.NZ will be there in force. As a Virtual Motorcycle club the Cold Kiwi offers a rare chance for the KIWIBIKER folks to get together and meet each other from other areas in the flesh and of course riding gear.
The RUAPEHU club are putting a strong focus on the TUG-OF-WAR this year so it would be a great chance for all the KIWIBIKER folk to put up a top team and kick everyone elses arses.
The Ruapehu club have made available the tug of war rope so the KIWIBIKER teams can challenge each other amongst themselves to see whose the best and then either select that team to take on the rest of the feild in the official event; or to select a team from the pickings to put forward.
In addition to this for the 32nd COLD KIWI The Ruapehu MCC have offered a deal BUY TEN TICKETS AND RECEIVE ANOTHER ONE FREE. Local KIWIBIKER groups will need to put forward somebody to arrange the collection and they will either take the free ticket themselves or put the:scooter: :cold: names in a hat and draw a number who'll get their money back.
Additionally local groups who want to ride to the rally in a group will sort out the best time and meeting place to leave from. Watch this web site for details on both.

Will you guys be camped in the same place as usual? Is Pete taking any of the kids this year?
Viv & I will probably be there on the mighty KLR250's turning up on Sat, this year will be our 20th Kiwi. Will be leaving from Shell Mana early Sat as we usually do some back roads to get there - keep off Highway one as much as possible

I'm planning to rock on down Friday night. On Saturday I'll be going for a wee ride down Field's track or thereabouts to Wanganui for breakfast (or lunch depending on the amount of Stone's consumed the night before...), then back up the Whanganui River Rd. Zukin will probably come along on his XR250 so we'll be cruising at n00b speed.
Anybody interested shoot me a PM with yer ph# & on Fri night we'll decide on a departure time from the gate & send a txt.
Cheers

Put in a order for a KB beanie with my username on it, if im lucky it`ll arrive in time, other wise ill be the fool wearing red white and black summer race leathers, staggering around holding a beer, drooling over the bikes and grinning like a hyena on laughing gas.

So far we have a CB750, a Marauder 800 and an XT225 - all we need is a sprot bike and an FA50 and we have the "set".
Anyone in the Hamilton region planning on taking a stroll down there earlyish on Friday and wants some riding buddies: let me know and I'll confirm departure time.
Dunno about my travelling companions but I aim to stop for a few scenic pics on the way down (via Te Kuiti, Taumarunui, National Park, I think) if the weather's fine.

Once there i will be meeting with many of my mates, look for my flashly tarted up gb400, a red gn, a coupleof gs1200ss', a gs500e, a gsx750f... the list goes on.

Well I'm all ready to go. Having to wear a pack this year as I will be taking my RG500. Much easier last year with my GSX1100E and a pack rack except I carried sooo much stuff the front wheel was off the ground and half of it neally fell off on the way home. Funny how everything pack nicley when you a at home, it never goes home the same way.
I carried a gazebo, chair, pillow, airbed and a rather large tent and beer some of the way. Hate DB. Never again.
Still have a pillow and airbed... others are carring the tent, gazebo, chairs etc and a stereo.... pack is 15kg so I will be sick of that when I arrive.
This is my 7th cold kiwi and the first year I have taken the same bike twice.
RD350LC x 2, GSXR750, 900SL, RG500 and GSX1100E and RG again. :scooter:

Gods! Is your GSX1100 capable of time-travel as well?
I'm looking at having to remove the small quilt I was planning to use as a "mattress" as it and my sleeping bag have filled my pack and I need to make room for first aid kit and spare clothes. One smallish pack and a tent is all I can carry on the XT and still be able to ride the damned thing.

I Have to agree there. That guy was a clown! He lowsided it 3 or 4 times then gave it the berries and mannaged to cartwheel it. First time I ever saw a large cruiser fly!:gob:
Another highlight for me was the picnic table racing around  and the motorized bar stool!
At the burnout comp. there was one fuckwit who kept getting in the way & putting his hands where he shouldnt. Old Duncun told him 4 times to fuck off but he went back again & got pushed off the burnout hill. I was waiting for someone to punch his lights out. The same fuckwit was camped just down the hill from me & he tried to get his bike out but dropped it. Picked it up then dropped it on his tent, picked it up & dropped it on the other side etc. etc. this went on for about an hour. He would lay down with his bike and rest a little while then start trying to pick it up again.
I had a great weekend! Was good to meet Phantom, Wolf, sels1, Lias, Bonez and good to see Crazy Steve again.

Had a great trip up, caught up with a few KBers and then as hinted at by Sels ruined it with a seconds inattention when coming down the mountain and dropping the poor old GB. Buggered up my back and snapped off the mirror, clutch lever and foot peg. Bonez once again came to the rescue with a spare clutch lever he just happened to have with him, straightened the gear lever and did a temporary repair to the foot peg with a piece of wire, a stick and some duct tape. :done: Had a very uncomfortable ride home on Sunday and spent Monday in hospital after passing out in the morning. Sent home with a bag of pain killers and a doctors certificate for a week off work. Feeling very second hand and sorry for myself:whocares: and Sarah ( Ms Phantom ) would give me a good kicking if I wasn't sore enough already. Thanks very much to Sels1 and Bonez for babysitting me all the way home and making sure I didn't forget which way was up

Cheers, correction made. I tried memorising everyone's bikes on the day but forgot what yours was aside from a Honda CB so I "cheated" and looked at your profile. If you'd listed the 750 under "other bikes" I'd've been horribly confused. :D

Just been on the phone to a friend who is the Ohakune Publican, she said the woman killed on the trike was a well known local and funeral was today. From what she understood they had problems with the trike handlebars at rally fixed them and leaving rally at about 2ish in morning lost control on way to Ohakune on the sharp bend where the railway line crosses . Her family were travelling behind in the car. Sounds a bit tragic really

With great anticipation I took the disposable camera - containing the only photos I had been able to take of the Cold Kiwi - to the One Hour place and got it processed.
I turned up at lunch time, 2 hours later and the chick hands me the pouch of photos and says "$28-something" so I paid and then opened the pouch to see most of the first picture is Cyan. The other chick bustles up and asked where I had kept the camera because it was heat damage that had caused the discolouration but some of the pics were OK.
I later found a proof-sheet of all of the pics amongst them which meant they had known before they printed them that most of the pics were discoloured and hadn't even phoned to alert me to that fact and ask if I still wanted the photos printed - pricks!
It's not their fault the pics were damaged but they could have at least rung and asked before printing the damaged pics and charging me for them.
So anyway, the photos are all fucked - anything remotely bright (like the sky or a certain snow-capped mountain) in them, is over exposed and coloured cyan. You can scarcely make out the cyan mountain against the cyan sky in the best of them - the rest of the shots with the mountain in the background just show a nearly uniform cyan sky.
I scanned them and tried to adjust the colour but to no avail. The nearest I could do to salvage one shot was to completely crop out the sky and the no longer visible Mount Ruapehu, leaving only my tent and my bike.
I'm so pissed off. The only shots I've got of our journey down (Roj and Lias didn't take any of the trip) and of my bike on Ruapehu (like Sels1's shot of his Tiger) are completely fucking worthless.
On the positive side: the photo place got their money, that's all that really matters, right?

Justification for purchasing a cheap digicam possibly ah?

Justification for purchasing a cheap digicam possibly ah?
We have a digicam that I would have taken had the cubs not hidden the bloody thing (strayjuliet eventually found it later that weekend). The only thing we could find was that camera we'd purchased ages before and had only a few shots left on it.
Was so wild about the service I got that I had to wait til I calmed down then I phoned the photo place, spoke with the manager and said I felt it was poor customer service not to ring and ask before printing 22 damaged photos. He said he agreed and would refund at least part of my money - not that that helps with my pics but I feel less like I've been ripped off.
I'm especially ticked that the pic of the bike on Ruapehu's rocky slope is buggered - I had hoped to use that to replace the pic on my home page (a bit more scenic and appropriate to the XT than the one taken outside a local park.)
The weather was perfect, we had great scenery and I got some great shots in spectacular places, thanks to Sels1's guidance, and all I have is Sels1's group pic and a heavily cropped pic of my bike and tent that should have the scenic beauty of Mount Ruapehu in it.
