Help moving to Wellington

Sorry this is a bit off topic, but I'm in the final stages of getting a job in Wellington. Hoepfully this will result in my having a contract some time next week to start the week after but the job doesn't exist until I get that contract. It's looking good though.

I've never lived in Wellington so I'd really appreciate any advice on where to stay, how to find accomodation, what areas to go for or avoid. I'm looking for a room or cheap self contianiend accomodation.

The job will be in the city centre for an intial three months.

There are lots of good little aprtments in the CBD and lots of suburbs just outsitde the CBD like Newtown, Te Aro, Mt Cook, Kilbirnie, Island Bay.

And the great thing is that if you ride into topwn it's a free parking for motorbikes! :2thumbsup

I was in Wellington last weekend and the weather was shit. But there are compensations (compact city centre, less traffic, great urban environment, culture etc.) I lived for many years on the slopes of Mt Victoria before it became trendy. Great view of the city, easy walk/bus/ride into town and above all, most of the houses face west for the sun and are sheltered by the hill from the vicious, bitterly cold, incessant, depressing southerly...

The weather crap about Wellington is as old and tired as the "Jafa" thing. I grew up in Auckland and moved to Wellington not long after I got married. Both places have their pluses and minuses, like anywhere. I would say that on average you get longer periods of good and bad weather in the Wellington region than in Auckland. I certainly didn't complain about last Summer as much as everyone else did, because I got heaps of good riding in excellent conditions.

Don't let Mike wind you up (I am sure that he's just fishing for a response anyway!). I have a view of the entire harbour and the Hutt valley from my house and I wouldn't find anything like it anywhere in the world for what I paid for it.

I grew up in Auckland and moved to Wellington not long after I got married.

With me it was the exact opposite. I actually love the feel of Wellington and compared to Auckland it has a better-defined sense of place with its encircling hills, compact CBD, and superb waterfront. Auckland's size and haphazard sprawl encourage alienation but Wellington has a coziness about it which is not stifling or limiting but produces a good feeling of identity.
Now if only it was a few degrees closer to the equator it would be perfect.

Go spend some time in Northern Europe. Wellington never gets any colder than shirtsleeves weather for them, and Summer would melt them.

Each to his own, any place with more than 200 people in it is congested in my opinion!!, We lived in wgton for a couple of years, didn't like it much, came back here to Gisborne and then moved out into the wops, it's nice in the country, and if you need to ride anywhere you have a nice long twisty road to get there! LOL, in these enlightened days of email, and web chat, it really barely matters where you live so long as you choose to be there. and of course no place is nice to live if your neighbours are a#$%holes!
