I saw it used a lot when I was working overseas with Yanks and now I see it popping up down-under a lot and commonly used on this board.. Maybe someone like Hitcher can help but I can't help but thinking that it it is another term that we have inherited from the North Western Hemisphere.?

Have used that word a few times, and I guess it's just a piece of slang used when denoting an off-hand, lighthearted manner of speaking. It is sometimes difficult to inflect into the written word the tone of voice intended, so resorting to these "informal" expressions is one way of doing so. Similar intentions are often expressed by adopting other forms of colloquialisms such as txt spelling, phonetics and such like.:yes:

One thing that really gets me splittering into my Speight's Gold Medal Ale is the way Yanks drop the H of selected words.

For instance 'uman instead of Human, or 'erbal instead of Herbal.

Are they trying to be some sort of New World Cockney or something - and its an ARSEHOLE as well, not an Asshole.

I find "haddock" equally useful for that purpose, and free of American overtones. There is nothing American about haddock.

Perhaps a lot of Americans, Canadians, Aussies and Kiwis, especialy with European backgrounds are semi rootless in their own countries resulting in attempts at modifying the language to form some sort of local Identity.
