Hi all,
Im bought a zxr250 on the cheap because it was in an 'unrunning' condition.
I got it home and did the usual, new oil, new filters, new petrol, drian the carbi bowls, new plugs....
i can clutch start it and once it is warm i can stop and start via the start switch, but when it is cold it will not start via the start switch... any ideas??
my next thought was to replace the leads, then if no go check the valve clearances and do a compression test..?? am i on the right path?? has this happened to anyone before???
thanks in advance

So, when you try to start it from cold, does the starter turn over? If not, it might be you battery, otherwise, if the battery is not the problem, then yeah, I'd look at the valve clearances and the compression. The are better experts around than me though.

Make sure your battery is charged before you do anything else. My ZXR would have huge problems starting with a ok sounding, but close to flat battery.
The other thing to consider is that some zxrs seem to have little 'tricks' to starting them, like some will only start full choke no throttle (mine when I first got it), no choke some throttle (a mates), half choke, just a little throttle at first (mine after some engine work), etc, etc. (I'm sure you'll hear every variation out there if you ask)

is it making a vvvrrrrrrr noice when ya press the start button.....i think it means the solanoid (cant spell) isnt engaging.....give the starter a tap with a hammer as ya push the starter and see what happens

I took the battery out of my aprilia rsv to test...
the battery doesnt seem to be the problem, the starter motor is turning the motor over at a decent rate...
i have 12.5v on the battery
and 11.9v when turning the bike over..
that should be enough voltage shouldnt it...???

That's pretty low voltage, charge it overnight, then try it again.

My zxr did the same thing.
Runs alot better with a new battery 12.6. only drops down to 12.1v under starter.
I found that mine had a burned out regulator though it was still getting some charge but not enought to get it firing on a cold start.
as "sefer" stated most zxr's have a starting trick, mine's full choke (check that the choke cable isn't striched and is engaging the choke) no throttle untill it start reving to about 6000.
also I have fuel issues. wouldn't run on NZ 96, and not even close on 91. only BP 98 and 100 race fuel. good luck once they go they are a shit load of fun
Good luck
