View Full Version : Change of ownership...I mean odometer...

Have you ever done a change of ownership - car or bike - and had a wee look at the info they send you on that nice LTNZ piece of paper and discovered that the recent odometer readings are lower than the previous ones?

Well, I have.

So I have a nice little piece of paper that says blah-de-blah about different owners, then for a few owners it has "Odo reading at last check". And the most recent one is about 2000ks less than the one before it.

Now I'm not trying to throw suspicion onto anyone at all, I'm sure it's just a mistake of some sort. I guess the question is - how does someone make such a mistake?

Do they misread the odometer?
Has it been typed in incorrectly at the Post Office?
Is it just a random string of numbers that look pretty together?
How does one put an Odo reading onto the database anyway? Does the post office request it? (No, it can't be that, because there's only a reading for a few of the owners...Hmm...)

Ok, I don't actually expect anyone to know the answer. I just thought it was a little bit weird.

Possibly a typo. When you sell a vehicle, (I did mine online, through the Transaction Centre) they ask you for the odo reading. This is what would be printed on the cert. So that's one way of that happening...

Could still be real problem tho :sherlock:

Ive been in to do this before and at the time had no idea of what the correct odo reading was, so just made one up. Could perhaps been what has happened with yours?

They now use the entrys of WoF inspections on the records,so some,ah....issues are arising. We are not data entry experts,we twirl spanners, and have now been forced into punching keyboards...it's not really what we signed up for all those years ago.So we read them wrong, enter them wrong, dislexic, keyboard errors etc, plenty of ways to get it wrong.Ever since the system was intoduced we get warning flags - incorrect VIN number, mileage too high or low...double check your entry and it's correct,so it's the database that has the incorrect information...then we just overide the data...never been a problem. But now they are using the data we enter....and it has become an issue.

It came to my notice earlier this year when I did a WoF on a diesel Bluebird - the customer had then sold the car...and the new owner was being charged for 50,000km RUC's!!! I had made a mistake on one number, either read my bad writting wrong,or hit a wrong key...no big deal eh? Oh what a drama....they wouldn't accept any explanation,so I did another WoF for the guy,a couple of mths later, entering the correct details, but they still wouldn't let him off the RUC's.I had to write a letter of explanation along with a photocopy of the original check sheet. What a lot of crap.

Another thing is these bloody digital odo's,some have a couple of trip metres and some people have no idea what they are or how to use them....nor do I.So we get trip metre readings in the tens of thousands, that's the reading on the dash, that's the number I copy down....so now I have to notice if it's a trip reading....then try and figure out how to find the real odo reading.Oh the drama!

While on this point, can anyone tell me how my Gixxif600 Sukie 1998 reads mileage please. I have heard its something to do with the engine cam?? I know it sounds like a silly question but I dont have a workshop manual, yet, and all my other bikes were the old cable type, which cheats could disconnect to keep mileage down. Can the modern ones be tampered with?

I thought but Im not sure that when they enter your odo reading when you get your wof done that the system won't let them enter one less then the previous reading.

it could happen if they changed the odometer as someone suggested. (due to broken odometer, etc...)

Bandits have a sensor on the countershaft cover for the speedo

i'll tell you what the problem is... the speedo (either the cable or the actual clock, im pretty sure its the clock) fucked out when i owned that bike, was at about 47k if i remember correctly. Also gave the guy one or two other dash setups so it could be one of them. I couldnt source a cheap replacement cable, let alone a new dash and as i knew what gear/rev combos gave what speeds i didnt bother with it as it was 5mths til next wof...

just out of interest what are the readings? and how is it running otherwise? Any smoke or power problems?

You'll have to ask Aff... I only got my licence yesterday and have been studying for exams so haven't had a chance to get on it. I'll go check the odo though and tell you what it says.

Thanks crashe :D

I'v just checked the odo...it's 51914, which is more than the last two. I guess that doesn't mean much, by my guess is on the side of the typo...though perhaps with some errors. I guess I'd better keep an eye on it though. Thanks all.
