where does your water come from?
town supply , bore , river.
our did the same thing yesterday after all ther bad weather .
we get oue water from the river and even though we have filter on house particles still got through it and blocked the ballcock valve which lets water into the cylinder and bathroom.
i got in roof and cleaned the valve and it sweet as now.
it had an airlock and to clear it my mate a plumber said just turn taps and off and it cleared after awhile.
also our bathroom has a safety feature which im sure most will that if there's no cold water in pipes we cant get hot water so as to stop scolding i guess.
and an airlock will cause this.
do you have hot water in your kitchen?
if there is but not in bathroom that will be probably be the cause.
if you cant get any hot water anywhere it may pay to turn hot water cylinder off depending on how old it is to prevent the element burning out.
the older ones have the element real low and when there no water in them the element is out of the water and is prone to burn out.
newer ones the water outlet is higher than the element as to always keep the element under water to help prevent burnout.

Is the tap to the hwc turned on? Is there cold water coming from the cold taps?
Try turning the outside (hose) tap on and letting it run for awhile. Also try the same with a cold tap from inside the house. Just running the taps can release an air lock. Have a look around the tank and make sure there are no damp patches.
::edit:: Happy birthdayday!!!

Possibly the water in the pipe leading into the hot water cylinder has frozen. If water cannot get in, it won't come out either. It came right when then blockage melted.
You would have to look at your cylinder but you could try lagging the cold water pipe into it. Used to be hessian but you can buy lengths of split foam tube these days that you cable tie on..
Have a look at the pipe route into the cylinder and inspect it for damage..
Just a thought...

IMHO, Id do it sooner than later. Frozen pipes are a bummer but split ones are a nightmare. While you are at it, make sure you know where the shut off taps are .... just in case...
Daughters are a menace in the bathroom but these days teenage boys seem worse. Jeeze, the only time i went to the bathroom was to have a grot, a shower or scrub / squeeze the worst of me zits off... Fingernails with perm grease under them from crappy old bikes and cars and dirt from being outside...
