The Cook Strait power cable is so fragile that a company is contracted by Transpower to sit out there in a boat to monitor the exclusion zone. Those buggers are out there all year 'round. They come into Welly weekly for supplies/shift changes and hide behind Karori during bad southerlies. The fine for fishing, be it recreational or commercial, is quite large.
You'd think that they would have put two cables down, one for a spare?

There are about six of them but most of them are stuffed, unless there has been a lot of work done in the last five years. :blip:

I understood all the roading money for the country was actually being diverted to Dorkland anyway, so I think that our roading would be better off without you lot.

Three cables were laid across the Cook Strait when the HVDC link was first established. I can't remember the exacy year, but I beleive it was the early 1960's. They were expected to last 30 years. By 1992 when the new Soilid State pole 2 was established, one of the original cables was u/s and one was losing nitrogen at a rapid rate.
Three new cables were laid in 1991. Again with an expected life expectancy of 30 years. As far as I'm aware, the present state is 2 good cables, 2 damaged cables and 2 u/s. 2 cables are required for full transfer.

Well there are similar fines for fishing within the network corridor in Auckland.
Telecom runs a line out from Takapuna which if cut would cost about $750,000 to replace (loss of earnings etc...)

You can fuck the line by just snagging it with a fishing hook apparently... they're really rather fragile.
