Wow. just had about 5 or so lightening strikes outside work in the last few minutes - i think i'll leave the bike in the work garage for the weekend (this way i can drink too! :yes:)
so..... is it possible for a biker to be hit by lightning?

Not to sure about being hit by lightning. It sure would look spectacular though.
If you were moving you'd presumably be insulated by your tyres. Stepping off might be interesting.

Perhaps a lightning strike would put the power back into the Magic - it worked for Marty McFly when his flux capacitor was short of grunt.

Not Suzooks - too fast.

There was a good article on Top Gear where the hamster sat in a small car (VW?) at Siemens high voltage test facility. They zapped the car with simulated lightning and he and the car were ok.
From memory the lighting encased the shell of the car but didn't enter it.
Not sure the same principle would apply to a bike though. However, lightning hits tall objects so around town you should be sweet - power poles, buildings, daleks etc etc.
Just don't go playing polo on your motorcycle along the local flat country plains....

Blaaaaaaaaarg!
I went out to get some fish and chips, as soon as I hit Lambton Quay, BAM! The Heavens opened. Quietly regretting my decision to wear nothing over my jeans, I trundled my way to Molesworth St where I consoled myself with an excellent $5 meal deal.

Tie a an old chopper flag to some ones bike, that might attract the lightning.

An Overseas magazine had an article on lightening strikes (back in the 80s) and they had a few reports of it happening :yes: one in particular is still pretty vivid in the memory;
A couple of guys (2 up) were on tour somewhere and the rider got struck by lightening on the shoulder & knocked him out cold, the bloke riding pillion had to reach over the KO'd rider and bring the bike to a stop. The rider received burns to his shoulder & left foot where the lightening bolt exited his body.

Tried having 10W resistors in the handlebars themselves (quite legit method) and bars got to 200deg (inside). Grips were 'warm'.
Nichrome wire running at about 6watts each side. Itll be fine reckon. More worried about insulation tape.

A chap where I work did a asimilar thing and covered the wires on his grips with cricket bat handle rubber (over electrical tape I think). Looks ok from a distance and apparently isn't too uncomfortable.
All those colours to choose as well.

Cricket bat covers. Nice. Using mtb innertube rubber currently, may slip a bit...nice and thin though.
