Well done LandTransportSafetyAuthority. Now justify the rest of your annual budget & I'm a fan.

This is bullshit. If you stop in time, it kills the kid anyway just to show what might have happened had you been going at 60 instead of 50kmh. To make this more realistic they should use a RAV4 in reverse, rather than a toddler on a trike.

19th June 2006, 20:29
Where on earth do they get those numbers from?

At 160kph it says that it'll take 143.4M to stop. It takes me just under 120M to go from 215kph to about 60kph. and i'm hardly 'the last of the late brakers'. I could probably come to a complete stop in 143.3M.

I think the fun aspect is an unexpected by-product. Definitely thought provoking, we're discussing it after all so it's doing it's job.

What a crock of shit. More propoganda bullshit from LTSA.

While they're at it, why don't CYPS create a game where a maori father gets to see how hard he can punch and kick his son until he's unconscious. Or better yet, the Union game where you get as many doctors as you can to leave work and watch all the people die. Or, or, or, the Council game where you purposely create havoc on the roads and laugh as the traffic comes to a complete stop.

Ixion
19th June 2006, 21:46
That site is a total and utter fake.

I selected 100kph. Hit the "brake" as soon as the car started moving. It continued on for 21 section frontages. That's over 1200 ft , 400 metres, 4 times their claimed stopping distance at that speed. And then , of course, hit the child.

It's totally rigged and typically, discredits anyting they may say.

Moreover, it is also false insofar as the "distance ahead" they show is far less than the 12 second rule (about 3 seconds) .

I claim "bullshit"

Moreover, whats with the 1.5 second reaction time. I may be old but my reflexes aren't that slow. Maybe 0.3 seconds. Also, after you have braked the "vehicle" does not slow down.

What the hell do they think drivers are on??

"At 50kph it takes 41m to stop" WTF!!!!!! :gob:

I did the bronz ride right course, and at 70kph, I was pulling up my bike in about 2.5 car lengths, so approx 15m. And my bike is heavy, at 200kg dry. Give me a nice new sprotty, I should be able to pull it up faster.

50 kph... sheesh, less than 12m if I remember correctly...

hmmm, although, if I try to suck up to LTNZ, the concrete surface was probably grippy... :doobey:

Quite. Where's the game of "back the SUV out of the drive, on a cellphone, screaming at the kids and act surprised when you smear a motorcyclist across the back left quarter".

Or how about Lane Changer! Change lanes in traffic without first looking - half points for whacking Jim2's foot.

Or Effluent! Drive round the Wairarapa smearing sheep shit on the roads - fun for all the family!

Oh the fun! Anyone good with flash?

Dave

I'm *almost* sure that I remember the mantra being "30 foot at 30mph". And that with 7 inch sls drum brakes lined with war surplus trousers.

*might* have been 30 yards, but even that is much less than their figure.

But, if they're assuming a 1.5 second reation time, that could be right. Maybe the 1.5 seconds includes time to hang up the cell phone.

What?

Dam brakes were faulty:nono: That cage should not have passed a WOF. Wouldn't let me brake earlier.

So I thought, fu*k'em and didn't brake at all next time. Hey if I was going ta kill the kid anyway I might as well do it properly.

PS: before anyone get upset, I would not do that in real life. It's just an animation, OK:msn-wink:

Bloody propaganda, they don't realise it has the opposite affect. Even though it might be done with the best intentions people realise it's biased and false, so people choose to ignore it and everything else that gets said about the topic. Why did so many people ignore the message that P fucks you up? Because before P they said the same about ecstacy and it didn't (well, not as much).

I can stop in less than 41m from 50kph. Landtransport tell me I can't (and prove it to me by showing me hit a kid on a bicycle). They lie and I'm right so I'm not listening anymore.....

I think a testing session in a car park is required.....

I am wondering if this is some ridiculous average that factored in thoses talking on their cell phones and doing make up, or maybe is was the one that needed he extra 20 meters to identify that it was a kid and maybe I should Stop!

haha. not everybody drives a car without brakes these days.

mercedes make cars that will stop from 100kph in 30 metres.

I think the old way of calculating stopping distances (holden kingswood with a drunk westy behind the wheel) are a little outdated.

I think the old way of calculating stopping distances (holden kingswood with a drunk westy behind the wheel) are a little outdated.

Interesting you mention a Holden Kingswood. A quick google of "average stopping distance from 50 km/hr" provides this site:

http://www.nrma.com.au/pub/nrma/motor/car-research/stop_distance.shtml

NRMA is Aussies eqivalent of the AA.

Look at the stopping distances they use. Especially the 1979 Kingswood. Which is not quite as bad as the 1984 Landcruiser, which stops, in the wet, in HALF the distance quoted by LTNZ.

22nd June 2006, 14:20
Continuing on, Here's Land Transport South Africa's reasoning for lowering the speed limit to 50km/hr in urban areas:

http://www.transport.sa.gov.au/safety/road/initiatives/50kmh_suburban/the_facts.asp

Check out their quoted stopping distances.

I reckon LTNZ have been well and truly caught in a lie here.Maybe it's us Kiwi Drivers that suck at stopping not the "cages" we drive:nya:What with trying ta Txt, eat my Mac'ers, and changing the CD on the CD player, I could see my stopping distance being more than Aussies and South Africians, cause we know they don't muilti-task (male Kiwis just pretend we can't:msn-wink: ).
