Road Registering a trials bike?

Is it possible/has anyone done it? Tempted to back into trials after a 10 year gap (this (http://www.trademe.co.nz/Trade-Me-Motors/Motorbikes/Motorbikes/Dirt-bikes/auction-59966055.htm) looks nice!) back in the UK I had my Beta road registered so I could go for a quick blast up the hills without taking the trailer - but never seen one road registered in NZ? Would you need all the indicator/headlight gubbins etc? (I just needed a numberplate/horn in the UK).

I'm not sure that modern trials bikes can be registered,although they all seem to come with a headlamp.Back in the '70's and '80's trials bikes were road legal,and some exemtions did and still do exist for certain models.The TY's,the KT,RL,247,248 and Sherpa T don't need indicators still.A modern trials bike would be less suitable on the road than those.

Way hey, I haven't heard anybody mention an RL for bloody years! My first bike, and I thought it was a thing of absolute beauty at the time, mismatched guards, dented tank, bashed in exhaust an' all.
I can't imagine riding any distance on one of the new ones though. Then again you could have some fun going OVER the cars at the lights rather than just splitting the lanes. I'd pay money to see the looks on the drivers faces!

Many of the new euro trials bikes that come in seem to have all the road gear on them, indicators etc, must be a requirement over there or summat. Check with the dealers, they probably take it all off & throw it in a box.

It's hard enough not to engage in urban lunacy on any dirtbike, I just wouldn't be able to resist on a trials bike: "but officer it's not as if there was anyone on the park bench when I rode over it..."

Back in the very early days trials bikes were road bikes,and there were road transport sections...kinda like rally cars,so they needed to be road legal.I guess in the UK they still stick to the road legal idea.It was the same here with enduro bikes - they all had to be road legal,that's why there were WoF exemptions for the XR and the like too.Back in the early '90's they changed it so you could use an MX bike if you like...and there is no need to keep the race bike WoFed and regoed.

Back in the early 80's when I was still at school
I road my Honda TL125 on the road.
they came with indicators new ...but mine didnt so I never used any

It would cost me $3.00 to fill it up and I rode it to thames once and only used half a tank!

Short Answer is "Maybe". Long answer is: IF it has been registered before, IF the frame # is in LTNZ database, IF you have full ownership history, IF you have original importation docs from origin and finally IF you can be bothered bashing your head against the LTNZ's wall, the "MAYBE" it is possible. Having done this a few times for my customers, I recommend against it- LTNZ are so anal it is virtually impossible to do, unless its a mini chopper, then they dont seem to care !!!!

I noticed on Yamaha Europe's website a 250cc bike called the Tricker, which looked like a sudo trials bike for the road. Don't know if it was any good. And certain we never got it here.

Motorad had a 05 Gas Gas trials bike in the shop the other day. It had all the road legal gear on it but no seat, as do all modern trials bikes - I don't see why it couldn't be registered - also don't forget the Pampera.

Might have a pop down to Motorad at the weekend then - Wellington Motorcycles had one of those Yam Tricker's in a while ago I think, would have loved a test ride! (stoppies down Lambton Quay anyone?!)
