View Full Version : Bourbon or Beer - which is best?
Flatcap

I got in an argument at work today over which is the better refreshment - Bourbon (aka Bourbon and Cola aka Woodstock) or beer.
Being in the 'refreshment' industry my vote was of course for the extensive and deliciously refreshing range of beer available to us all. However I faced the assertion that all bikers drank was Bourbon and Cola.
Is this true? are you all slaves to this Southern Floozie?

This thread is just sad. On so many levels. I could make a sweeping generalisation about folk who drink RTDs or use ginger ale as a mixer in anything other than Stones Green Ginger Wine. But that could be unkind and cause them to unnecessarily ruffle their hoodies.

Burbon... but that my have something to do with the fact that I hate beer... (long story)
I don't like the canned stuff though... I mix my own burbon or drink it on ice. I prefer half burbon half coke mix with coke zero (normal coke is too sweet) I don't know why but I find the mixes with less burbon and more coke very difficult to drink.

As I recall, Hitcher, you are an aficianado of Single Malt Whisky - good choice
...but you cannot condemn those of a less mature palate for enjoying their poison.....
Oh buggerit - I agree - you may as well drink turpentine if you are going to drink an RTD

Spirits straight unless rum and coke.

Stay away from anything bearing the woodstock logo, tastes like they premix some vomit in to make things interesting.

Bourbon and coke, single malt whisky (islay is best), then straight bourbon.
Don't like any beer at all, though I did once come first equal in a beer tasting contest against beer-oholics. Couldn't drink a whole glass though. yuck.

At a rally I start with a few beers, then onto the bourbon (JB) & coke (not premixed ) the mix gets to around 50/50 as the evening gets on.
A refreshing summer drink I like is vodka and coke.
Favourite beer - Monteiths Original.

Don't mind Bourbon and coke - so long as they are in separate glasses.
Prefer Scotch (preferably mixed with more scotch).
A good dark rum is not bad either.
Green Ginger wine and Port mixed is good anti freeze on cold nights.
All things in moderation of course.

On a hot stinking day.................nothing like a beer. Black if possible but the hotter is is the less important the beer quality. Still reckon the Loaded Hog dark is as good as any where. My pick of English beer is Spitfire. It's a bitter, but bloody near unobtainable now. Bourbon..........still prefer JD........usualy with coke..............but I once tried it with cloves. If you want to try something a bit different bourbon and cloves............not the kind that you put in apple pies. Nothing like a good stiff gin Indian tonic and like iced. Now why is gin stiff?
Single malts.........some one mentioned Islay.............nice drop..............have you tried Laphroaig??
Incedently malt lovers, if your are traveling overseas get a bottle of Mcallan's

Another malt drinker! Good lad. I have yet to meet a malt I didn't like. Yes, I have my preferences, but these are largely driven by things like my mood, time of day, the weather outside, months with an R in, days with a Y in, that sort of thing. It is unfair to compare malts from different regions, as those with the strongest "personality" often "win" such encounters. There are some bloody awesome Speyside and Lowland malts that have to be judged and appreciated on their merits, not in comparison with some hairy-chested islander.

Bourbon of choice is Wild Turkey(aged 8 years), but if it contains alcohol ill give it a go.

Over 95% of beer drinkers can't distinguish one beer from another, despite their often vociferous preference for a particular brand.
I do a work social club beer tasting event on a semi-regular basis, usually involving blind-drinking about 10-12 different beers: Heineken, Stella, Waikato (or Lion Red), Speights, Export, Macs Gold, Black Mac, Speights Old Dark, Copperhop and Radler, and maybe a couple of others to cater for regional preferences.
I know, you'll all be going "I could pick nearly all of those, no worries!"
Have I got news for you. Based on repeatable empirical evidence, the best of you will struggle to get half right. Less than half of you will struggle to identify Radler or even pick the dark beers from the others. The best score I have ever seen was a 90% success rate -- from a pommie temp secretary who had been in New Zealand for less than two weeks, and I think that's what's known as Dumb Luck.
