same car two tanks  1.7lt civic
two completely empty tanks which are filled with equal amounts of mobil & shell
moneys on the mobil, cause they are running the car to empty on each attempt, but they didn't drain the fuel line at the start, yet they will on the 2nd run :blip:

they running 98 or 95 mobile gas?
that would be the only difference.
hardly a fair test - only way to do it would be to set it to cruise control 100kms around an overal track. It is false advertising however if shell are suggesting their fuel will make a car go significantly further.

Same course, same distance, same driving conditions, shell went 7 kms further ... BIG savings ... yeah right ...

I agree. It was so close that any slight variable could make the difference. I don't doubt Fair Go's integrity, I think they really tried to be even, but yeah, as Ian said, not worth going too far out of your way to fill up with Shell.

What's that as a percentage difference?
Just guessing here, but assuming that a Civic has a 45 litre tank and returns 16km/l, that's a range of 720km. A 7km variation on this is 1%. That, gentle readers, is fuck all difference.

It's enough of a difference that they can't be sued or slagged off yet reel in the $$$ from poor unsuspecting motorists. I bet there are (were) plenty of codgers out there driving for miles just bo buy $10 worth of the stuff.

Hardly worth the fuss true but add on fly buys and credit card cash backs etc and you are still right on a Tui savings moment. Yeah right.
OK it suits me because I was doing it anyway where it suits. Cheers John.

They used a completely dry tank and put in 12 litres of Mobil for 174 km. When it ran out they rteplaced the tank with another completely empty tank and filled with 12 litres of shell for 181 km. 7 km difference works out at 4% difference.

Same here. I had a moment with a staff member at my local BP. They no longer enjoy lining their till with my money. I told the guy to go fuck himself as I left that day, He took down my rego as I drove away. Retard.

As I use diesel, petrol is not a concern .. & yes loyalty cards play their part, we have two shell servo's here one offers damn good service, the other shit .... the former is a newer brighter bigger shop, as for the other brands service is a high priority in one but not in others .. so I get my diesel where i can get loyalty points as well ;)

21st June 2006, 21:56
i don't give a rats ass how i'm treated as long as i get the best value for money..... and i generally don't go out of my way for a servo
but i always seem to run out of gas in my local area so 19 times out of 20 i end up at the local bp .....they give good service.....and i also go out of the way cus i like going for longer rides why go direct when you can detour?
but in saying that even if they gave shit service i would still go there....because most times i'm well onto reserve before i bother going near a servo and pushing a 160+ kilo bike to the nearest servo is not my preffered option, instead of going 1 km off course and knowing ill get where i want to and i get that extra little bit more of a ride....ipod cranking sunny's and a balaclave...ohhh the luxury...hate having to take all the shit off to go into a servo you can't have a helmet on so you have to take off your helmet...which means i have to take off the balaclave or it looks like i'm robbing them..
i spose thats another reason i always end up at the local bp because since they know me they don't mind me leaving all my helmet etc. on
crap babbling over... as you were

Any gain by rights should only be incremental.

just a really stooooopid thought.....
in theory it is putting in the exact same amount of gas so for shells gas to make you go further you would have to get more power out of the same amount of fuel.....to use less throttle or watever therfore using less fuel.....ummmm hmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmm

even if said fuel did give you more power or economy it probably wouldnt be that much better for you at the end of the day unless you were conservative about it.
When broadband came out a lot of people were conned by the 'its faster so you spend less time' kinda line, which is bullshit. Everyone knows that at the end of the day you did more for longer.
Same with better fuel for the same price, if it did work, you'd probably end up riding harder knowing that you'd have more fun for the same price and economy as the other stuff.

I'm not fussed which petrol station I go to.. I'll go to Shell if it's the only thing near me at the time(DX Mail).. I know where the petrol stations are when I'm working (my route), I'll always go to the closest one (don't care which brand).. just won't go to BP (98 fuel for the ct isn't worth it, I run it on 95, which actually goes further than 91)..
Proven theory (for the ct at least)..
if you use 91, you need to fill up more, if you use 95, the gas lasts longer (long enough to make about $1 difference every fill up (that's a $5 fill up)..

Besides, I dont pay for petrol, thats what the company is for.
Hey how come they dropped the octain level on 96 to 95?

It takes 0.0037% more ink or paint to produce a 6 than a 5 - by changing the 6 to a 5 over the course of the financial year there should be a 0.004% increase in profits....

i am a customer when im in street clothes putting petrol in mums car. they know me as a staff member though, as we rotate sites. plus, since im an employee, doesnt that mean i should get at least polite responses? lol.
i also run scuffy on 91...was going to experiment with the higher octane, but the price when too high for me to bother. 91 gets us from a to b with no hassle. lol. if i run outta gas, i will use whatever is closest...i once hit reserve getting back into turakina, where the only station is a caltex [i think?] so i had to use that. i did use to use shell, but the staff and site all got a makeover....they are way less helpful there now.

That's right. While we're groaning about 2 cent increases, 4% fuel saving is like having 6.5 cents off each litre of petrol. Not bad when you think about it that way...
On a 16litre tank that's all of $1.04!! Woohoo!! :doobey: I'm grabbing all I can get, but don't ride more than 500m each way out of your way to get it! :nya:

Rather than show the actual ad on screen and prove themselves fools.

When the ad was live it was still impossible to read the fine print. Also, the fine print was not on screen long enough for anyone to read it right through even if it was legible.

I fill my bike at Shell nearly all the time, as I ride past a couple between home and work regardless of which way I go.
Used to get 340 - 350 Km from FULL to reserve every time.
Now get 310 -320 Km before reserve.
Don't think my riding style is changed in the last month or so.
Makes it about 10% reduction is fuel economy on the "Go further" formula.
Was surprised to see the Fair Go result, not at all what I have experienced.

i recon it would be more accurate if you took 2 of the same car, brand new of the ship, get a good garage to tune the cars exactly the same. then fill both cars up with say $20, and then idle them both at 4000 rpm, and see which one runs out of gas first

They Mythbuster tested it.. the only thing that would blow up an engine was putting bleach in the oil.. pretty much nothing in the petrol 'made it go boom' and the mothballs you could hear a 'vroom vroom' style change in the engine..

they won't do that, because Shell have paid a lot in advertising that their petrol lasts longer.. could you imagine the negative publicity when they lose? :D
