Good point... we should have them sitting around doing nothing? I thought that would be abld the same cost to us taxpayers?
Wouldn't it be more appropriate if the US Navy Seals helped? Some of them good ol' boys could have there'selves a BARBEEKEW!

No body actually paying as I understand. Zoo's asked folk around devonport (which logically includes the Navy bods) to keep an eye out. Hopefully the Navy being full of bright eyed , super alert, on the ball , watchfull fellas and fellaettes, they should spot him real fast.

Rates irritate me. Local Govt. is all about taxation without representation. The bastards have elections but never let you know that the election is on until two minutes before you have to vote and then you're supposed to vote for 30 people. By the time you've tracked down the info needed to vote for the nepotistic bastards the election is done.
Then they charge you the price of a nice 2nd hand dirt bike for a library card and some flower beds in the CBD.

HUtt City Council buddy. They don't even do rubbish pickups any more, it costs you money if you report a problem with the council owned entry to your driveway, and $500 for them to remove a derelict car.
If your mains water supply fucks out, ring a plumber. The council will charge you $100 to look at it.

Well, if we had something like a natural habitat for her , with other otters and stuff , I'd agree. But reality is , that if they don't catch her she'll either be squashed by a car, killed by a dog, or starve to death, not many fish filled streams around Devonport these days.

Capital value rating is archaic. Local body charges should be levied on services provided to residents, and not just to property owners. And there should be some accountability for cost increases. Local body rate hikes are a significant contributor to inflation, and councillors should be made to explain their "costs plus" mentality.

22nd June 2006, 13:04
Now over in the lovely Porirua, Finn would like this, last year they must have changed the rating formulas, because the rates on higher value houses went down while those on cheaper houses went up. Make the peasants pay seemed to be the theme.

Ah fuck, I've got so much to say here.
Yes we're are overtaxed, currently to the tune of 8 billion dollars. This is daylight robery. In theory, Governments should only tax the people enough to run core services and infrastructure, that's it. Not only are we being overtaxed, but we all have very little to show for it. Regardless of previous governments, NZ always just manages to get by. Not a very dynamic country at all and we are not taking seriously on an international scale. What's more is the future is looking very bleek indeed. Social welfare is a real problem. For years we have been dishing out money yet our social problems have got much worse. Givers get takers - simple.
On the rates front, we're actually quite cheap compared to other countries. However we still don't have much to show for what we do pay. The problem with Auckland is there are just too many Councils wasting money. I do some business with them and the waste makes me sick. Another note is that rates are calculated on property value - another rich tax basically. This is unfair cause 2 neighbours living next door to each other will use the community services equally. Why should the person with a house worth 200k more pay more?
Wolf
22nd June 2006, 14:31
What, even if it's not yours?
Jeez, that's a bit rich.
Dave
No, Dave, that's how the council gets rich...
Wolf
22nd June 2006, 14:47
Why should the person with a house worth 200k more pay more?
Person spends his/her money to buy a better house/section - say, right on the beach front - and spends money to improve it to increase its value. Council, who did not supply the beach and has done absolutely nothing to enhance the value of the property, ups the rates.
What a pack of fucking criminals!
I heard of some poor shit living at the end of a "private road" (fucking long driveway shared with his neighbour) that he and his neighbour built and paid for, getting his water from the roof, sending his waste to a septic tank (which gets pumped out at his expense if full) and being charged something like an extra $3000 on top of what his neighbour is paying for rates - because his property is more valuable.
The council is not supplying him with anything more than they supply his neighbour - they're actually supplying nothing more than a rural road that doesn't even go past his property - and yet they feel justified in charging him $3K extra for his property because it is on the beach front (a fact that already cost him a pretty penny when he purchased the land).
Time for itemised bills from those bastards, I think - for each and every service they provide, the value of house and land does not enter into it. No mains water supply, no sewerage, no rubbish pick-up = SFA in rates, just to cover roading - based on how close your house is to the road. If you have to drive over 500 metres from the council-supplied roading to get to your house, they should start paying you a "rebate".
Finn
22nd June 2006, 14:53
Not to mention the elderly who have been forgotten. They spent their entire lives working their arses off (not like us), paying tax and they're being screwed from all angles. Some of them may be sitting on a $500,000 house and can't afford electricity let alone rates.

Come live in Waitakere City, Ok we get... well we get.... something I guess.
Let me see rubbish pick up is user pays, water is user pays. Oh I know, we are getting a lot of new traffic lights and a big new council building.

Well I am a rural owner.
We: Maintain our own 1 km long private raod; have a septic tank which we maintain; pay for our own water supply; pay a contractor to collect our rubbish; etc etc. Rough cost of $2200 pa
For all these non-council services we pay rates of $576 pa. So its very similar overall to what CaN pays in Waitakere.

Hutt City Council and a few others around the country contract Excell Corporation for a lot of it's maintenance and service work. Last time I heard, Excell was owned by Eric Watson a man who knows how to make a buck.
If a vehicle is abandoned outside your property call the police. They should come and check it out and if obviously abandoned, they will arrange collection with council. The police probably get charged $400 for being such good customers.

As an American it should be very clear to you and it goes to the root of your statement - (no) taxation without representation. If you live here (for the minimum period, I think it's three years) and pay taxes, you should get a say.
I think you'll find it's the same in most democracies.

not in the States.. you have to have Citizenship to cast your vote.. ( not like it matters) also you can have your voting rights revoked if you are convicted of a felony or tax evasion. we also have the Write-In option where we can write anyones name down from dogcatcher to president
i dont vote on a party line when i vote.. we actually have a few months to research candidates before election day .. not like here where the PM can call for a vote whenever her numbers are right.
(guess i shouldnt throw stones though.. look what MY vote counted for last time in the States..)
if residents can vote .. whats to stop a foreign state from loading NZ up with citizens and turning the vote after a few years? ( Welcome to the City Of Sails - New Bejing)

Don't you find it slightly ironic that one of the USA's founding principals (no taxation without representation) is not applied to to a significant minority?
There is no way a foreign state could "load" NZ with citizens - we're talking residents here, not visitors. As you would know, getting residency in NZ is not easy....
