Riding into the city for work this morning down Murphy Street and a huge gust of wind came out of nowhere and knocked me off my bike!! (it was relatively calm at the time). Weird that I was stationary at the time as I usually lane split all the way down there. It must have looked pretty funny as I struggeled with it for a few seconds then just toppled over. A nice taxi driver stopped in the lane next to me and helped me pick it up which is more than I can say for the assholes in the cage behind me that just sat in the car, thoroughly inconvenienced by the hold up.

Come to think of it Murphy Street is parallel to Molesworth Street which is renowned for being the windiest street in Wellington, hmmm might take an alternate route on the way home....

Glad to hear you got some help. Hopefully not much damage done to your bike.. or yourself (other than pride). Did you only have 1 foot down when you were stationary? or both.. an alternative route maybe advisable eh?

No damage - my mirror folded under as luckily(?) it was already broken and held on with only one bolt and some duct tape....

I had both feet down at the time, perhaps I'm just a bit weak

Very unlucky perhaps.. Were you sitting on the bike with both feet on the ground, or standing (stradling the bike)? but then some 'gusts' of wind can be very strong indeed.

Glad you're ok. There are a few nice people out there, only a few though mind you!!
A while back I stalled and dropped my hubby's bike at an intersection and while getting up off the road the asshole in a car behind me who saw it happen proceeded to drive around me, but a couple of guys driving down the road who didn't see what happened, stopped and ran across the road to see if they could help, which I thought was really nice and restored my faith in there being some nice people out there. You know, bike heavy, weak female, we'll help you!!:blip:

Hmmm think I was sitting with both feet down but fought it for a while before I actually gave way? Feeling a bit silly :o

Hey mate.. no need to feel silly. It happens... and it certainly can happen in windy welly (well the last time I was there quite a few years ago now, I was blown into a shop! luckily there was someone trying to get out of it at the time.. or I could have easily ended up lying in the doorway, pity it was a grumpy old man and not a lusty lady.. hahaha)

Funny, people are more willing to help once they realise you're a female - perhaps they don't want to offend anyones masculinity by implying that they can't pick it up themself.

I wrote off my previous bike a few years back, I slid down the road while my bike slid ahead of me and eventually hit a bank and exploded in a shower of plastic. I ended up lying in the middle of the lane while cars drove around me! After a while some guys from a nearby apartment who had been on their balcony and seen the accident turned up to help me out. I'm sure it must be illegal not to stop and help someone who is clearly injured.

Fark, it's windy out here in Petone. I work just down the road from the Post Centre. I'm not suprised that the CT110s were stashed away.

Nice tail wind coming to work, but I'm not looking forward to the ride home.

Sorry to hear about the GSXR as well. There can be a real wind tunnel effect through the city, and a light sportsbike can act like a sail.

Don't feel silly, it can be bloody difficult to stay upright in Wellyies wind.

I find the trick is not to stop, if you are moving then you are stable. The best place to stop is between 2 cars, use them as a wind brake. Do not split past the queue to the very front of the lights, the worst of the wind is found there.

Nothing cures that feeling better than sharing it with the world on the internet.

I think I would be tempted to bin it on purpose. Do it in such a way that there is only minor injury, but OSH would make sure that situation could never happen again.
