Sort of an alternative to 'a Valentino Rossi copy cat for those that think they can ride' or 'a two-wheeled armchair complete with sound for those with no adrenaline left in their blood'
All bikes have got their detractors.
Harleys are just an easy target for those with a 2nd place bike.
And I see you are one of those 'other' riders - as in there are two types of riders - those that ride Harleys and the others that want to ride one' heh heh heh!!!

Hahah!! You did spend the $$ on a rolling couch! ;)
Don't have strong feelings either way... the article is funny though...
I wouldn't mind riding one to see what the fuss is about, but definitely wouldn't buy one, much less 2!!

Nope, just ask White Trash how much of a couch a T-Sport is.

Well, a 1.5 litre bike... you'd hope it was ait more than a couch wouldn't ya?
(2) Sure I can!! 2nd mortgage notwithstanding...

Anyway, I stumbled onto the article looking for what people say about inline4s vs vtwins. Yeah, peak power vs torque and all that...
I'm looking to upgrade from my 250 to a 600-ish, and am tossing up between an inline4 sportbike or vtwin sport-tourer.
Generally...
Inline 4s
Higher hp figure (potentially faster)
More sport focussed
V-Twins
Better torque (useable power)
More comfy
Cheaper
Guess I'll need to go out and ride afew and decide which one my arse feels better in isn't it?

You can also add "Easier maintenance and engine accessability" with V-twin, especially air-cooled ones (although most now-a-days are water-cooled).
But an inline 4 will be heaps smoother.

So, and from what I've been reading, the benefits of an il4 are to be experienced only on a race track, riding like the Terminator's behind you? (Hang on, he's riding a harley, so no worries... ;))

The fact that an inline4 sounds fast where-ever it goes convinced me to buy one. Took a bit of effort to ride with the revs higher though.

Mind you, the article was written in 1993, way before the V-Rod...
I didn't know Porsche had worked with HD before that - interesting..
Comparing HDs and Sports Bikes is like comparing apples with steak though - what's the point?
Note how the japs try to imitate HD "features" such as pushrod OHV engines in their cruisers.. Let's face it, all cruisers tend to be image-driven in their design don't they?
Another outdated point in that article was the comment about French bikes - there are a few interesting but rare and exotic french superbikes out there now (e.g. Mondial Piega).

Just bought Duc-Gurl a new SV1000 with Yoshi's on it as I missed that Vtwin rubble too much. Plenty of poke for most of us but they win in the riding style for me.
Sure ok the inlines scream and go like buggery but nothing feeeeeeeeeeeeels and sounds better than a Vtwin rumble!
Once again it comes down to personal preferences

Usually more cylinders = more power, only because the cylinders, conrods and valves are lighter and can thus be moved at higher engine speeds. If you're prepared to use exotic materials, then a twin can produce as much peak power (e.g. WSB Ducatis).
Comfort: V-twins are not necessarily more comfy (depends on the specific model e.g. Ducati 916-998 are not know for their comfort levels).
Torque: IL4s can be tuned to produce as much or more low-end torque as a V2 e.g. a Bandit 12s, GSX1200-1400s etc.
On the flip side, V2s can be tuned to be sporty and peaky e.g. VTR1000SP1
In fact, the new jap supersports litre IL4s have the best of both worlds (although a Ducati 999R would put up a good fight too).
Cost: Jap IL4s are cheaper than Italian V2s, but more expensive than Jap IL4s only because no R&D gets put into Jap V2s anymore (due to WSB rule changes allowing litre IL4s). When the Honda VTR1000SP came out, it was more expensive than the Fireblade though..

For a biker, he just doesn't get it, does he? Who ever said bikes were all about logical analysis of the pros and cons? Who said a high revving four is "better" than a slow revving v-twin? They're completely different for different purposes!
Bikes are about emotional pleasure and we are all different. I happen to think the 1200 Sporty is a sweet bike and I'd buy one right now if I could afford it! I've liked the T-Sport since it was released, too. I love the style and the sound, which, coupled with the modern reliability and better comfort they've put into it, is enough for me. I love riding my old 'F', too, the sound of the little four on song is rather addictive and it handles, goes and stops as well as I can exploit. Different strokes for different folks and as long as we love what we're riding and enjoying ourselves, lets get out more and do it!
I ride with mates who have among them, 2 V-Rods, a Softail, an 800 Marauder and 955 Daytona. We respect each other and have fun when together, and isn't that what it's all about? The twit who wrote the article needs to take a happy pill!:sunny:

Don't Harleys have some sort of weird setup on the conrods/crank that takes a lot of mucking around or was that only the oldies..

Yep...............it's where they get that slow popping sound. The Harleys are not a true V twin. Not that I would mention that at a rally. In fact they are what is known as a split single....................don't ask me to explain that.........other than it's all to do with the connection/cycle of the conrods to the crankshaft.

Agreed, I've still got more than enough 0-120+ pickup to blow away fat sweaty 45 year old fucktards in their SS Commodores, pimply little fuckwit tossers in their piece of shit boyracer Subaru or Nissan wankmobiles from the lights, and yes, even a fair few other bikes, if I want to. Enough performance for overtaking as well. Yeah, it won't do much more than 220k tapped out, once again, if I want to, but that's still twice the speed limit. Over all, enough performance to wonder why I'd ever need a sportsbike, the increased HP at high revs is of little use on public roads in my opinion. I have nothing against any other bikes, however I'd just rather have the "grunt" of my HD which I consider more useable in real life than race-bred high HP. If I ever want to start racing, then yeah, maybe a move into the 21st century would be required. Until then, I'll just keep riding my HD until I feel the need to sell it for the same price (or more) than I paid for it!

But for some reason there is bugger-all difference when it comes to parts and accessories prices, they're ALL bloody expensive.
I remember an Aussie bike mag use to publish a list of commonly needed parts at the end of a bike-test write-up, I was amazed to see how close in price a lot of parts were, o.k. there was a bit of variation but on the whole they were pretty even when the lists were compared

No, they're more focussed on performance first. Cruisers are all about "the look" with performance a secondary consideration. Times are changing though, as we now have the emergence of the "performance cruiser", trying to combine "the look" with better dynamics. Still, all this seems to do is create yet another category of bike!

RG500, plenty of those around in their day, not over priced paying for the badge either. The RGV500 is a factory GP bike, no comparison to any model Harley (or anything else for that matter) so no surprise they were unobtanium. NR750, well what can you say, oval piston superbike, can't really compare that to any model Harley? R7s were a homologation special... I think he's talking about the price of the average Harley vs the price of the avg jappa mate.... although Harleys are much more realistically priced these days aren't they??
