got a ring from Sudeep (aka Motoracer)about 3 this afo, seems the wheel of the trailer I lent them to go to Manfield "just fell off" about 8ks out of taupo....

Rang them back and suggested they do the same thing as in "The Fastest Indian" movie, you know when the old guy gets the tree branch and ties it to the trailer to replace the wheel !!

But no, what do young guys do ?,, " oh its ok were waiting for AA recovery ""

Many a year ago a gaggle of us were coming back from neavesville (on the 25a kopu - hikuai road (sp?) when it was still open) from a big dirt ride and somewhere near pipiwai (sp?) the bike trailer lost a wheel. (I still have the KDX)

I was in the back seat on the drivers side and heard the noise as the trailer started dragging along the road. I looked to my right, by now the driver had already braked, and bouncing past us came the rear rh wheel off the trailer. Big bounces and looked all sort of slow motion.

It was a slight left corner and took us ages to find the wheel, big ditches on that road. The studs were shagged so we couldnt do the scavange nuts thing.

By this stage I thought the whole wheel bounding past thing was realy funny but the others kept looking at me like they thought it wasn' funny at all.

Anyway, we dragged the the trailer and bikes to a local's house and left them there over night and one of the team went back the next day.

Was it just the wheel that fell off, or did something break? Jon mentioned they dropped the trailor off in Taupo, and they are staying in sulpharcity for the night??

Dad was following a car and trailer down the gorge heading from Paeroa to Waihi and saw the wheel come off the trailer, catch up with and pass the car and fail to take the corner - but by sheer luck it hit a little gravel run-off that leads down towards the river and ran down that for a while til it vanished from view. To say the guy in the car was startled would be the understatement of the century.

The fact the wheel managed to find that little trail had dad in fits.

Fortunately dad was a fair way above and behind the bloke with the trailer - not only did he get a great view of the whole thing, he was able to stop in time to avoid hitting the (now stopped) car and trailer despite nearly pissing himself laughing.

Exhibit a) totally fucking munched nut which is meant to hold the hub for the left trailer wheel on. Instead the outer bearings turned into metal dust and the hub rode over the nut. It was ready to fall over given one more right hand corner.

Will post more when I have time, catching up on stuff as I only just got home. Good times. ;)

BIG THANKS TOO...

Firefight for lending the trailer and offering to pick us up and for starting this thread, frosty for getting in touch and making sure we were ok and giving us the details of trumpy and also offering to pick us up if need be, to trumpy for being an absolute sport and picking up both the trailer and bikes in one go and for helping us sort the trailer out. Also to goblin for letting four dirty young men sleep in the same house as her 15year old daughter :nono:

Was really quite lucky. Texmo looked back going through a corner and said to motoracer that it didnt seem to be following the car right. We pull over to see the tyre like this "/" out from the side of the trailer.

Started undoing the nuts and lifted the trailer on to a jack and as doing so the wheel and hub detach from the axle with no effort - one more corner and it could have been all over rover.

The right phone calls were made and it was about and hour and half til the AA man arrived, not to fix the trailer, but to say that he would need his other truck and would be another half an hour.

Soon after that frosty and firefight both offered to pick us up if things didnt work out but thankfully trumpy came to the rescue. After a few pie sandwhiches (food of champions let it be known) we were off to Goblins via Trumpy's work.

Thismorning we arrived at trumpy's where MR and Reece (one of trumpy's workers) went to work getting the nut off the axle. Unfortunately we didnt get any pictures of it, but the outer bearing had eaten itself and had chewed/welded the nut and washer together (see gwinchy's pic). Thankfully there was only slight damage to the axle and we were able to get a full bearing set for the trailer. After taking the other wheel off to see how it all went together we found that the other one wasnt looking to flash so tex and MR decided to replace that set aswell.

To be honest we are very thankful to the KB community because without the support we were shown yesterday I'm sure it would have been a very cold night in the car with 3 other guys followed by a very stressful situation of getting a stuffed trailer and two bikes back to Auckland. So again,
THANKS HEAPS to those that helped or offered assistance, it is very greatly appreciated as im sure MR and Tex will tell you once they've finished putting their bikes back to road trim.

When did this trailer last have a WoF? A wheel bearing that close to destruction should of been pretty easy to detect.Untill a few years ago a trailer couldn't be failed on a rough or noisy wheel bearing,it took years of pressure from the motor trade to bring trailer axles and tyres under the same rules as cars.

Trailers are a real worry - ''It's only a garden trailer,I only use it once a year to take garden rubbish to the tip''.....Trouble is,then **** wants to borrow it,loads it to the max and takes it to Levin at high speed....''Yeah but it just got a WoF last week....'' And so the Blame Control follows the trail back to some poor bastard who issed the WoF.

There is a rumour that all trailers will have to run commercial tyres.

When did this trailer last have a WoF?

about a month ago Paul, local country garage, I have no problem with the quality of there workmanship, have used them for many years for all our cars/vans etc. Its had a bit of use since WOF was issued, I should have checked it over before lending it out, knowing that it was going on a long trip.

Ah, the restful morning after.

Big ups to everyone involved in getting us four running again, despite the near accident we were extremely lucky on all accounts to be getting up and going as soon as we did. So many other things could've gone wrong but everyone was just so completely helpful. Firefight/frosty/Goblin/trumpy: If you ever need a hand with anything, call on us. We owe you all big time. Thank you heaps!

Certainly was an interesting weekend. Like the conversation I had with texmo and Motoracer went, you really can't buy memories and I don't think I'll forget this one for well, ever.

Cheers all!

I figured that, and I wasn't appointing blame, but just pointing out how easy it is for these poor buggers to get the blame for something not their fault.A trailer sits around for long periods unused, there is condensation in the hub,the grease drys out into soap.Truddle down to the garage and it's fine, off to the dump no problem. But loaded on a longhaul and the wheel bearing melts down. It's just in these days (on KB) of blaming others that the poor WoF inspector takes the rap.I'm sure it's only because there was no damage done, and who is the owner of the trailer that the blame brigade hasn't been on the prowl.

I have had my bike for 2 odd years now, when I first got it the guys at Cycletreads mentioned whilst putting the front tire on that my steering head bearings where not that flash and showed my the notch you could feel whilst up on the hoist, now since then I got three WOFs with it in a not soo perfect condition (ie I should of been failed on it) each time from a VTNZ WOF centre place in Glenfield, they also didnt check the discs and the rear is well out of spec even though it only gets used to hold me at the lights! Now this wasn't a little workshop but the VTNZ proper big testing station.

flat tyre no problem, had a spare one of those on standby, its a tad harder to pull a trailer wheel bearing kit out of you arse, let alone repair one that has eaten itself to bits, with only your barehands and minimal tools.

What Gareth said. BIG HUGE THAKS to F/F, Trumpy, Goblin and others who assisted with everything.

I owe you lot. Anytime, anywhere for just about anything. If you need me, I'll be there. I mean it!

BTW, the wheel would have come off at the very next corner, so we were very very lucky to have discovered the problem on time. Good on ya Tex for your keen observation. The bits and pieces grinding were saving the axel from being grounded off. When we stopped, there was only about 1mm worth of metal bits before the bare wheel was grinding the the axel it self! So we were VERY lucky!
