How common is Harley thieft?
My boss brought a limited edition Harley from AMP's last year. Really flash, loud, shiney red/silver Harley. Somewhere around the $60,000 mark I'd imagine. He then got about $5000-$10,000 in Mod's added onto it...
Last night while his Harley was parked in the basement garage of a flash apartment complex (most apartments in that building cost between $500,000 to $3 million. You need swipe cards and all sorts of security crap to get into the apartments and the basement area... Plus my boss chains up his Harley with two titanium locks, and it is alarmed...
Some asshole managed to get into the basement, and after trying to hack through the titanium locks realised he wasn't getting anywhere and hacked through the fucking frame of the bike.
Needless to say they couldn't steal the bike due to the amount of time and effort required to hack through the frame (after the failed attempt of hacking through the chains). And they just left the bike with a hacked up frame...
My boss is fuming and in the shittest mood ever... So no doubt AMP's will be seeing that bike again to get it sorted...
My bike is only worth $5000 (when in road legal condition that is), and I cried when I was told it was a write off... and I'd do pretty much anything to own a Harley like my bosses, so I can imagine how pissed he must feel... god knows how many smoke breaks I've had just sitting and staring at his HD.
Poor guy... And whats worse... they don't have camera's in the basement, so unless the asshole was stupid enough to leave finger prints it is unlikely they will catch the prick

Well not really. Right now I'm more into my sports bikes... and the cruiser (Harley or other) is a goal for when I'm financialy comfortable and can afford two bikes and possibly a car... so I've never really researched into Harleys or cruisers because i don't like to windowshop unless I can buy it in the near future... which I can't so i just stared at my bosses bike when he rides it to work and perve at it...

Makes you want to have data dots on your bike so that they at least can't make money on the parts. My car subaru and bike both have them I don't know the figures on bikes but crime on Subarus have dropped over 90% no theft excess on my bike through star insurance with them on as well.

These days it costs naff all to set up a DVR and a camera to record a location of interest. You can get motion detection software as well that can notice when something moves in the video field.
I have only played with this for a prospective client and we made a PC based set up where the PC would txt a mobile when something happened and you can send a still video capture (pxt) as well.
You would need 230v and an internet connection, PC, camera but compared to a 60K plus bike. Peanuts.

Some Harleys are so nice... (I'm not talking like black power gang type harleys... they look like shit).
Apparantly the HD my boss has, there are only three in NZ, 2 in the north island and one in the south... so the demand for parts here in NZ for them... I wouldn't have thought would be that high... Exspecially when your looking at paying that much for a bike you can no doubt afford the parts...

A sitting duck....The criminal element ride Harley's....they also steal them, and they always have, before that they rode and stole British bikes.Anyone who buys a HD without being aware of this is pretty naive,it's only a matter of time before they are relieved of their pride and joy.It may sound tough - but I've lived close to and amougst these types, and owned the bikes they wanted to steal...still do - you gotta want to keep your bike. You have to let them know you plan to keep it....if you see them in your area, you make sure they know you have seen them, that you are aware of their presence.I've had practice in this area, believe me....

Used t'be Triumphs. I absolutely detest bike thieves.
Suspect it's even worse nowdays with HDs, cos back in the day, if you were sizing up to steal a Trump, y'had to take into account that most of the people that rode Triumphs prolly were either not the sort of people you wanted to piss off, or at least had mates who were that sort. So it was a bit risky
But now with HDs most of the HD riders are accountants and sales executives and HR droids and stuff like that, that no-one's gonna be worried about. So they're pretty much an open target.
proilly a good thing your boss didn't interupt him.

haha you havn't meet my boss... he is certainly not the coward dressed in a suit type... he's the type you'd think was in some rough gang... but he's not... also he knows some of the most scary people I've meet in the last few months... He's trained up military style, also did work for the Aussie police force, Aussie army, security training and advice, self defense training and advise amongst heaps of other "I'm the man" type training. I'd be scared to hire someone to do anything to him, because he'd proberly hurt the guy I paid to hurt him... then extract the information and then come after me... kind of guy...
He doesn't sound very nice from the description, but the good news is... I'm in his good books... lol so i don't need to worry about any of the above

According to the resident copper in my Harley Club theft isn't as common as it used to be and actually Buells ARE at risk... there quite a few Gang members in Auck that ride them... Don't worry you Bolt & XB owners... its the Tubers they like...
I owned HDs for yrs and was always aware of the risk, you go to whatever lengths ya can to secure yr bike but the facts are that if someone REALLY wants it they will get it.
I don't consider an Apartment building carpark secure and altho I sympathise with the bikes owner I think he was a fool for parking such a valuable bike in such a public place.
If a car turns into my street at the same time as me I will turn around and go around the block till I'm sure I'm not being followed...
Guess this is what insurance is for.

Thats what I thought. Everyone in the apartments knows my boss and his bike. And they would all let him know if someone even took the cover off his bike. Also without a truck and a key card access to the basement, there is no way to move it... either up the driveway or over a wall into a muddy marsh thingy... up the driveway would get someones attention, and they would have been caught on the camera's. And who would steal a HD to somehow chuck it over a wall, causing even further damage, and then have to try push the bike out the marsh/mud to a waiting vehicle, and the only access big enough out of the marsh goes right past the fire station... and the firefighters would have surely known that someone pushing a HD out of a muddy marsh area (with no "in" access other than the area they came out of) as suspicious... and said something or taken a number plate at the least...
There is no way they could have gotten the HD out without someone seeing it...
But then... if they were doing it to be mean, whats the point in trying to cut the chains... rather just damage the bike right? That would be faster and more effective...
I dunno.

Yeah I'd say the same. About two weeks back we (my boss and I) were going to the company accountants to drop crap off and had to pop into his apartment to pick up some reciepts... when we pulled into the basement, the cover was off the Harley... he only had one of his chains on the bike then... when he came back downstairs he put the second one on... also mentioned that he brought his HD up in the bodycorp meeting the following week (90% of the owners also occupy thier own apartments) and asked if anyone had taken the cover off or saw who did... no-one saw/knew anything... I think he's had both locks on the bike since then...

Oh,they know he's got it alright - and if they get it he might find it offered back for private sale, just to rub in how powerless he really is despite the posturing.I know a guy who had this happen to him,he is the sort of guy who wouldn't hesitate to kill if he came upon these shits stealing his bike.To be offered the bike back like that is a low blow, whatever move he made, legal or illegal would make him a marked man,he was really furious! You gotta stay out of their radar.Actualy,as the gangs become more sucessful they get less involved in this sort of shit....as Buellbabe says,HD's are less targeted now.Over 25 years ago my wife sold her Trident - to a Hells Angel! We didn't sell it from home of course,we knew how to do it right....but it was still a worry having him come around, and keep ringing up.But he laughed and said ''Don't worry,we don't have to steal bikes anymore,I'll pay cash, and the cash will be clean,we keep our nose clean on petty crime,no use making trouble for ourselves''.It's happening with the Maori gangs over the last 10 yrs too, they have cleaned up their street act considerably....there is money to be made in new enterprises.

What's with this small penis shit? Do you have one?
Why do people need to compensate for having one? How did you compensate if you didn't have Harley.
So many questions.
Seems like those with a small penis or other inadequacies are the ones that want to have a go at somebody they percieve as being better off, after all has anybody slagged off and called the 'small penis' call to anybody with a older/cheaper/rougher bike than theirs??

It doesnt matter if your bikes a 60k full custom harley or a $800 XR100. Its something that you have worked and saved hard for and its utter shite if its stolen.
Harleys are a good steal because of the great interchangability of parts and the wrong people are after the right bits.

...they have cleaned up their street act considerably....there is money to be made in new enterprises.
exactamondo... a few yrs back a patched gang member paid $50Gs CASH for a HD at a Bike launch... yep CASH...
mindyou I don't think it is fair to automatically say it was gangmembers who tried to steal the bike...
last yr my bike was in the workshop of a prominent Auckland shop and the keys went missing... turns out someone had wandered in with another customer and thought it would be funny to uplift them! Couple of weeks later this F***wit was showing them off in a bar in Napier, laughing about it... Well there happened to be a certain Gangmember drinking in the bar who overheard and he took my keys off this a-hole, flattened him and bought the keys back up to Auckland and handed them into the shop. 17yrs ago in ChCh it was a fact that if a Harley, or a European bike went missing it would be in 4 different locations around the city within 3hrs ready to be sent to waiting customers, there was a huge black market for bits.
One of the RC45s that live at Honda country Ashburton was the one stolen on a test ride from Hamilton in the 90s, it got stashed & chopped then was found again. The owner of HCA brought it found the thief had bored a hole in the frame for ram-air. So now it sits there with a spare frame & numerous bits that had to be replaced.
There's been a few cases of bikes won at rallys etc have been swiped within a week of the new owner getting the machines home.
entry level trail bikes for kids & youths are a huge black market, most off road bikes are high on the theft list and also farm quads.
the majority of theft is by order & run by rings.
and the worst is "if they want something bad enough they'll get it"

The more you hear about the AA and their attitiude to motorcycles - the more you assume the acronym is for the 'A-holes Association'.

Yes,Indians are always very polite....do you ask for a discount when you are there? They always ask for one from me.I have a lot of trouble with the AA testing station up the road from me,first set up by locals,it now appears to be run entirely by Indians.I don't know how they get the qualifications to become WoF inspectors (AVI) but no way have they served any time as a motor mechanic, which really should be the base line standard. They haven't got a clue - but they are very good at going ''by the book'',they make no judgements, following company policy to the letter.I've had heaps of arguments with them, but they are unruffled and ignore me.

Interesting. I changed all my insurances over to them and when I got the VFR they insured that at a very competitive price.
Being a beaurecratic organisation, perhaps we should suggest to them that they require a motormacycle "department" to attend to our needs...?

The more you hear about the AA and their attitiude to motorcycles - the more you assume the acronym is for the 'A-holes Association'.
It bugs me cause they seem like nice people every time I go in there - and the maps and the touring stuff is great - whey can't they recocgnise just because we're on 2 wheels only we're road users too.
The more I have to do with them the less I like them...
I got accosted by some team of semi literate wide boy muppets in cheap suits and too much hair gell while rushing to extract my magnificent chariot from the grasping claws of Wilsons parking ($9 all day except a whole bunch more if you stay after 6pm - bastrds) trying to sell me another credit card with AA on it and american express.
I was polite - I said I didn't have time because I had to get my car out by 6pm to avoid a penalty (he didn't believe me and said so which irked me - a lot)
I then told him that as much as I respected the AA i wished they would concentrate on motorists (and bikers) rights rather han putting so much effort into becoming a major travel and financial institution. 'Oh but they arn't' says Muppet Boy (I'm getting PO'd now)
Look friend - I'm stressed, I'm running late and you are starting to annoy me - you are not getting a sale out of me today so lets agree to disagree OK?...
Could he leave it at that.... ooooohhhhh no.... He'd been a sales course and all he needed to do was ask some closed questions and it would all come right...
I was ready to kill the bastard by now but I merely flayed him alive verbally (must check blood sugar levels) and stormed off....
feckin AA membership renewal arrived at home the next day - debating whether to pay it or not.

They should read the relationships thread and give us beads and vouchers at least.
Sounds to me, like it's just a kind natured person, keeping yet another wanker harley rider off the road.
Public service I tell ya, the guy should be gettin paid for it.

Interesting. I changed all my insurances over to them and when I got the VFR they insured that at a very competitive price.
Being a beaurecratic organisation, perhaps we should suggest to them that they require a motormacycle "department" to attend to our needs...?
I suggested something simular in another thread awhile ago. Just not too sure how many bikes would join. If they did a survey to find out and it made their membership worthwhile they may look at it..............but I wouldn't hold your breath.

As stated earlier, it's not just the big boys toys getting nicked. Someones 50cc Vespa got taken here in Jaffa Central not too long ago, and a 150cc racing bike got swiped across from the University of Auckland's library. As long as there's money to be made, someone is willing to do the deed.
I personally would not only do everything within reason to appease my insurance company, but a bit more too. Now where did I save that copy of the Jolly Rogers' Cookbook, the contact switches and the remote deto..., I mean 'dis'arming device?

It's because they are old. Very very old.

When I ...ahem....ran out of fuel on the '10 on the motorway a while back on the on-ramp from the gorge. I had heard that you can get a fine by Mr Plod for doing so. I was unsure what to do so I rang the missus who had just got to work, so not an option.
Anyway just then an AA breakdown truck arrived and he helped me out with a gallon,..oops, 4.5litres of fuel. I didn't have any money on me being a pay- by-eftpos-person, so he he said forget it and be on my merry way.:scooter:
Not all of the AA is bad.
