So I was sort of taking the piss and sort of telling the truth when i responded to the talk about the worlds greatest indian in another forum with my observation that 'Invercargill is a ghastly place - flat, inland and frigid'.
All three times I have been there it's been bloody terrible and i couldn't wait to get to Te Anau.
Tell me I'm wrong?

Dave, you are wrong.
Wrong to question the fact that Invercargill is in fact a hole.

I was doing a road trip of the South Island last year and planned on staying a night there.
When we arrived I went to Bluff for the photo at the sign post of course then drove around looking for somewhere to stay. After 10 mins of driving I thought screw this and carried on up to Te Anau and stayed there instead.
Invercargill definitely ain't one of the nicest places of been to and don't plan on going back there again.

Probably about as much of a hole as where I live. Will have to go there sometime and find out.

[Edit:] It actually has some sleepy charm to it, but it's certainly not a tourist destination. (It's a local town, for local people......)

Sorry dude, technically incorrect... its not inland, being on the coast and all...mind you depends how far you consider In'gill to cover these days... Otatara is where i used to live, 5 mins from the beach, and 3 weeks ago when i was there it seemed to have all joined up now, cant believe how big it has got!
Frigid: dunno 'bout that, whaddaya think they do to keep warm at nights?
Flat: errrr well a little bit, but has some lovely hilly roads nearby, where 'tis a nice place to ride a bike.
Tho I do remember having a few floods when i was young, but nothing like the snow we get up here.

As we've discussed before - places are what you make them - but man - purple sky and hail 2-3 visits.
But I hear you about living there not just rolling through.

Bluff. If you're going to give New Zealand an enema, you will be shoving the nozzle into Bluff...:blah:

If you think Invercargill is rough, try Bluff or Gore. I stopped for the night at Gore on the way to the Southern Cross last year and was sure I could hear the faint twang of the "Deliverance" theme tune in the distance. Very tempted to put a chair under the door handle of the motel room.

Mitigating all this is the amount of people that are 'from' there. (but live somewhere else)
I don't know anyone who 'is' there.
Anyway - I didn't mean this to be another dis - I just want to know if I have missed the point.

Yes, you are wrong. I have been to Invercargill a number of times, and on one of those trips it was a beautiful day. I remember it well, it was a tuesday in April 1977. :sunny:
All other trips to Invercargill have been in the rain.

nah not taken that way.. I have fond memories of invergiggle, lived there from about 3 till i was 13 years then we moved (before that it was balclutha  all the *good* people come from ther eh SD?), didn't have a lot of choice in the matter. Still have lots of relies down there, still a nice place and yes can be cheap to live...but for me personally ...just a little too far from the action.
Its got a race track that hosts a leg of the nationals... so is not all bad! :scooter:
yup, great track, maybe one day I will race on it :blip: ...only hopefully it doesn't piss down like last trip.

Ok, I was recently in Invercargill for business and too be honest I liked the place. It is small town (or city) NZ. The pace of life is slower than the big cities, the people are quite friendly.
It is cold, but it's not the damp humid cold of auck, or the howling gale of Welly, or the shitsville that is Christchurch (i mean really - cantebury: what kind of place has 24 decade power cuts? :killingme).
Kind of reminded me of some places in Ireland. Life ticks by slowly, not much to do but at the end of the day you still have your guiness.
Being a city person I'd get too bored. But locals seem to like it.

Well I've been holding back but time to set the record straight.
Invercargill is flat. It does rain - frequently sideways as southwest winds from the Roaring Forties pass by. It can be cold, although not as bad as most of Britain, all of Canada, and a fair chunk of the USA. In fact snow is unusual.
Lots of older classic buildings. Wide well maintained streets, easy parking, excellent shops.
An indoor sports stadium which you'd expect to only find in Christchurch. Pool complex. And New Zealands only indoor velodrome.
The people are noticeably more friendly than elsewhere and more trustworthy. Loyal too.
The scenery and access to the natural environment is world class.
It's also a great place to have a family and bring up kids. Top schools and excellent facilities. Nuff said. :2thumbsup

When that Southerly is blowing off the Southern Ocean nothing you wear will keep you warm. Spent a night there once August..............cold. God I've worked in blizzards but there is nothing like Invercargill or Bluff...............I shit you not.
Got lost in 'cargill once...............but that's another story.............like the time I lost my bus..............that one is too.

Folk get a strange look in their eye when I tell them I moved from Paihia in the Bay of Islands to retire in Hamilton. But I have realized that people are far more important than places. If you have friends and family in any place, Invercargall Hamilton or Kaitaia then that is the place to be.
One of my occupations while in Paihia (my family have been there for 180 years) was a locksmith. I was called out to change the locks on many houses where older people had come to enjoy the sun, sand, fishing and sea.
At least 40% of those people have packed up and returned to where their friends, children and grandchildren were.
People make places not climate.
PS I love living in Hamilton and the roads are much more fun to ride than most in Northland. I am among family and have made heaps of friends. What more is needed.

I was working for a property developer on the Gold Coast. True - big money and they actually had good stuff - none of that bay of islands(Qld) shite - and the sales manager starts talking to a punter:
FLANNAGAN: 'How are you enjoying the Gold Coast?'
PUNTER: (Sneers) 'This place is the arsehole of the earth.'
FLANNAGAN: 'Oh...Just passing through are you?'
Near cacked.
