Oh, that is seriously one f*$%#ing creature that gives me the shits!!!! Those are lethal to humans too, if I'm not mistaken.
Just imagine lying on the floor in your tent while on holiday in some tropical country when suddenly you feel a tickle on your left ankle. Thinking nothing of it you blindly give it a scratch like you would, then suddenly a searing pain shoots up your arm from your hand, where this creature has just sunk it's heathen "fangs" into. You scream, shaking your arm pointlessly, but the demonic creature snags all 25 - 35 pairs of it hard, spiny legs around your wrist. You scream, knowing that this primitive creature has prevailed over perceived intelligence, and nothing you, nor your myriads of tech/med gadgets can do will stop the haunting pain, and the knowledge that you'll soon end up entwined, like a mouse in the jaws of a centipede...

Imagine...... Going to bed one night.. You turn your light off, your room is dark.. You try going to sleep but you start to hear this strange scratching noise. You lie away for sometime. Listening. It must be a mouse. It has to be a mouse. The sound seems to be coming from the wall. You turn the light on, to get a glimpse of a rather large centipede, slip down between your bed, and the wall. For the next two weeks, you refuse to sleep in your room because you were unable to find the centipede. And it was bound to still be in there somewhere. :wait:
Read a few things bout them being poisonous when their fangy like things at the front are green. Don't know if thats true though. But apparently they do give a rather nasty bite.

Eeeww! My daughter stood on one in her bedroom a few years ago. Felt it squirm around under her foot & let out the blood curdling, wake the dead scream!! Drowned it in flyspray then preserved it in resin(turned it into a paperweight). Freaky critters:eek5:

They are not lethal. That is the same size as the variety found around Cook islands and other pacific island nations, the NZ versions are only 10-15cm long or so fully grown.
My father has been whacked by one before, he had localised paralysis for about 3 hours... not nice. Couldn't move his arm. They usually hide in rotting logs and eat all sorts of stuff. Don't play with them and they won't bother you.. simple. - It's called self defence. Edit: not to disimilar to taking out a wing mirror....

Scolopendra gigantea, commonly identified as the ‘Peruvian giant yellowleg centipede’ or ‘Amazonian giant centipede’, is the world's largest representative of scolopendras which can reach lengths of up to 26 cm (10 inches). The species inhabits the North and West regions of South America and the islands of Trinidad and Jamaica. It feeds on lizards, frogs, birds, mice and even bats.
The body consists of 21-23 segments which are coppery red or maroon in color and comprises up to 23 pairs of yellow-tinted legs (with one pair per body segment); the legs are adapted for fast walking (even running) and for grasping prey tightly before poisoning and killing it.
The centipede has modified claws called forcipules which curve around its head and can deliver venom into its prey to assist in immobilizing it. The venom is toxic to humans; (the poison contains acetylcholine, histamine, and serotonin) and causes a local sharp pain (similar to a hornet-sting), and severe swelling, chills, fever, and weakness.
S. gigantea is a popular pet among arthropod fanatics – however, the centipede should not be handled without protective equipment given that even a trace of the venom coming in contact with skin can cause a reaction. The condition of having been poisoned by the venom of a centipede in this genus is called scolopendrism.
Female S. gigantea centipedes exhibit parental care, guarding and tending their nests of eggs. Juveniles are very dark red or black in color, and very thin with large spherical red heads. They molt several times before reaching adult size.
The centipede is featured in BBC's television series Life in the Undergrowth, written and presented by David Attenborough. In the series the centipede is filmed entering a bat cave and catching a bat in midflight. The predation of the centipede on bats in a Venezuelan cave is also discussed in the "Carribean Journal of Science," Volume 41, No 2, 340-346.
