View Full Version : Changing my dangerous ways

riding round early this afternoon riding along like a moron again lane splitting in 50 zones and all that stupid crap speeding and so on go round this car and they gave me evils....oh watever look at something else... i think to myself get up to some lights... stopped at the lights....nailed it redlining every gear thinking i am god. flicking it through corners at just plain stupid speeds.
then i dunno wtf it was but i just looked behind had miles behind me thought time to change my ways...i have no idea what bought about this change.....stomped on the anchors down to just hovering on 50 kph... and rode round 50 kph zones at 50 the whole day yes if traffic was doing 55 or so i hovered there but not the usual 90-110+ lane splitting speeds.....
i am sure this is a resolve to myself i need to and am going to keep before i either loose my license or kill myself or somebody else because of my dangerous ways....
thank you to all the people that had told me to just chill and stop playing ghostrider...
i'm sure i will be much better off for it....
and ive had my kicks of being a retard on the roads.... it's time to grow up be an adult and respect that the roads are for others too....
so i am resolving to ride sensibly from now on mainly not speeding but also stopping the weaving in and out of lanes riding down the road standing on my seat....riding down the road with both feet slung out to the same side of the bike doing the can can......
time to grow up....and i did...all afternoon...
and i plan to keep doing this....somethings triggered me
i was always so angry with myself that i rode the way i did and had no self control or patience on the roads...
now ive woken up and plan to keep it that way...
i know your probably all going to poke shit at me about this thread go ahead i know what ive been doing up until now was stupid and down right dangerous ....
Cheers: Mark

Nope, no need to poke any shit. I'm pleased to hear that you have suddenly realised that absolute speed isn't always neccessary. Rather its nice to know that you can do it if you need to, but its not always needed.
I find I rarely exceed the speed limit in built up areas, and its not because of any potential fine. You just don't save much time by pushing the boundaries.
So good on you.
Woulda thaught having someone you cared about in life would have helped but it didnt.. Can you now understand my wake-up call story?
Good to hear, hope it sticks.....

If I hear any more bullshit about buying a ZX10R and riding down the motorway at 300kmp/h lane splitting I'm going to print this thread out and jam the paper down your throat until you choke to death.

Interesting post Mark. The way I see it you have to understand why you were riding so fast in the first place. Could be a lot of reasons. Financial reasons?, inferiority complex? The girl next door say no?, frustrated about something?, if you don’t get it sorted, there is the danger of falling into your bad habits again. Oddly enough a good woman works wonders, and I’m not talking for a good poke here…of course it does help.
Find a friend you trust and won’t brag, have a chat. If you aren’t happy with that, try writing what bothers you on a peace of paper, read that again in 24 hours, then write some more. We all have our bad days, some are dead now. We don’t want that with you.

Well done Mark, we all behave badly at some stage but it takes an honest person to acknowledge the fact and a braver one to state it in print. Good on you for standing up and admitting it!

Get a track day bike as a precaution, I understand the pissed-off attitude bringing the monster out when I was young.
A couple of pretty bad accidents (other people had that I was racing on the street) sorted me out, but it still took a few years before I had even 90% control.
My wife (girlfriend at the time) has some stories to tell of the idiot chasing someone around town and beating the shit outta them at traffic lights... smashing cars... running other cars off the road etc, I just couldnt help it.
I got into bike racing, toyed in sky-diving and a few demo derbies, but I still have a small problem even now.
now, 10 years on... I have a family a mortage and somit to lose... so apart from the odd "door kick" Im fine... I havent hit anyone and have stuck mostly (pretty much)to the laws road rules.
Good on ya... but be warned, It aint over yet:bye:
That's good news virgin. Now all that's left is a haircut, getting layed, finding a job and tidying up your room.
Good boy.

Mark, all the shit we babble about living long enough to grow up is just noise - until you start to think and act differently.
I rode with some old friends a couple of weeks back and was surprised that they rode like fuckwits in the city - wheelies out of the lights, 90KPH in a 50 etc etc etc. Then when we got to the open road and the twisties - they both slowed right down BECAUSE THEY COULDNT RIDE VERY WELL.
Both were on 1000 modern sportsbikes.
I guess what i'm trying to say is that for me at least, i'll push myself and take risks where i'm not going to hit a car or a pedestrian (and there's less cops).
Glad to see you thinking about it mate.

90-110kmh 'laneplitting' im assuming in 50kmh zones - that explains your piss poor fuel economy.

It helps if you're tall too.
I noted yesterday that sitting on the Buell I'm taller than a Hi-Ace Van.
This has lean angle repercussions sometimes - yesterday I had to change lines a few times because my head and shoulders were on the wrong side of the road while boots and wheels were 1200mm on the right side.

About two months ago, I had a similar "realisation" :nono: while having a bit of a let-loose on the way home. I got home, broke out the perma-marker and wrote "Drive nicely, comprende?" on the dashboard. Dont really know why, just did. Sometimes though, the words glaring back at me just don't register when you happen across a choice corner or two. Kind of like the warning "smoking causes lung cancer" on a pack of B&H as you break out another stick and light up...

Good on ya for making the decision to be careful in the suburban zones.
In the late 80's early 90's there were the infamous vic club castlepoint/riversdale Grand Prix (it alternated each year)
All vic club racers were expected to put lights on their bikes once the nats were finished and got for this ride, same deal every year, cruise to Masterton, get gas at the mobil, then soon as the 100 kph sign came up the invisible flag would drop. This one year I was on my GSXR1100, I took off and tied to gap everyone, I'd look in my mirrors at the end of each straight and swore I could see some lights, so I kept pushing harder and harder. It got to the point where I was sledging the frount so hard that the rubber wore away between the tyre grooves creating these weird steps in the tyre! When I got to Castle point, I waited, and waited and waited for the next person I at first realized that the glint from the sun was all I'd seen in my mirrors. As the minutes ticked by I began for perhaps the 1st time start to think about my mortality. I decided I'd head back in mid pack and show some discipline.
About 20km's out of castle point while in mid pack this FZR1000 bins right in front of me, I managed to avoid the carnage that followed, then why standing there on the side of the road looking at the bike a guy on a RGV250 got a bad case of fixation and rode between me and the ditch on the grass just brushing me as he went past.:gob:
So it was back to the nice safe frount after that, I just took more care when looking in my mirrors :blip:

Mark, drive to the conditions when they change reduce your speed.
I always get a bit of a giggle at the wording to this one.
So you're cruising on a good road at 100kmh, the road gets damp (conditions shange) so you reduce your speed to 80. The road dries (conditions change) so you reduce your speed to 60. The road gets a bit bumpy (conditions change) so you reduce your speed to 40. The road gets smooth again (conditions change) so you reduce your speed to 20. Next change in road conditions will see you stopped.
It never allows you to increase speed when conditions change for the better.

Touring the Mainland a couple of summers ago my lady and I were going so slow, dropping down through the cogs, we got to the stage where we decided to actually stop. It dawned on us that there WAS no hurry. The West Coast turned on such stunning weather that we postponed our stay at Lake Paringa for 24hrs just so we could go real slow for the next day also. It works sometimes.
