View Full Version : Buddy and ignore lists

Joni
3rd July 2006, 14:18
From what a few members have told me they were not aware of this function.

When you click on a particular members name you will find the option to ad this person to your buddy list or ignore list.

Buddy list – basically when they come on line you will see them with a cross next to their name so you will know immediately when they are online (eg Spank me+), but more importantly people who are not on your buddy list will only see your basic profile information, where the people on your buddy list will see all the details you have filled in, including emergency contact numbers etc. which is handy...

However the function I need to bring to peoples attention is the ignore list. We are receiving more and more complaints from people about “abuse”. If there is a member who bothers/offends you, step number one is to put them on your ignore list. You wont see their posts (unless someone quotes them) and you wont see the rep they give you. This will eliminate 80% of the issues people are having. Then if you feel that particular person is still hassling you let us know.

If you have any questions please pm me.

Alrighty then….
:D

Can the 'ignore' function be made to also stop their PM's?? Then that 80% of which you speak can be 100%. THAT would be real valuable.

Put someone in your ignore list and take a look to see what it does. They're just as easily removed.

SpankMe

You can't.

There is always the question but why should I/we put that person on ignore. Just make him/her stop.

The answer to that question is that unless you are willing to take reasonable steps to ensure that person doesn't bother you then you're probably not going to get much sympathy. The moderators/admins are not here to cuddle people and tell them it's alright the bad man/woman won't hurt you. First step is to help yourself. 95% of the time the ignore list makes the problem go away.

if the red rep you had from someone dissappears does that mean they put you on their ignore list?

SpankMe

You got it the wrong way round. When you put someone on your ignore list, all reps from that person disappear from your received rep list.

Thats weird I have no one on my ignore list and my red rep has gone, does rep comments have an expiry date so to speak??

No but sometimes rep drops off the bottom of the list as people give you more rep.

EDIT: Your rep page in the UserCP only shows the last 30 reps that you have received, so everytime you get a new set of rep points, the rep box and comment that was in number 30 on the list drops off the bottom, but you do not lose any points.

how can you tell if someone has put you on their buddy list or not?
Technically, you may be able too.

When clicking on a person's profile, if they have you as a buddy, you will be able to see far more detail, if they have filled in it.

Not bulletproof, but when seeing Real Name, Emergency Contact Details, etc, its a sure sign they have you as a buddy. Very helpful, if something bad happens...

It appears hiding reps only works for senior members. It's tied in with viewing who left rep.

I am sorry to announce that I have officially added my first KBer to my ignore list. This is a sad day indeed.

I'd like to think that I do not get offended by 99% of what goes on round here. The other 1% well, I figure that people have a right to have opposing, even if in my view, offensive opinions. But when in the case of this particular member they have continually had shit to spout, then even I draw the line. I spout a fair amount of shit myself, but it is never abusive, divisive, or intended to offend for the sake of being a prick.

I'm sorry you have wasted my time. I'm not sorry to you because you will in all likelyhood read this and post some crap response, I'm sorry because you are contributing to the demise of a fantastic resource and great community.

When you sign up to be a member of KB you need to validate your account by clicking on a link that is emailed to you.... everytime you change your email contact this is required to re-activiate your account (its like a security measure)...

The ignore function works on your end, ie, if you ignore me, you won't see my posts, but I will see yours unless I add you to my ignore list (ignoring mod functionalities).

You can't really become invisible to them per se. Only other setting I can think of is to appear invisible online, ie, when browsing KB you don't appear online (green circle lit up next to your name). However, this won't make you disappear.

The ignore function is the first and recommended step by mods in dealing with any unwanted attention, but if someone is continually abusive then it's normally escalated to mods.

That is not entirely true Maha, I can delete the message using the selection box in the far left column, when I am quoted by someone I have on ignore........
I enjoy the ignore function for two reasons simply because it is what I would do to them in the real world.
For if they have nothing relevant to add to a converstion I simply pretend they don't exist.
Second reason is nothing gets at a dickhead who constantly says stupid stuff just to get attention quite like simply ignoring their existence. Its phycology 101........
When I want to mess with them, I just reply to them (without seeing their posts) with random stuff. like yes the warriors played shit or I agree that dress is not really your colour.
It removes any power they deludedly think they have..........
Of course I am not suggesting that is for everyone, but some are just not worth the effort of reading.
One issue that ignore does have is you can't see it when you are red reped by them it is not really a major problem as I only have two on ignore.
I would red them in return but why bother, its like why bother they are already losing at life........

reading through the pages the other thing that needs to be pointed that is wrongly stated or has been amended since the posts were created.
Is you can always see the last 10 red reps if you look on your reputation tab on the visitor page.
If the person or cretin that gave you the bling red or green is on your ignore list, it will not appear on the settings page though.

If your fornications are boring Mom remember some of us may have an oedipus complex:laugh:

Which is why this Moderator has resisted the urge to send this thread to a more "suitable" location.

Say what Hitch? this thread is like almost informative........

That's being ambitious? First start with an oedipus simple and see how it goes.

I've never used the 'ignore' function, but also, I cant see much point in the rep function. Under my name is a row of green blobs with a revolving barbers pole above the green squares. I have no idea what they all mean, good or bad. One day I will take time and learn how this website functions.

I just post without reading the previous 8 pages, jump to conclusions, assume my opinion is required and express views based entirely on rumours, untruths and unsupported assumptions.

Off topic, I will say that I have started some threads and have learnt alot on those subjects by others who have been there, done that and have far more knowledge than myself.

oh what have I done posting on this thread? Tried to be "smart" for once in my life and use the search function with my question instead of starting a new thread. Happy it is keeping a few of you amused again while my question was answered at the same time.

Win win

Count yourself lucky Miss K that you didn't get infracted for ''thread dredging'' which was the case a few years ago when I posted in a thread that hadn't seen a post was 18 months... shock horror!

The Mod team are not so highly strung as once were. (oh please please let that be grammatically correct)

I did think twice about it, but have read time and time again about people posting questions and threads that have already been covered in the past and not using the mighty "search" function. All my old red rep disappeared when my old profile disappeared. Was quite nice to see it all go to be honest.

But if you add them to ignore and it goes away anyway..........

If old issues weren't re hashed from time to time, the forum would have died years ago. Sometimes the search function results takes longer to sift through than does posting a new query, which usually produces up to date knowledge etc.
