View Full Version : Carb Cleaner and Cleaning

I brough some Silkolene (http://www.silkolene.com/) carb cleaner today from Mt. Eden motorcycles because I am too lazy to pull the carbs out and take them apart and do the job manually. I was just wondering how this stuff works. I guess its a solvent but if it just dissolves the grim in the carbs wont that shit go through the engine which I would have though isnt the best.
Also How much of a diffrence will cleaning the carb make? I know I wont get any preformance gain but will it make the bike last or run better?

Spray onto a rag before use.....always works that way for me man....oh,it's way cool stuff man,like,y'know.....

True true... Man it's so damn cool I flushed mine down the toilet last time there was a knock on the door late at night.. I thought it was the cops after my stash man...

Seriously - use in a well ventilated area...

Spray onto a rag its the shit you spray straight into the air intake after taking out the airfilter.
Dont take the piss I have no mechinace knowledge and have been sent up the road to get power bands before...

I would not now get it on my hands as it is hard on you liver and brain.
Because you adsorbed it though your skin.
I can not find a very informative post on it.
I will keep looking and post if I can find it.

I just consider it one of the perks of my job - I've inhaled and asorbed a couple of 209 litre drums worth of the worst solvents known to man in my career.I mean....should I really look like this at my age?

Carb cleaner dosnt work, did everything. then jsut to be sure I pulled the bottom of the carb off the float bowl or what ever and it was full of red cack.

I've not heard of such a product, and I'm "guessing" there is no short cut to doing this job.
Heres a brief guide from when I did the 750 just recently, yours should be quite similer....

Take the tank off, then take the airbox off your carbs, lossen the 4 clamps that hold each carb on. Rotate the carbs up and off the intakes.
Do not undo the throttle cables. Lay a cloth across your motor and intakes. Undo the 4 screws off the top of each carb one at a time, beware, as each cap has a largish spring under it, so hold the cap down as you undo that last screw.
Gently pull the slides out the top (they have like a rubber boot on them, wipe underside of those with clean damp cloth.)
Spray the cleaner in there, then wipe out witha clean damp cloth.
Put the clean slides/springs back in, make sure the rubber boot seals properly (use a "little" vasaline round the edge to get a good seal)
Tip the carbs upside down and take the 4 screws off that hold the float bowls on, again spray and wipe clean after a minute or so.
At this point you can choose to remove and clean the brass main jet (prob slotted button jets for your model) You can also get a thin flat head screw driver and remove the pilot jets which are buried deep in the cavity beside the main jet. Clean these with thin wire and use the spray. Reasemble put carbs back on intakes by pointing them in and then rotating down and they will pop into place..reassemble from there...

And if you don't know what your doing make sure you pull the carbs apart one at a time so you can crack open another one and remember how it all went together!

I'm looking at doing this to my CBR 250 and i have a few questions,

if you dont know alot ie only know what i ahve read on here, can you seriously F*** things up?

do the carbs need to be rebalance or any thing like that once they have been taken apart and put back together?

It depends on what you did. If you messed around with the jets, you will have to balance it again.

Carbs are pretty simple, I (who has had very limited mechanical knowledge) have taken mine apart a few times. Not too much can go wrong. Take them apart one at a time and you'll be sweet. If your super worried or anything grab a haynes manual.

I've alway used Carb cleaner as a tool When the carb is already apart.

It's not like you want the stuff your trying to clean out of your carbs flowing through your motor!
