hello people

well the time has come to think about a upgrade currently i have a 1999 virago 250 which i have loved riding and getting my full licence ( well due in august ) , i have been offerend a 1992 400 virago with only 11K on the clock i know its a import and shaft drive

a quick look over it looks to be a tidy bike

should i go for it or wait for a nice 1100 virago to come up for sale or would this be a too big of step with only 12 month riding time ?

what points should i look at ie weak points etc

can any one value the 250 1999 8k red photos to follow

at this stage i will be replacing the bike pack system back to the std one and using it with what ever bike i end up with

If its a good deal and you like the 400 enough then go for it...
The 1100 would be a big step from the 250 sure, but just requires more respect. Wouldnt be "harder" to ride, but easier to get into trouble.

Oscar - If you do upgrade, then I really suggest you go to the 400 first... then later on go to a 1100.
That is my personal opinion re your riding experience.:scooter:

BTW if you take the packrack off the 250 I doubt that the "L" bits that fit onto the 250cc bike will fit the 400 let alone the 1100 as each bike is different.
The top part will fit any "L" brackets.

So if and when you upgrade, I am after the "L" brackets for my bike.
I already have the other top bit lying around in my garage.

I have seen the bike and it is in excellent condition...:scooter:

I would have thought about $4,000

But I guess its the age of it makes its value lower??????????

Go the 400, good choice to increase gradually. 1100 can come later, no hurry. I would say about $3000 should be max.

crashe .. if I ever get approval to upgrade, you can take the L brackets off my hands

$3500-$4000 for the 250. As for what to get next the 1100 isn't exactly a 100+hp sportsbike so I wouldnt be to scared of getting one and if you went for the 400 you would only lose money if you traded up again in the next few months.:scooter:

some people are saying upgrade gradually and others are saying go straight to the 1100, have you thought about a different style of bike? i.e. not a Virago? What about a 800cc Marauder or if you are lucky enough a Volusia?

If you are still looking we have a 1998 1100 Virago that has only done 15,000 kms. Would look at trading yours.

GO for the 400, you should get enough for your 250 to buy it and have change as the 250's are sought after and the 400 is a rare beast.

I don't think so. I traded my 1993 XV250 for $3000 last year, and it had 28,000kms on the clock.

If you've got a '99 with only 8000kms you could ask for $4500 or more as it looks to be in great condition and the 250 market is always inflated any way.

New XV250's retail for around $7000 anyway (well they did last time I looked).

As for a new bike, go for the 1100 if it's the model that takes your fancy. Sure it'll be a big step initially, but you'll grow into it and it'll last you. Whereas with a 400 you'll pretty soon find you've outgrown it.

I made the step up from my XV250 to a Vulcan 800 - which, incidently, smokes XV1100's ;-) - and had no problems...love her more each day :-)

I think everyone hs missed the point a bit here mate, the quicker you ditch the Virago idea the better, they are a terrible bike.

Clarkson ran one over with a dump truck, and altough he is not a bike person, even he knows they are bad.

Depends what sort of money you want to spend, but a early SV 650 is cheap as chips and almost a sports bike.

Waste of time and money buying the 400....

It will have roughly the same top speed...maybe less pull as i think the 400 have a 5spd box...And the 250 has 6spd..

But will be worth half the amount of your 250....

And three times harder to sell.....

Your bike Value for quicksale should be $3600ish....

Yes buy a Yamaha Xv1100....Great bike!!!!!!

But more practise on the 250 will help the move up....Check dry weights of both bikes...

I would have thought that any type of bike thats been run over with a dump truck would be pretty bad.

Heh just remember I was two up that day.

Go the 1100 mate, better styling than the 400 IMO but that's up to the user really. More power when you really need it and not all that hard to control. Easier to stay out of trouble than get into it.

Just mind the diesel on the roads....
