According to the news last night, the Nth Koreans hit the destruct button while the missle was still on its stage 1 burn. Something serious must have happened to its navigation system for that to happen. I could understand them destroying it after stage 1 and before stage 3 to check that the interstage timing is correct, but they would hardly destroy it shortly after launch unless they had lost control of where it was going.

Well I hear Helen Clark has condemmed them also... They must be really really afraid now, hell for all they know, NZ might supply video clips of helen clark to other international agencies to jam North Korean communications and broadcast helen clark's pictures on their TV sets in order to permeanently psychologically impair their population... After all, soldiers with mental illness wouldn't fight very well.....

2. If they are "testing" missles, which country were they aimed at?
Not aimed at a country. Usually aimed at an ocean or testing facility
3. If they are only "testing" the missles, whats the problem?
Missiles are never accurate and no one knows what they contain or type they are= Threat
4. Isn't this similar to the Iraq situation?
In a way yes, but in a way no too

Answers:
1. Because the Americans ... I mean UN told them not to.
2. It was aimed at pissing people off (not really a country as such but hey) oh and get it as far as they can get it so they can say loudly "hey see we can make thing go really really far....."
3. See question 1
4. Ummm... if it was like Iraq situation, americans will be invading North Korea right now... they're not. Also if they did invade North Korea, it would be a war for South Koreans not Americans... South Koreans have also been trying to "peacefully reunite" the Koean people for decades now so war just won't fly. (and south koreans yell really really loud.)
5. Because it makes them feel important. It's just like the local councils bark and moan all the time and deny people resource consents because it makes them feel all important.

Not really condisering China has the biggest Army in the world but....
The United States is widely regarded as the world's sole military superpower. But many experts expect China to challenge that status on the military front by early next century. Still Western analysts see little reason to fear from China's military:
Its 2.8 million-person army is the world's largest but is poorly trained and equipped.
Its 8,500 tanks are slow, small and out-of-date.
The 4,000 fighter planes in the Chinese air force are mostly from the 1960s and 1970s and lack modern avionics.
Its navy's 61 submarines and 54 surface ships are capable of little more than coastal patrols
But Pakistan is a friend Lou.....

Solution: Any country that wants to start a war with another country should get the leaders of those respective countries and put the two in a room together, no weapons just thier big dicks and after 24 hours open the room again... the surviving leader wins the war...
Outcome: No civilian deaths
no money wasted on weapons
no economic effects

and there is the crux of their issue - they have very little natural reserves of anything, they keep to themselves, yet they need to have access to said reserves, so they use intimidation, coersion or force to obtain them.
i see that Kim Jong-Il apparantley went on a train ride to Russia in the days before the 1st test (another is being mooted) - was that just in case the merkins took exception and carried out a pre-emptive strike? (not that they would though, as pre-emptive strikes are against UN protocol....)

Maybe, but the UN is funded by the likes of you and me. While the North Korean leadership are spending money on missiles, their people are starving to death. And who is helping them out? The UN, along with assorted aid agencies including considerable American support.

Nope. Its the Japanese, the Russians, the Phillipinos, the South Koreans, and the Taiwanese are afraid. Even the Chinese are nervous.
And the USA is friendly with most of those nations so it sticks up for them.
Think of it this way. A teenager lives down the street from you. Instead of working he's on a benefit and doing drugs - which your taxes pay for. He gets a shotgun off Trademe, and starts firing random shots into the street. He is paranoid and scared of the local street kids, and wants to show them he can defend himself - and that he is one tough dude.
You'd be fine with that?
We have a real double standard when arguing about the actions of nations. On the one hand the liberal view is not to actively interfere when people are being persecuted/killed etc. None of our business.
Yet on the other hand when twin babies are killed, we are up in arms. Why wasn't something done etc etc. Aren't murdered babies in Iraq/North Korea/Sudan just as important?

Nothing to really worry about if you ask me, apart from the fact that the US, in particular, is biting. Ignore this stupid regime and they'll fade back into obscurity up their own arse holes.
The biggest mistake the region and the wider world could make is to react in face of these dicks letting off a few fire-crackers IMO. It's simply a pathetic attempt to make the world believe that N.Korea is important on the world stage and are a force to reckoned with. Which is hilarious. In reality it's a failed society built upon fear, and run by a misfit. Oh, and they've got an unstable stock of alleged weapons grade nuclear material, but claim they're a nuclear weapon nation. Yeah right.
Most countries with any kind of military capability in the developed world (with the possible exception of NZ alone) could whoop their arses.
Idiots. But I don't believe even they would be stupid enough to undertake any aggresive military action against their neighbours. They know, deep down, that they're pathetic.

Sort of, to a degree. I subscribe to Jane's Defence Weekly amongst other things. And lets' just say that I work in the defence arena. So I like to think I at least know the basics. Thanks for asking.
Sure they have a huge force, in terms of manpower. Albeit their training is basic to say the least. Their equipment is low tier crap from China and a little from Iran, the rest has been developed at home.
They bought centrifuge (to make missile grade fuel) technology from Pakistan, and in return sold them what they know about rockets. Some how I'd imagine after this episdoe business will be slow.
The only real fear is that, as has already been stated, these prats will sell what little they do know do some fanatics, most likely a terrorist organisation as oppossed to any specific nation, who are barking enough to let off a dirty bomb or similar.
