I've been visiting a friend down in Hamilton and my bike's been blown over in the wind. Throttle casing is damaged and the starter switch no longer works. =(

I need to get back to Auckland tomorrow and I'd preferably like to do that by motorcycle. Is there anyone in Hams who can lend me a hand?

Just make sure stuff like brakes, clutch etc all work. Also check the contacts in the starter unit - it may have just come loose in the impact.

Found out what was wrong with it: Throttle was pushed in to the throttle casing, smashing most of the plastic inside. The big problems here are that the kill switch is broked, but that can be fixed by hotwiring the contacts. The starter unit isn't so bad, a bit of superglue can fix that up. After all, it only needs to be fired once. The throttle is the problem - part of the wheelybit that has the throttle cables is snapped, so the return cable won't fit in. Plus it seems jammed a bit, though I don't mind a bit of cruise control on the way to Auckland. Mostly I want to get this to Auckland, in any way possible.

So I'm looking for some way to transport the bike to Auckland, so I'll be looking for bike moving companies. Otherwise I'll be popping in to the local bike shops have casings that would work. Either way, I really do need to get back up to Auckland, and have my bike up there too.

Oh, and sorry for snapping at you earlier, Grem. As you can imagine, I'm not in the happiest of moods.

Throttle sleeves are pretty standard, any bike shop should eb able to help.

But does it need the retrun cable? Bikes never used to have them, and even on modern ones often there's enough spring action to pull the throttle back any, if you roll the twistgrip back.

Return cable was a yank "safety nazi" thing. "What happens if the throttle jams wide open. Think fo the children". Seen lots of bikes where it's been left off. Try and see I'd suggest.

Looks like I'm staying in Hamilton another night... haven't been able to get the grip fixed through the bike shops.

I've got a new twist grip from a FJ1200 from Bikes 'n' Bits, and will be using that for the throttle. With a couple of switches from Dick Smith and some wire, I'll be soldering up the starter motor and kill switch to work for the run back to Auckland. It will do the job, just as long as the throttle is good.
However, we have just found that we don't have a soldering iron. D'oh! But that is something for the morning. I think tonight just calls for beer and food. And more beer.

As ixion said, the return cable isn't a biggie. I was riding with a broken one for a while. I only found it was broken when I pulled everything apart to get less play in the throttle.

It just means the when you return it, if you push it, it will go round even further.

Thanks to everyone for their offers of help, and to Titanium for lending me his soldering iron. I've made it back up to Auckland without incident and my sickly bike will be getting a well deserved repair.
