Hutt Citty Council Rider Training Day

Was great fun and Stew from TSS outdid himself with his excellent support at some not insignificant financial cost to his business.

It was great to brush up on the old riding around cones stuff, just in case I ever bump into some cones on the road :).

The formation riding on the Police College parade ground was a hoot.

Even if you are a superbly talented rider, free opportunities like this don't come up very often. The ACC, LTSA, Police, and the Hutt City Council all put a huge effort into doing this, but the biggest disappointment was the almost complete lack of L platers with the notable exception of the Chap who no-faulted on the handlings skills course to win the top prize.

You young fellas and fellesses may all THINK you're immortal, but we can all learn something, and turning down a free training day like this is definitely a lost opportunity.

Full marks to Local and Central Government for actually doing something like this to help us.

We saw the group at the carpark, a really good turnout.

Mrs Airplane did the course (black SV650), so Mr Airplane may post her thoughts? (we spoke with her afterwards and apart from dropping her bike in the cones it was all basically positive).

Yep, real good initiative and thanks to all who had a hand in making it happen.

Sorry, but I wasn't going to turn down the first opportunity I've had in two months to see my kids for a training day.

SOME things are more important than bikes. :)

I was all signed up to go on the course b/c it sounded great but I ended up being away in ChCh.

Do you know if they are planning another one any time soon?

That was a "testing of the waters" as they say. I think that all the parties involved are keen to repeat it regularly, but they will want to review the feedback and redesign the course.

I'm astounded at the level of support shown by Stephen's Driving/Riding school, Hutt City Council, Ulysses, LTSA, ACC, and the Police. In a largely user pays environment it is unusual for a course like this to be utterly free. But then avoiding one injury accident more than pays for the course, financially and for the person who missed out on getting hurt.

Actually Jim, I just remembered now, when I first phoned Barbara about doing the course and told her I was an L plate rider she said it was a course designed for more expereinced riders, which surprised me.

Well I can state with "authority" that I would've rated it as a basic course, and so would a bunch of my old bike course instructor buddies that were there.

I was also told it was not really for L platers. I hope they have another one, and make it for those of us who could do with a bit of practice!

Spent the day in the Landrover instead, climbing up some hills around Pencarrow/Orongoronoas and getting stuck in the mud. Great fun.

I had originally planned to be at the ride day at Manfield. When that was cancelled I didn't realise the training day was on or I may well have turned up. So I'm a definite starter should they decide to run another one.

It'd be an accident if I pulled a mono on that thing. Though I do have Jimbo beasting me to get my knee down :whistle:

Well we did the course and would agree with Jim it was definitely basic, the more experienced got in a bit of practice at going slow. Very good for the learners hopefully they will hold another one for the experienced riders.

The slow race we had at the end of the day was a laugh to fill in time ( good practice for the next rally), the braking bit at the end of the skills session upended a few in the first group.
The guy taking it was not interested in a different view on things as voiced by a few, it was textbook stuff only.

The guy on the VN1500 was a legend got around all the cones and had a ball.

If they hold another course we will probably go again :scooter:
