I'm trying to get started in racing and have found a bike to race but it's still in road trim. I need some race fairings and maybe some tyres too. I'm also looking for some second hand racing leathers in a small size. If anyone can give me any tips on what else I may need to get the ball rolling, I'd be really greatful.

Yours is the last of the H model right? The one with the square tail section and seperate front lights? Just fairings do race kits for them if I am not mistaken. It depends on how much you want to spend, but you could get away with just a race top fairing, removing the sides and the tail fairings. It wil mean that if you do have an incident, there is less to repair. It might look just a touch rugged, but racing is about how well you ride not how good you look. Fibreglass is better than plastic for racing as it is a bit easier to repair well once you know how.

I also suggest doing a bit of basic weight reduction on the bike - there is a lot of extraneous plastic under the seat - if it is similar to the L, the rear half of the subframe and associated plastic should unbolt easily. If you are looking to use it as only a race bike from now on, then there is a lot you can do to make it lighter. I take it you are aware you need to lockwire the sump/filter/install a fluids catch tank and so on?

I could sell you a supercorsa SC1 rear if you are interested, and I have some L model tail fairings if you can make them fit on your bike.

Cheers Milky, The bike belongs to a good mate & he wants to use it for road as well so I need to be able to put it back in road trim. I dont care what it looks like and I'm not rich so the top fairing as you suggest might be the go. I am aware of all the lockwiring etc. to do(thanks to frosty's sticky) and have plenty of time to get it done as I plan to start racing in spring/summer.

How much do you want for the supercorsa? I'd prefer second hand everything as Im on a tight budget.

I might have just found myself a set of leathers...will try them on for size tomorrow.

Another stoopid question.... where can I buy a smaller back protector? The smallest one I found on tardme is 53cm which would be too big.

Edit: Ok I just spoke to the owner and looked over the bike. It has a square tail end with twin tail lights and the headlights are separate. He's happy for me to buy & fit some race fairings and keep it in race trim as long as he gets to have a play on it at track days:D so now looking at the(bike)weight loss program. We think it would be best to set it up for my weight as he is twice my weight:yes: So all I need now is the fairings and tyres for the bike & licence, leathers, boots & back protector for me.

Hi Goblin,

Good on you for giving it a go. I am in the same boat - hoping to have a go at F3 and clubmans this year.

As another KB'er adviced thus far is go out there and just get some fairings. then read the Motorcycling NZ - MNZ rule book (www.mnz.co.nz) as to what you need to do to prep your bike to get through scrutineering (i.e. catch bottles, lock wiring, race coolant etc) then join your local Auck motorcycle club and apply for a a MNZ licence.

Your local Auckland club is very strong and if you mention at one of the club nights that you are planning to have a go on the race track and need some advice, you will be surprised as to how many people will be willing to have a chat or even pitch in.

As to how far to go to increase in power and decrease the wieght of a ZXR - the sky is the limit. There are some very talented people on KB that have done talented things with their ZXR's to make them go like stink. Some have done this on a pretty sharp budget.

So its possible - go for it

Feral

Edit: Sorry Goblin - thought you where based in Auckl but then saw you where in the BOP. Therefor the Auckland M/C club might not be of to much help.....

Hey Kelly, if you need a pit bitch who knows what he's doing, I can be your man. I can talk you through your riding etc on the day or prior to the race if I come across you on a track day or something. Beside that, you can borrow my old leathers until you get your own. They are plain white with bits of blue and not that good looking but they do the trick. I've tested it a few times.

I don't hang out on the site much so PM me or just get my number off Gav if you need it.

Good on you btw! Always happy to see more people getting into the sport! :)

Thanks Sudeep...might keep you up on that. I will be trying some leathers on tomorrow & Im pretty sure they will fit me as the guy is roughly the same size as me. Thanks for the offer tho. Will be good to see you out there too.

Cheers feral1 Good on you too...hope you get as much fun out of it as I plan to:yes: I have all the guff I need for VMCC so no worries there. I have the basic bike so I just have to get by on advice & maybe a little help from the good people here. I've read the threads on what a couple of very talented guys have done with their green machines. Now if only I had the mechanical knowlege to know wtf it all means:scratch: Yup...the sky is the limit.

Ok I havn't found any fairings I can afford....just fairings in Hams is just a little too expensive for me atm. Does anyone have molds I could perhaps borrow, in exchange for beer?? So I can make my own.
