One year ago today and only a matter of minutes ago to the hour.
The Flying Kiwi set it's record
I was lucky enough to be there to see it all happen  :first:

as T.W.R's sig says
THE ONLY STUPID QUESTION IS THE QUESTION NOT ASKED
so i thought i would test the theory

Ha true but to not have known the answer raises some questions in it's self :nya:
It should set records of a different nature now that the bloke in the states has it, as he's a double amputee. Best of luck to him in his venture
Still a shame that Garrett & Hayward used the lesser road here  probably cost them an easy 10-15kmh on their speed

What cost them was no canopy screwing the aerodynamics and not enough run up, the fastest run on the day Glen didn't even hit top gear
Phil might get to have a run in it at Bonnieville
shame I missed that last year, it would have been a great way to pass a birthday :-)

Why no canopy?

Why no canopy?
From memory he couldnt fit into it with the canopy on.

The aerodynamics were hindered by not having the canopy on but they'd played around with the design of the that prior to making the runs anyhow & the decision was made to run without it.
They had way more than enough run up, their start point was 3km out of Chertsey on Chertsey Kyle Rd which is over 30km long with one bend in it halfway.
The biggest thing that screwed them for outright speed was the road surface (mainly bluegum roots that have rippled the road) Phil had organised with Fulton Hogan to repair patches prior to the run but this was only completed a couple of days before & hadn't even had time to bed-down.
Your more than welcome to come down & have a blast down the road & scare yourself silly when you hit some of these ripples

They'd played around with bugger all,Phil hadn't even riddien it and they didn't even do a test run until just over a week out from the event and the first one was done with no body work at all, when the bodywork finally turned up it didn't fit and that cost them more time when they were already running late in their build
They found out less than a week before they were due to run the company building the canopy couldn't do it how they wanted and visibility was to restricted so they had no choice but to run with out it and that created some aerodynamic instability
They had way more than enough run up, their start point was 3km out of Chertsey on Chertsey Kyle Rd which is over 30km long with one bend in it halfway.
Not according to both Phil and Glen, they both said they were still accelerating through the speedtrap instead of being peaked in top when they hit the first beacon and thats why Glen said he didn't even get into top on the last run (which was the fastest)
Glen was keen to do more runs, different gearing, make canopy fit etc,as they had road closures for the week but Phil pulled the plug because they aready had the record

Dude I was there, I saw what happened, I heard both Phil & Glen's 1st statements on what they did & how they did it, during the runs.
I even spoke to Phil by phone days prior to the event about the condition of the road.
And it was the weather as the main factor behind Phil pulling the plug, not just that they'd topped the existing record on both their attempts.
