Brilliant news!
A mass murderer gets what was long overdue.
The school siege at Beslan will never be forgotten in Russia, and for good reason.
More cowards hiding behind children.

Rebel leader behind Beslan school massacre killed
7.10am Tuesday July 11, 2006
MOSCOW - Chechen rebel leader Shamil Basayev, who had claimed responsibility for the bloody 2004 Beslan school siege and was Russia's most wanted man, has been killed.
FSB security agency chief Nikolai Patrushev said Basayev had been about to mount an attack in southern Russia to mar the weekend G8 summit Russian President Vladimir Putin will chair in St Petersburg.
Putin, whose already huge popularity at home will be further boosted by the news as he prepares to meet US President George W Bush and other world leaders, said Basayev's death was "deserved retribution" for a campaign of killing.
More than 331 people, half of them children, were killed in the Beslan school siege in September 2004. Russian forces stormed the school, which had been seized by Islamist militants linked to Chechnya's fight for independence.
"This is deserved retribution against the bandits for our children in Beslan ... for all these acts of terror they committed in Moscow and other Russian regions," Putin said in televised comments.
Patrushev said Basayev, along with other Chechen fighters, was killed in an operation by special forces in Ingushetia, a region neighbouring Chechnya.
"They intended to use this terrorist act to put pressure on Russia's leadership at a time when the G8 summit was being held," said Patrushev.
Officials said Basayev was killed when his group's explosive-laden truck blew up. They said they found fragments of Basayev's prosthetic leg and his head, with its distinctive beard.
But it was not entirely clear what role Russian forces played in killing Basayev. A fellow rebel said the blast was an accident.
Russian state TV said Basayev's men were loading the truck with explosives in the village of Ekazhevo when it blew up.
It said local people heard the blast as they watched the climax of the soccer World Cup final early on Monday Moscow time. Basayev was sitting in a car near the truck.
"There was an enormous explosion. All those who were in a radius of the blast were blown to pieces," Beslan Khamkhoyev of Ingushetia's interior ministry was quoted as saying by Interfax news agency.
"In the morgue there are four bodies of fighters. We calculate that the number of fighters eliminated is 10," Khamkhoyev said.
Chechen rebel envoy Akhmed Zakayev told Ekho Moskvy radio he doubted the official version. "I think this was a fatal accident," he said by telephone from London.
Basayev, born in 1965, professed to be a devout Muslim. He had links to Islamist militants in other countries. His left foot was blown off by a mine in 2000 and he wore a false one.
In a television interview aired last year, he justified the attack on Beslan by saying Russian civilians, including children, were legitimate targets in his homeland's fight for independence from Moscow.
"We are at war. Russians ... pay their taxes for this war, send their soldiers to this war, their priests sprinkle holy water on the soldiers," said Basayev.
"How can they be innocent? Russians are accomplices in this war," he said in the interview with Britain's Channel 4.

I watched a doco on Sky the other day about the Beslan siege. It was very hard to sit through. I completely fail to see how anyone can do things like this to children, no matter what their political or religious agendas are.

Yep, the lowlife is just as bad as Stalins troops who forced innocent Chechens into the wilds of Siberia after WW2, causing the deaths of tens of thousands.
It seems that the whole population had to pay for the few that collaborated with the Nazis.
It seems that everywhere you look there's another genocidal bastard.
Where do they all come from?

Bit like the ones the Russians have killed by bombing schools in Chechnya then? By leveling whole cities?
There's always two sides.

Yes, but in this brave new world, you have to find the other side for yourself. The propanganda organs masquerading as free press won't tell you.

The bomb he set went off too soon
And now his story ceases.
The bits they found, they buried here -
And thus, he rests in pieces.
Good fucking job. "Poetic justice" rocks! More cowards should blow themselves up with their own bombs prematurely. If they must "Die for their cause", the least they could do is do it in the privacy of their own territories and leave innocent people out of it.

Yes or the fact that Russia has eliminated over 20% of the population of Chechnya don't seem to get mentioned either.
And you wonder why people flip out some time eh..

Almost invariably, when you have terrorists, you have a reason. Except perhaps for the middle class sympathisers in the 70's like Bader-Meinhof, Red Brigades etc. Bored, disillusioned ex-hippies.

At the moment it would be difficult to do anything with Vladimirs popularity.
People have been lining up to get a tatoo of him because he is so popular!
I would love to see a labour supporter with a tatoo of heilen.......

Followed this war in the early stages. The Russians are no saints in this respect. The Chechins just did not have the savy to broadcast to the world some of thje atrocities that they carried out on civilians. Still two wroangs do make make it right. The Chechans lost any international support that may have got from this one single act of terror.

It could well be argued that the lack of international support is what makes them resort to terror.

This is only ONE event in 500 years of White Russians attempting to wipe Chechens from the face of the Earth. I am perturbed by the attitude that says that one thing that happened during my time on Earth makes a whole race "bad".
The Chechnyan people did have the savvy to to broadcast their plight to the world. They had a brief period of satellite communications at the opening of the current hostilities and "we" ignored them. Then the Russians destroyed their power and communications infrastructure and "cleared" the countryside from the western border to Grozny.
Here's a Russian sponsored viewpoint of the current "troubles":
http://academickids.com/encyclopedia/c/ch/chechnya.html
Here's a very different view from the Catholic Church:
http://www.cafod.org.uk/where_we_work/eastern_europe/chechnya
Here's a liberal "Open Source" view:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Chechnya
The majority of Chechen citizens are re-patriated Russians, hence the myth propagated that most Chechens want Russian Federal rule. The ethnic Chechen population was forcibly repatriated to Kazahkstan, so that they couldn't revolt during the Soviet era. This is as bad as anything that has happened in East Timor in the last 40 years except it's been going on a lot longer.
It's politically expedient to brand them terrorists though, just to keep the Russian economy onside with the "free" world. Internally from a Russian perspective, it's all about oil.

Or the powers that be (the Murdochs and media barons of this world) wouldnt report it very widely - after all - they're just muslim peasants from some part of the world no one in the west much knows of,fighting the might of another large power!
The Beslan incident was a tragedy, but the Russian authorities weren't lily white there as well.
In conflicts like these, there are no heroes, there is no such thing as a "clean" fight - both sides fight to the dirtiest of their abilities and sensibilities , particularly of people in the West, are sorely affronted.
But, as far as people like this are concerned, it is a bitter struggle to the death and the ends justify the means - we may think its sick and depraved, but thats the way it is, and, really, always has been. Its conflict in all its dirt, horror and filth, laid bare. Women? Children? how about all their women and children that have been slaughtered?
I sure don't approve of what was done, but people should actually take a CLOSE look at what is going on before frothing of at the mouth - here and elsewhere in the world.

I watched the news on this guys death. They showed clips from various atrocities that the Chechens had committed. The hospital seige in Moscow, the theatre seige there also and the Beslin attack.
But not a word on the fact that most of the deaths were caused by Russian Special forces in the first two (they pumped sedative gas into the theatre which killed most of the hostages), and that armed civilians started the firefight that ended the Beslan seige in such tragedy.
There's another Chechen leader planning a reprisal right now, you can't kill the hydra by chopping of one head.

I'm somewhat surprised that Russia hasnt accidently detonated a few large nukes down in its southern republics.. Would make life a lot easier for the non muslim russians if they just made a nice radioactive wasteland across the southern border :-)

It pissed the neighbours off a bit.
Why not give the Chechens their stolen land back?
Our Governments could show them how.
