View Full Version : The dogs' Hornet mods

One thing I love about these forums is seeing what other people have done to their bikes, it inspires me to do new things to mine.
The Hornet is a very 'mod-able' bike, so over the last 7 months I have had a good time not only riding it but personalising it.
If you are into this sort of thing or have a Hornet, read on. If not......
Exhaust:
Changing these was not in the plans until we heard Skelstars ‘baffelectomied’ exhausts, they sounded much better than the whisper quiet sound the hornet is know for. As I am not mechanically minded thought I would pop in Cycleworks for an opinion, 2 weeks later and both bikes sport some damn nice looking pipes that sound fantastic (compared to the originals at least). Bike seems to rev a lot more freely now as well. Good guys at Cycleworks
Wheels:
These were red when I got the bike. I was going to have them painted when I was buying it but the paint shop was closed for the xmas holidays. Now I like them red, makes the bike pretty unique.
Handle bars:
Replaced with Renthal low bars. Was looking for more width, a bit lower and to remove the vibes at 5000 rpm. Got two of the three, but these bars feel no lower than stock.
Mirrors:
Replaced with Rizoma Impulsive mirrors. Not cheap, but damn these are good mirrors. Almost limitless adjustability and a great view behind. They also look damn good on the bike I reckon.
Indicators:
Replaced the large Honda stock indicators with Oxfords front and rear. The rears are a pretty decent size and flash at the normal speed. The front ones are the ‘micros’, they look good but I think they are a bit small and result in a very fast flash rate.
Screen:
The bike came with the standard Honda screen, which is a smokey brown colour (why Honda??) A few coats of mat black on the inside and it came up nicely.
Engine nuts:
Painted black (inspired by et al)
Radiator:
Car grill added to the front (chopped to size and attached with plastic ties) Purchased red grill from super cheap autos (inspired by Dr Hook) but the red was not the right red and looked a little funny, so painted it black.
Painted the side silver covers black.
Grab rail:
Remove this and covered the holes with Rizoma hole caps. Makes the rear end look a lot more stream lined.
Side triangle covers:
Not sure what these are for, but I like the look without them.
Rear guard:
Chopped this right down to the indicator mounts, re drilled a new licence plate and mounted as high up as possible. Only down side to this is the rear gets pretty dirty when riding on wet roads.
Rego and Warrant:
These were mounted on the rear guard. As I chopped this down I needed to move them somewhere. So mounted the reg to the side of the hugger and the warrant to the inside of the rear foot peg.
Rear foot pegs:
While mounting the warrant found the foot guard was getting in the way so removed it. Looks a little tidier without it.
Flapper mod:
Blocked the air intake pipe thingy. This is the first mod I did based on a lot of people on various forums saying they did this and the bike sounded and felt better. To be honest didn’t really notice the difference.
Side plastic covers:
The colour of these was a little dark for the bike. When Mrs KD got her bike the colour of hers was a little light. Quick swap and problem solved.
Honda stickers:
My bike had ‘CB900 Hornet’ as a sticker on the side plastic covers, the other bike did not have these. After the swap there was nothing on the bike to say what it was. Went to Blue cat graphics and they made some for me.
Crash knobs:
Some oggy crash knobs fitted for those unfortunate moments. Proved there worth during a ‘lovingly place the bike on the ground’ incident.
Horn:
Swung in towards the middle of the bike so it is not sticking out so much.
Tyre pressure and chain sticker:
Removed these from the swing arm and chain guard.

Has almost all the above done as well as the following.
Seat:
The problem with this bike is it is a little too high for Mrs KD. Reducing the seat height was the first step in correcting this. Sent the stock seat off to Macdonald trimmers in Tauranga (Rider seats). The result was a fantastic looking and very comfortable seat, especially compared to the firm stock seat. The height had dropped a little but still need to go down more, so onto the next mod.
Thank Groins NZ for the lend of your seat while ours was away.
Suspension:
A lot of people talked about lowering the bike by adjusting the rear shock. Unfortunately the rear of the Hornet was not set up for this, with the only option being chopping the stock shock down, which could impact on performance and ride comfort (which was already very firm and bouncy)
After hours on various forums looking at other options discovered Ohlins make a couple of shocks for the hornet that lower the bike. Got in touch with Robert Taylor at Hawera Motorcycles who imported and installed the shock for us. Not only is the bike lower now but the ride has improved as well.

Well done Mr & Mrs KD - have you run out of "mod" ideas yet?
I have made a few discrete $0 mods to mine lately (lets just say some tape and ice cream containers and leave it at that!). My Hornet is beginning to look like a tarts handbag, and a cheap one at that!

yesterday wasnt a bad day, so I took the Hornet for a spin. after reading a thread on KB about tyre pressures, I decided to experiment a bit.
I dropped my front to 32, and rear to 36 (from the manual recommendation of 36f and 42r).
what a difference! Im still going to upgrade the shock, its oversprung, but the front end feel was much better the suspension felt a LOT better. more compliant and less skittish, and less jolts right up the spine.
Cheers KB'ers that was excellent!
Yesterday was only a pootle, I think if I was pressing on I would have to up the pressures, but to nowhere near the recommendations. I think they are recommended for a 150kg rider riding at 150kph for hours on end!
Kendog

Its funny you should mention reducing tyre pressure.
Just yesterday our wise mentor said the same thing, was going to try this next weekend as well.

If I run out of ideas that may the time to change bikes.
Still plenty of things I would love to do:
Replace the pegs
Paint the headers black
Replace the levers
Lower bars
Briaded brake lones
Replace the hugger
New seat

Hello guys...
Sorry to 'butt in' your discussion.
I really like hornets and I'm seriously considering one for a next bike (when i get my full), as alternative to SV650 or SV1000...
can you guys who own hornets answer the following to me (excuse my noobness):
1. what is the fuel economy/consumption of these machines ?
2. are there any storage compartments in the bike (very important)
3. at high speed cruise (100-110kph) it it nice and comfortable ? does it still have grunt for a quick acceleration or does it kinda feel like it doesnt really wanna do it ?
4. is the front and rear suspension adjustable ?
Thanks in advance !
skelstar
6th September 2006, 17:14
1. About 230kms on a tank before hitting reserve (96).
2. Not a hell of a lot under the seat. Its a one peice, but because of the exhaust system its kinda restrictive.
3. F*ck yeah!!! Its as torquey as anything so you can accelerate without worrying about what gear youre in.
4. Rear only until about '04. '05 is both front and back (2way I think).
Kendog
6th September 2006, 19:26
I'll second all of that and add that you can get a new shock installed which helps with handling and adjustability, hubby dearest rides mine with an Ohlins shock in it and always comments that they feel like completely different bikes (ie. mine is crap loads more comfortable, stable and just generally cooler than his!!) Haha

Easy to do yourself, had previously removed the locating pins in the controls for some Renthal drag style bars that turned into a pain in the arse due to throttle stick http://www.kiwibiker.co.nz/forums/images/smilies/surprise.gif
:gob:, tank clearance and control location issues, in comparison the Rizomas bolted straight up, don't hit the tank and are about 1-2" lower.
Give it a go, as long as you take care it's not a major.

The bikes look hot, like the look of the red wheels. Was going to mention the front lights but thought it might sound like critisicm, now that you are onto that line of thought I think a more sporty light would make them look real trick.

Gives new meaning to the term "slow boat from....."
I am not very competent with stuff like this so will have the bike shop swap them over. My bars are going on Mrs KD's bike and new ones onto mine.

Not quite Hornet related but got a set of the Renthal street Ultra-lows from a mate last week. They have the same bend as the stock Z1000 bars but are about an inch lower. They are also about an inch wider in total than the Z's standard bars. I think they're about 725mm.
Initial riding experience, I lean a bit more forward and it seemed the wind wasn't as much of an issue, compared to stock... I didn't notice the extra width when under way but I've only done one short ride. If anything, all I noticed was the angle at which the bars were, just since it fealt different. I've rotated them back a bit but haven't been out again...
The drilling of the holes for the switch gear was easy, though I got my measurements a few mm off on the throttle side. I also had to get a set of Zeta bar-end inserts, to which I mounted the standard Z weights...

Hi rdrzcbr, cheers for the feedback, I don't think I will drill the bars because this is what it states on the Renthal site:
Fitting Notes
It is very important when fitting the handlebars that any sharp edges are removed from the handlebar mounts where they come in contact with the handlebar (see illustration 1). Failure to remove these sharp edges could lead to a fatigue failure.
To make sure that the handlebar is aligned centrally use the laser marked positioning grid for centre and rotational location (see illustration 3). The positioning grid also allows you to replace the handlebars in exactly the same position should you need to remove the handlebar from the bike for any reason.
IMPORTANT WARNINGS
Do not modify the handlebars.
Do not centre punch or in any way mark the handlebar. Physical marking of the handlebar can lead to stress raisers.
Do not clean the handlebar with any form of metal polish or concentrated cleaning fluids.
The use of these products could damage the anodised finish of the handlebars. Note that now even Silver 7/8" handlebars are anodised. Please keep us posted though!!!
Here are the installation instructions step by step.

Personally I am not a fan of drilling. Cheers mate, I would have to agree, I aint going to take the risk of drilling them!!!

Mrs KD.
I think Ive said before that the Ohlins shock in mine (with new fork springs as well) is the single best improvement I have ever made to any bike. And I only got the "cheap"* Ohlins shock.

There are no quite as wide as the last ones so sometimes find my grip is in the wrong place. But it feels like the right width and has got me more on a forward lean which takes some pressure of the lower back when hitting bumps.
The leavers are Pazzos. Really sweet, comfortable and adjustable. Look nice as well.

I am quite partial to the integrated tail light/ indicators, The left and right hand side halves of the brake light have orange LEDs amongst the red brake LEDs and the entire half flashes when either indicator is on. Thus you have no need to have separate indicators at all, cleans up the rear very nicely. Now to just find out if they are 'E' stamped and legal....

Great thread, makes good reading. I've got a bit of a soft spot for Hornets and will no doubt be considering one somewhere down the line. Beaut machines, the Kendogs :)
Just one question though - has lowering Mrs. KD's machine (how much by total?) affected the ground clearnace much? Still able to biff it into corners without grinding the pegs too early? Reason I ask is despite not being a short guy (I'm 5'10"ish) I like having a slightly lower bum position as it's more comfortable when stopped at lights etc and would consider lowering mine a smidge. Opinion? Cheers guys! Keep up the good work. :sunny:

Thanks DE.
My bike has probably been lowered by about 2inchs (at a guess) by the shock and the seat being done. So far (touch wood) I haven't had any ground clearance issues, although I have had to have the side stand hacked twice as the lean was not enough to be able to park it on a slight righthand slope.
As for grinding pegs, I'm not that good of a rider (yet), but hopefully it won't be too much of an issue. The Ohlins shock and the lowering of the front through the forks has made the bike more "biffable" into corners, I believe it corners faster, ie. dives into corners faster than before, and has made the overall handling better and the ride smoother.
Hope this helps!!

Lowering the bike does not really effect the pegs grinding, at most road speeds, you would notice the difference at track, but at 5'10 you should have really any need to lower a bike i would think, take a touch out of the seat, and you be fine. with out even worrying about the shock.

Thanks Cajun.
Yeah, I know I wouldn't really need to lower a bike at my height. I'm not really short, more in the average range. It's kind of a taste thing for me I suppose. I just feel more comfortable a smidgin closer to the ground for low speed stuff and ducking into corners. And I've gotta confess, I like the hunkered look of Mrs Kendog's machine - I'd hit that.
Reason I was asking about ground clearance issues is because while my current bike - the NZ250 - has quite a low seat, lower than other 250s it's been lined up next to, the pegs are quite high. But I still ground my boots frequently enough when tilted over on it, so I thought I'd ask the question for future reference. And the Hornet would have much better tyres than my humble NZ... :innocent:
I'd probably change the rear shock anyway, just to improve the handling a bit as Mrs KD says (good description of the effects, thanks), but whether or not I'd lower it a little at the same time is what I'm trying to get a feel for. This is the perfect thread for that. :) *Subscribes*

A lot of people recommend simply lowering the front slightly through the forks for improved cornering, cheaper than the whole shock replace too.

That is the Ultra low bar and it comes highly recommend on the US and UK Hornet forums.
I have just swapped to this bar and love it. If you are changing from stock you will notice the following:
Wider grip position
More lean forward in your riding position (the bar is much flatter)
Vibes almost gone completely.

I always found my hands unconsciously moving wider on the stock bars, to the point where I was having problems with the accelerator. To me the stock bars are just too narrow.
With wider bars you should notice more leverage steering wise e.g. for counter steering. I think it is a more natural riding position as well.

Ive posted elsewhere that i think the upgrade shock and fork option is THE best money you can spend on these bikes, yay for Ohlins....
Ive never needed more ground clearance on the road, but in one day on the track I disappeared both hero knobs and into the footpeg itself on the left. and thats with some knee down action as well. the footpegs are low on these bikes and lets face it they arent full on scratchers.... just great all round bikes.
I personally think it would be a bad idea for a spirited rider to lower this bike unless you really had to.

I am around your hight and find that I pretty much have foot flat on the ground most times. And I have also put in an ohlins shock and suprisingly the front forks are quite good, so they are working well together on the bike. Also having the rear higher or the front lowered will make it corner faster.

how do I remove bar ends?
There's a screw in the end, but the bar end moves about 12mm without touching the screw.
I gave the screw a fair yank last night, and it wouldn't move
am I perhaps just a poor little white office worker with no strength? or am I missing something?

Since Paul hasnt asked... Did you need any bar-end weights.
Do the mirrors suffer any undue blurriness at any revs ?

Hey guys, just to get off the handlebar topic for a moment....
I know there are tons of tyre threads around but would like some "Hornet specific" tyre advice. I have had Pirelli Diablo Strada tyres on my 'net and they have lasted me 8000km. I was hoping to get a set of the new Mitchelin Pilot Road 2 (http://www.michelin.co.uk/uk/front/affich.jsp?codeRubrique=66) but they are only comming into the country next month and I don't know if I can wait that long.
I do about 400km of commuting (come rain or shine) a week and "spirited" riding on the weekends.
What tyres, have you found, are the best on your Hornets? (Please include what kind of mileage you get out of them as well)
TerminalAddict

I've done 8000 in metzeler M3 .. and will probably get another 1000 from the back (hopefully)
I will be replacing it with the same tyre .. its great .. altho' I've heard not as good as strada in the wet

weekend long tours with the missus on back every 2 months. (roughly)
2 rides every week (which always turn out to be "spirited")
the mid week rides is normally about 100-130kms long
the weekend ride often develops into a 500 kms all day ride (much to the disapproval of the wife :D ) .. but not always
the occassional commute (but tyres cost too much to go to work and back again :) )
the edge of the rear tyre has been found more than once ;)
Occassionally "back in" to a corner .. which is hard on rear tyres
so mostly "spirited" riding

As an acomplas to TA's "spirited" rides. I am on the Diablo Strada's and was amazed at their lack of wear during our SI adventure. That was 2 up + pack and 4500k's. What amazed me was the lack of wear. The riding was sidate and over christmas/new year weather was coolish, but comparing the front before and after, it was if I had done a ride around the block.
Now was it the dual compound Strada or was it the cooler weather.. Mm Probably the later but I'll prob keep with them when it comes time to change

100km commute each week.
Bit of a blat in the weekends and the odd trip round the North Island.
Bridgestone BT20's 12,000km on the back. But probably should have been replaced about 1000km earlier :nono:
Swapped front and back to Road attacks. These feel good and have done about 5,000km so far. Wear looks pretty good.
The replacement for the BT20's, the BT21 sound like a good type and will probably be what I go to next.

1. What sort of "go" do these things have how torquey and powerfull ?

3. Could i use one for a track day ( a little supermoto ) with a few of modifications to make it moto friendly.
4. Most importantly i suposse would you suggest/reccomend the hornet to me (6ft 85 kg).

Are you still using the standard bulb in your headlight? I bought a Hella Xenon H4 headlight bulb (Phillips stamped on the metal part of the bulb) which has got the blue tint on the top of the bulb. I am amazed by the difference. The say you get about 50% more light out of it and I am over the moon, it has made such an improvement to night riding. I highly recommend to all Hornet riders!!!!!! :Punk:

wow interesting lights TerminalAddict. I was going to do the exact same thing just before entering the grand challange on my Hornet. But I put in some Hella Xeon +50 as well and it made the main light good enough, so I didn't followup with the extra light upgrade.
Replacing the standard bulb with the +50 make a heck of a lot different.

Your local auto electrical shop should be able to help, they are the Hella / Philips bulbs. Do NOT buy the Nevia ones.

If you got the Oxfords, there is an adapter set you can buy as well that makes them line up with the stock holes.
To remove the front ones you need to get in the back. Not much room there but its a little easier when the headlight is removed.

I know exactly what you mean though - I have my moments when I feel like one as well... just feel bloated and horrible. Not that I'm saying you need to lose weight (that's me), just that I'm sure you look just fine. :sunny:
This thread's been really good reading for me over the weeks... it's been in my subscribed threads list for ages and will provide a good reference for me to come back to when I'm considering fettling. Always had a bit of soft spot for the Hornet 900 - but then, I like Hondas generally anyway. Still, I might not get one for some time yet, it probably won't be my "first big bike," but you never know. But anyway, some mods listed on here will work just nicely with other bikes too, so it's still been a good reference!

Yeah, I'm not afraid of the "step up" as such... more that I'm limiting myself financially as to how much I spend on my "first big bike". If we're talking numbers, purely money wise I have enough to go down to the shop and buy myself a 2007 CBR600RR (and god knows I'd love one), but it's not really a viable option. A bike that good would be wasted on me I think, a nice CBR600F3 would most likely do fine. But I still worry that I'd drop it at low speed or at a standstill... and a bike with fairings doesn't like that! I'm used to my NZ with a very low seat height, and weighs so little that it threatens to be blown away on a windy day when parked up somewhere! So yeah, I need to consider what to get next. Thinking of spending up to about $6000 in cash. Would love an NC30, I think they look great and have heard they go great.... but have also heard they cost to keep maintained. Maybe not so good. Sigh. Still... time to test ride everything I can get my paws on? Hope so!

There aren't many things wrong with them really, bloody awesome machines. I'd love to have a ride on one but even if someone let me I'd probably decline for fear of injuring their baby. Not that I can't afford to fix it, but it's the principal. It's someone's baby, a brand new bike, unsullied... just not worth the risk! Crash bungs are a good investment on any bike IMO. I've never crashed, but have put the bike down on the driveway before. Lucky I only have a semi faired bike or I'd have been grizzling!
He'll love the K7 long time. Just remember the paint is a bit of a weak point on them - it can peel / wear easily. Just as bad here in the UK were Suzuki has a bit of a rep for average build quality. Still, hell of a motor, hell of a good handling bike too. I've been on a K6 (admittedly only on the pillion pew), and it always felt planted. Noice.

I know what you mean! Nigel asked LBTW if he'd let me take his one for a ride, but I just didn't feel comfortable riding someone elses baby, there are very few people I'd let ride mine, so yeah! Still... time to test ride everything I can get my paws on? Hope so!The cost of maintenance is only because it is old. It, and the NC35, are reliable bikes. I had 1 problem (That's 1) with my NC35, and it was related to age, not bad design. I've had a couple of problems with the GSXR related to the electrics. An NC30 or NC35 makes a great second bike if you want a racey bike. I got an NC35 as my second bike and I cannot stand to sell it because it is so good.

Hey Kendog - on your Hornet mods you said:
"Grab rail: Remove this and covered the holes with Rizoma hole caps. Makes the rear end look a lot more stream lined."
I agree, and want to do the same - where'd you get them from?
Many thanks.

At a guess I would say www.rizoma.it ...

That is the Rizoma site, but they don't sell retail.
I got them from PJ Parts (http://www.pjsparts.com/). They are excellent people to deal with, no problems with payments and deliveries.

Went for my final ride today on the red wheeled girl :bye:
Took it out to Otaki to her new owner, who is delighted and can't wait to get out on the roads again.
Was a little sad to see her go, but I felt better once I saw my new baby in the garage.
One last picture for old times sake:
How did you keep yr pipes clean?

Ok kids, so purchased a Power commander off Pritch08 last year sometime and it's been sitting on my garage work bench waiting for me to save some pinger to get it installed, however was informed that I should really get it dyno tuned at the same time, especially after having the exhausts changed. My bike has been noticeably jerky at low revs since the exhausts were changed, have learned to live with it, but the time had come to get it sorted.
Took the bike into Wellington Motorcycles Yesterday morning, told them they could have it the whole week to change the front sprocket, install the power commander, dyno tune and service my baby. They rang this avo to let me know it was all done and ready to take home, now THAT is service!!
So hubby dearest collected said beast and I took it for a spin when I got home from work.
WEEE JOY RAPTURE :woohoo:
Smooth, is the first thing I thought, that and , "oh goodness, the power comes on fast now", no more waiting about for it to decide to do something, instant power, revs higher and smoother and gets up to speeds I should not be traveling rather quickly now. Have to say, almost as exciting as the Gixer now, just more comfortable getting there.
Gear changing is also way way easier. I just have to touch the leaver with my boot and up it shifts. Sweet!!!
So there you are, warned you it wasn't exciting, look at this type of bling, but actually more exciting in the riding performance stakes. Now I just need Flame to show me how to do those wheelies!!!:devil2:

...warned you it wasn't exciting...
Where did you warn us of that? :)
Now you'll REALLY be able to wring its neck at the track day!!!

In the brief ride I had, it really has made a big difference. Smoother crisper throttle, power on earlier in the rev range and the gear change is sublime.
I will be happier to swap bikes now :niceone:

Yes Skelsy, much easier to wring its neck now, was having a play last night and it's frighteningly easy now, hohohohoho.:devil2:
And a radar detector may be a good idea...... nah, I'm a good girl and can try to restrain myself!

Think you need to find a track out the back of the rapa and REALLY wring its neck.

Good service and well done Welly Motorcycles! Why is it I only ever here good service stories about Wellington bike shops, and crap service stories (and personal experiences too) about Chch bike shops? Something's amiss...
Anyway, great to hear the power commander has finally been installed and nicely tuned, sounds like it'd feel like a whole new bike! After test riding a 900 Hornet myself the other day, and wondering if I was wearing my ear plugs when I wasn't, it was that quiet, I'd say that the exhaust mod would have to be compulsory if you like hearing your bike, as I do... :devil2:
Must be about due some more pics, eh? :innocent:

So what has improved the gearbox? Mines a bit 'crunchy' sometimes.
