Heyas! Found this site while looking for information on Suzuki FXR150's, thought i'd say hello and maybe pop a question or 2 :)

Basically, i'm completely new to bikes and looking around i've got myself rather dead set on a FXR150 to get learning on... that, and 150cc was alot better when trying to convince the family to not disown me for wanting one at all :D

Just a couple of questions... i'm 6ft 1 (187cm) and as far as i can gather the FXR is a small bike, will i be fairly comfortable?

Also, buying second hand are there any things i need to be especially wary of?

Cheers all!

Gudday Toymachine! Welcome to KB.

Try the search function for reliability of your bike.
As for your size, one thing is to do some test rides to make sure you are comfortable on that type/style of bike. Once you progress onto something a little larger there will be more options available to you...

Enjoy the site, and watch out after dark... the nutters here are sometimes nocturnal...

Damn I would be trying to sell mine to you right now, but I've sold mine.

I'm not sure about your size, but I'm 165cm and It was on a little bit high side for me (I was tip toeing...)

As for what to watch out for.... look for signs of worn chain/sprokets and rust on chain which might indicate the bike hasn't been taken a good care of. Also have a look at what tyres they have. Pirelli MT75, BT39 or TT900GP (I think I've got it right....) are damn good tyres for fxr but most come with shitty stock IRC tyres or you might find some with conticity which is marginally better than irc but I don't like them too much. (they are ok in wet but they suck in wet)

MT75 or BT39 will probably cost around 260-320 fitted for the front and rear and TT900 will cost quite a bit more.

FXR150s are pretty good bikes, if you find one in good condition, it's fairly cheap to maintain (only one cylinder and not too much power to reck havok on tyres, chain, etc...) and if you take the time to keep it in good condition (ie keep the chain lubed, etc...) it will serve you well.

If you can see how it starts from cold as well... Mine started really easy on electric start everymorning and I haven't heard much complaints but you never know, hard to start fxr150 maybe hiding bigger problems (seeing that most are so easy to start)

I'm about your height (6ft someting) and the fxr is too small for me - ok for really short trips and things like that but i doubt i could do anywhere near 50kms on it before getting cramps

welcome to kb, my bandit is a tall bike so its ok

Welcome to the site.

The FXR will feel small for you, but it will still be a great first bike.
Have you considered a RG150? Or kr150? The 2 strokes are abit more fun in my opinion.
Hope you find something to suit you, i look forward to pictures! :)

Cheers for the replies, seems the FXR will be a tad small then? Still, hopefully be a decent first bike... as for the 2strokes i'm not really interested in more power at the moment having no riding experience, but i'll see whats availiable.

Hopefully can find a decent FXR..

Hey, welcome to the site!

Anything stopping you from going 250? What about a ZZR, GPZ? Or maybe even those hyosung things (sp ?), i believe they are powered by kawasaki, and not too bad, quite a sizeable 250 for the taller folk.

Being tall or big in other ways on a little bike makes the whole experience more difficult, otherwise people would learn on mini motos.

Anyway, good luck, enjoy the site, and enjoy the world of biking and welcome to the fold.

Welcome to the site.

Im 6'1 and my fxr was just fine for town hooning but a real pain on open roads. Not enough wind protection for something with such little power. Still a damn fun little bike and great for learners.

Well smaller the engine the easier it is on families nerves ;)

But TBH i haven't looked bigger because i'm not sure how i'll cope with a 250 being really new to riding... spose could just ease myself into it a little slower...

Will have a look around i guess

I understand the family thing, word it this way; "As tall as I am, it is better to have that little extra power, not to get me in the crap, but to get me out!"

You are just as likely to spill and get in crap on a 250 as anything smaller, at that engine size, it makes F all difference. Comfort level does make a huge difference though. If you are a giant on a small bike, you will not be able to handle it properly, and you will be auckward, which arguably will cause you more problems than being over powered.

I am not familiar with the bike you mentioned, but given speed isn't what your going for (which is wise), being the right fit for the bike (or visaversa) is really important.

You are stuck with 250 or under for quite a while, pick a bike you like and are comfortable on. Sure, it isn't forever, and isn't your dream bike, but mine isn't either and it isn't too small (stature not speed), ride before you buy and try and keep the new bike thrill out of it.

That's my advice anyway, take it or leave it.

Happy riding anyway!

I second that. (I'm a shade over 6ft). If you do get one, as others have said, don't replace the tyres with standard when the time comes. You can get much better rubber for a range of prices. Standard rear was $195 but I got a slighter larger tyre from the tyre shop for $119 and it improved handling no end.

Have fun here and as no one else has warned you yet ... don't open the 4th door on the right.

Thanks for the advice... and those are some valid points too, have got me thinking. I suppose if it's rather smooth on power delivery (which is the 4stroke trait?) i'd be ok with the bigger one? I love the look of the FXR but if it's not going to be comfortable i guess it's not worth it... eventually i'll be going for a ride to hamilton from aucks to see a mate so that wouldn't be fun while cramped :D

Well when you do, provided it is a Sunday, let me know.

My GF has just got her learners and bought a VTR 250, she is from Hamilton. So if you want some no preasure company on your first long distance ride, as I say, let me know, we will come with you, split while there, and meet up again for the ride home.

Sure you'll do ok, at the end it is your call . Myself excluded, a lot of experienced people on here (and wankers), and their advise is worth its weight in gold.

FXR 150's are awesome learner bikes. Get one with not more than 2 owners. They are learners bikes so the clutch gets a hard life.

1.) Get someone who knows about bikes to check it out/test ride it thoroughly.

2.)Take it to a mechanic, (most bike shops have these) and get them to check it out thoroughly.

Wash, rinse and repeat.

I was just thinking this was the one in the other thread, and it is.
Toymachine, you need to be aware that anything you buy second hand privately, there is a chance that it will not be what its advertised as. So take someone with you who knows what they are doing and get them to ride it and check it out for you, if you are unsure take it to a bike mechanic and get them to inspect it. Personally I would go for the 250 option like a volty or similar as your height will be an issue for comfort. Check around the shops for good deals.
