View Full Version : Any Motorhome Experts?
Finn

I'm in the market for a purpose built Motorhome. My two options are to put a ridiculous offer on a recently completed one or buy a body and have an EXPERT customise it.
I'm looking at between 9 - 11 metres and I'm not talking Bob the Bus with a mattress on the floor and a hole as a shitter. Fully kitted out with all the fruit. Utter luxury is the goal.
Anybody here know a thing or two?

A common misconception amongst owners of Motorhomes is that you have to be old and wear light blue stubbies pulled up to your armpits.
But yes, early retirement.

Nice, get a motorcycle mount on the back so you can take your bike with you as per link
http://www.bike-racks-plus.com/cowboy_carriers/motorcycle_racks.htm
That way you can take to the best roads in the country, or to track days etc.

Good one Finn, house bussing is a great lifestyle.
The wife and I took a year off work a few years back and lived the goodlife. Was a great time.
Sounds like yours will be a bit more upmarket than what we had. But heres some pics of our old 'Beddy'

If you're handy with tools, buy a body and kit it out yourself. Much cheaper option and you get what you want. It's not that hard. Go visit the Gypsy people when they're in town and look around their buses, especially buses with about the same size as yourself. You'll know what works and what doesn't.
The longer the better but at 11m you might run into problems at motor camps because the bus is too long. Try to get a bus which by default has a flat floor, ideally 2.4m wide and 2m floor/ceiling height. 4x4 would be hanfy but is only on the tiny 7m buses.
When gutting the bus, never throw anything electronic away. It might turn out to be the $10k gearbox control unit located underneath a random seat and tow truck fees for buses are $1k ... oh and manual gearbox override won't work without that controller unit too :nya:
Good luck.

Nice. I just saw one with a home theatre in it for $650,000US. I'll offer them $200,000NZ and see if they bite. I'll just tell them the exchange rate is $3.50, it's not like they'll know. They also said free delivery.
As someone else said, you're limited by the size of some of the motorcamps although I would only use them if necessary. It's amasing how quickly you'll use the space in an 11 metre bus and width is the real killer. Those extending sides are the trick.

Actually, the Italians make better motorhomes than the yanks. It's just all the electrics and gas that make them mobile time bombs.

My Father in Tauranga buys late model buses and converts them into Top Quality Motor homes. No short cuts. All the fruit. Beautiful finish. Can build to your specs. Will be starting on a new bus shortly.

Of course they do. It's that innate style thing.
But they don't actually buy them.
I hate to say this, but we're thinking of renting one next year.
I'll show those flash gits on the Autostrada. 70 km/h in the left lane.
I must remember the NZ stickers too.

I reckon Finn whatever you get you need to be able to have another form of transport, ie a bike on the back, or a truck trailer type deal so you can un hitch and piss off to town or whatever without having to take the whole damn house with you. I think thats the worst thing, once youre set up camping or whatever youre stuck there no transport, something to think about mate

2 dozen beer for the person than can track down this motorhome. Apparently it's in Taupo. The number plate is a bit hard to read - have a crack.

Family on my inlaws side spend half a year every year just touring in their home bus. Bloody nice thing too. They tow a small jeep behind so that when they want to go into town, into the bush etc. they have easy wheel sto use. Chuck a few trail bikes onto the back and you have a perfect house.
