Just wanting to know guys, how do you tell?
When im riding down the road at 120 every other car seems to be doing it too, and im sure they are only likly to be doing 100-105, do i have an optimistic honda speedo? is she faking up the speed?
what do you all compare you guys against?
just that the other day i was behind a cop in paddy wagon and got bored of sitting behind it. My speedo read 110kmph, but i guessed it was out a wee way and decided to overtake the cop, when i did... the lights came on, and i was already a way wee way away and thought, shit is that me?! eventually came to a stop when i thought hard about it. he told me then that he was doing 105kmph and i came passed him obviously at higher speed, what was my explanation? i told him my sisters boyfriends mother had a dog that was dieing and that the lady that was looking after this dogs husband had a son with a bike that needed petrol fast and from Te Awamutu, so thats why i was in a hurry, after being asked what the real reason was i told him about the speedo that i thought was out, i also looked nervous and yadda yadda and he told me that i should know better then to use that excuse. anyways he ran back to paddy wagon and said blah blah and came back and said he was letting me off with a warning (cheers dude!) and that hed saved me like around $120, so yeah, thanks to him but i still reckon my speedo's out and was wondering how you guys checked yours.
Also i just felt like starting a thread coz i havnt done in months.
oh and outside of bikes, how do you guys tell how she(the one that must be obeyed) is faking it?
... not that id need to know for personal issues or anything.. :sweatdrop coz no way does she fake it or anything:2guns: ... but just for umm, you know, the sake of knowing? yeah thats it... wait, i dont even have a she? damn. well tell me anyway! :Offtopic:

Whoa is this like the issue of trying to explain to a cop why you can't ride a motor bike with cramp easy... :o....
Or if my bike could go that quick officer I'd jump of it and SCREEM thanks to the gods...
But hey my speedo must be going way to slow or something cause a few months ago a cop did me for 129kph or something in a 100kph zone ... and ATM and for quiet a while my bikes had many a Prob... one of the three running to rich... running on three cylinders... or running to lean... but as it is only a shitter to me i havent worryed cause it can do what i need it to do wheather its healthy for it or not but I know one thing it cant do to well is get above 100kph :(
But is she faking it for Me i doubt not...
Just running like a Dog :brick:
And KK "Cough KY Cough" I think you know when she was Faking it :bleh:

Well you can check your odometer accuracy against the fixed distance markers down Ramarama way. Since speedos make my buns look... *ahem*...usually work off the same hardware, it would not be unreasonable to expect the speedo is accurate as the odometer.
Otherwise the next best thing is to test against an accurate measuring device, such as a correvitt (I think these only fit on cars), GPS speedo, a race-timer or against the track computer at the drags (although that will only tell you your speed at the trap, and you have to be looking at it at the instant you cross the line).

Check me speedo against some one elses at a set speed.
As for her,who gives a shit.
Ask your Dad where his co-workers get their speedos certified & see if they can do bikes too.
Or if a radar test can be set up for you, since they're calibrated regularly too.
As to the other question? I couldn't possibly comment! ;)

The Fixxer's speedo is factory set 7km/h faster then what you're actually doing afaik.

around auckland are mobile speed camera thingees --they tell ya on a big as board how fast you are going.- maybee a ride by one of them might help

At a recent speed trials on a closed Wairarapa road, I was timed for the flying quater at 263kph.
The fucken speedo was reading 280+! Ripped off, I want my money back.
Jimbo750 was timed at 270 something but I smoked him by 0.4 of a second on the standing quater.
Flying was timed with only 1k run up.
So to summarise, speedos are pretty inaccurate.
As for your missus faking it, what's she faking?

The CBR's speedo is in MPH, so I'm constantly trying to do conversions (but officer I was going less than 100, MPH that is:whistle: ). 100KPH approx 62.5MPH (so I go 65MPH just to make sure, would hate to be done for going too slow:msn-wink: ).
As the girls in my life, they have soon learnt that if they are stupid enough to fake it, then they are only diddling themselves out of some real pleasure:hug:  :yeah: :msn-wink:
In the UK a speedo has to be 100% accurate or allow 10% in your favour. I've tested the GS against a GPS and at 100mph on the clock the GPS read 90. I can live with the 10% if it stops those cameras flashing.
Plod cars, by the way, are calibrated to be 100% accurate. And to quote one of our local bike cops, "nothing pisses me off more than someone overtaking me when I'm doing the limit".
Perhaps they might feel the same way over there?

When I had my bike on the dyno they said it was reading 110kmh, when actually travelling at 100kmh. Ive been meaning to test it against someone elses speedo, but then again, theres is likely to be incorrect as well. Is it a safety margin so we have no excuse for exceeding speed limits ?
As to the 2nd part of the question - who really cares if she's faking it or not, as long as you aren't !!

Plod cars, by the way, are calibrated to be 100% accurate. There is no instrument for measurement, that I know of, that could be 100% accurate (I believe 99.99% but even than would be good enough).

I had my bike on the dyno and at 7,000 it was supposedly travelling at 100kph, (with allowance for rear tyre squish 105) why am I screaming past everything then?
Have got a pushbike speedo i have to get around to installing... might play Far Cry today.

Go for a blat with a good GPS receiver. Haven't done it with the FXR yet, though.
I tested mine against those mobile speed trailer thingys and it was within 1-2kms at 80kph, not sure if that means it is sweet everywhere or just at 80.
How is the speedo driven for your bike KK? Cause if it is off the front sprocket and you have changed your gearing then that could be the problem.

Bad news, peoples. Speedos are deliberately set up by the factory to be optomistic (i.e., read faster than you're actually going). They're usually anywhere between 3 and 10% out. Why? Dunno, but one explanation I read that sounded reasonable is that because of regulations like the UK ones that say that they need to be correct or optomistic, so they err on the side of reading too fast so people can't bitch about the manufacturer being at fault if they get pinged for speeding.
If you've an electronic speedo, you can get devices to adjust them (Jaycar Electronics sell one such kit, and there's the more expensive Yellow Box made in Oz). I've recently dropped my gearing, so it's reading way too fast, but it makes no real difference as I ignore the speedo most of the time anyway. You generally *know* how fast you're going by how it feels, except when you're doing (unaccustomed) sub-light speeds.
What's up with those speed-displaying trailers? I liked the ones that told you how many dollars you'd earned by being impressively fast, and the ones that only displayed your speed. It was very entertaining seeing how fast you could accelerate between seeing the thing and passing it, but the last two I saw just went "SLOW DOWN" or summat once you were a few kph over the limit.
What a swizz....

The 888 runs at about 7-8% optimistic and is in MPH so it also can be fun working out what I'm really doing.

Anyone remember the early gixx750 speedo's? you could wind them right off the end (280kph,I think) when they only ever did 230-240.......

the speed trap at the drags wont work. it works on an average speed over the last 66ft before the finish line. I did the drags at meremere and was trying for a trap time of 200kph so did as you told looked at the speedo and was highly pleased to see 210kph at the finish line. however the trap time came in at 196kph and speedo was accurate.

Neither my 86 or 88 had that problem. 86 read 235 at just under redline of 11,000rpm in 6th, the 88 could do 250+ on the dial, but I can't remember how many revs it was doing and it definately was going faster than the 86...

Hey KK,
I took mine up against a calibrated police car, i know it is about 5 kmh out so stick around the 63-65 mark, and if i do that speed i am generally doing the same speed as everyone else (ie 55-60 kmh)........

Yeah. It's probably about as accurate a measurement as you're going to get without radar or laser.
KK, if you or anyone else wants to do the GPS thing on your bike, PM me and we'll set up a run sometime.

Why was the cop doing 105km/h? That's speeding. Shurely a professional driver wouldn't 'accidentally' let their speed exceed the limit.
The electronic speedo on the Bandit is 5% fast, but it gives a margin for error. In case I 'accidentally' exceed the limit.

lou, i do agree a bit, but hey, we are human and make mistakes firstly - i have lots of consideration for cops :) but what made me a little worried is that he honestly admitted that straight to me, now in theory he could get stuffed in court too could he not? thought he was being a bit too honest, would ahve been better off to say he was doing 100 and i came past - outcome is no different, im still nontheless speeding.
I got just this problem with the Pajero - it's got bigger tyres than standard,so it's gunna read slow - but how much slower.Sometimes at 100km I'm cleaning everything up,other times it's me getting cleaned up.I even tried tailing a cop when I was showing 90kph - good oh,that's it then.but then the cars start passing him! damn,I just won't find out till I get told....in writing.

Bike computers are dead accurate if you set them up right. Their sampling rate is slow though, so the readout doesn't increase as quickly as your acceleration.

I've always thought that my speedo was a bit out (like 3-4kph) but always kept the bike around 60kph to avoid getting more tickets.
Well got hold of a gps unit and took it out on my Suzuki FXR150and was shocked at the results.
When my speedo says 60kph the actual speed is 50kph that's out by 20%. So when I'm think i'm doing 60kph i'm actually driving like an old granny at 50kph
I can't believe they let bikes into the country with speedo's that far out

Well i was just out with Milky, and we found one of those speed signs which tell you how fast your going, so ofcourse we are young and stupid, so went past them at speed......... Milky got about 143kmh...... So I went up the hill, and gave it shit, i was doing a solid 185-190kmh........ And was very dissapointed that it didnt pick up my speed :( ......
Then we did the smart thing.... and checked our speedos...... I did exactly 100kmh...... and it read exactly 100kmh :eek5: where milkys was reading 94kmh at 100.......
