Ok since the last one worked out great and there was a call for another,
here it is.

We can do either side you want, that is North side, from the boat ramp up.
Or the MX track if we have non regoed bikes with us.

Or the South side from Dickeys Rd and Coutts Island Rd or from McLeans Island (Gun Clubs and Isaac Ponds) up.
Unless you want to get in deep deep sticky mud I would say we start from McLeans Island.

The South side you can ride easier with a non regoed bike and could ride up to the Intake Rd and back.

I'm in.
North or South side doesn't worry me.
If you want to start from McLeans Island, that's cool I'll still go in via Coutts Island and scoot down the stop banks to meet you at McLeans as it's the shortest route from home for me.

I'm in. 30th is OK for me. We're going to Nelson the following weekend (5/6th Aug) now. I'm keen to try the E-09's out. Got them today - so need to "break them in".

I'd rather not go near Coutts island. Last time I was near there it had lots of 4wd swallowing holes let alone bikes. Mcleans up sounds good to me given we just did the north side.

Cheers

Yep, the 30th should be fine for me too (and proberbly J.)
I vote for a McLeans Island start, headding towards the Intake too.
I will wait and see how i feel as to which bike i take but i must say i DID have fun with the Transalp last time.

The same for me and if time we can do the muddy tracks on the way home, if you want?

So it's a McLeans Island start at 11:00 am.

And I'm real sure that Green Meanie will be there and I'm asking another mate on a DR650 to come as well (Russell).

Ummmmm yep they are much better than seriously worn D605's. Went over to a new subdivision and had a play in an old strawberry paddock :innocent: They are going to be heaps of fun.

Sounds good, but where at Mcleans? The gravel "car park" just off Mcleans Island Road?

That be Haul Rd on the right, just past the first Recreation Area sign and a Fire Risk Arrow sign on the left. (when comming from the city end heading toward Orana Park)

I'm looking foward to this, undecided which bike to take at the moment.
Janet will not be going on this ride, i'm taking her out for another short ride in the forrest on Saturday instead, will bring her with us next time SDU comes out to play.

Janet will be waiting a long time for me to get out to play again. My next weekend off is in November!- unless someone offers me a job that gives me the weekends off. So tell her not to wait for me but to just go for it.
Wish I could come out to play - haven't done the South side since Queens B'day 2005- Lemans tells me it has changed heaps since then- Have fun all:bye:

You all have the right place to meet at by the way.

And Green Meanie (KLX400) is up for the ride as well and is feeling a lot better as well. (so will not be riding like a Nana)
But I have not got a straight answer out of Russell (DR650) yet.
And another guy from work may borrow SDU Serow (XT250) for a test ride.
If that happens I will have trailer the bikes to the river as he does not have a bike licence and the bike rego is on hold.

Just have to hope for the good weather now aye! Keen to give the E-09's a decient go off road. Curious though - what pressure do you guys run in them on road. I'm finding the front kinda skittery. It runs ok but I feel far less stable than on the D605.

I managed a slow (30kphish) low side off on some ice/new E-09s (with maybe to much air???) on the way into work on Monday morning. This is my first road off. Got sore thumb, some very minor bruising, cracked front guard, hole in the mesh part of my jacket and a very shaken ego. Went down so fast didnt have a chance to even think about recovering. Extremely amazed how little damage there is to the bike - just the front guard crack (got a new one on the way) and some scratching of the left handguard - can't see anything else and everything works fine.

Need to get back on the horse - hence looking forward (with apprehension) to the trip this comming weekend. Hopefully the southerly front passes through at just the right time.

Cheers

I run 12-15psi off road, lowering the pressure makes a BIG difference. Have you got rim locks fitted? You really need them if you're going to go to low pressures. I run 22-26psi on the road.

Well I run 18-25 psi on the road and normally use 18 as I can not be bothered changing the pressures all the time.
I would drop the pressures in 2 psi increments until you find a pressure that you like.
You should be all right running pressures as low as 18 psi with out rim locks.
I would recommend using rim locks if you are running pressures lower than that.

Interesting, the E09's are fine on the Transalp in all on road conditions.
So what pressure do you have in the E09's (just thinking it is a lighter bike). Maybe you need a small adjustment to your cornering technique on these tyres.
Also, another thought... ice is extra slippery especially if you are trying to corner on it and so maybe tyres weren't going to make a difference this time anyway.
Glad your ok, see you on the weekend.

26th July 2006, 08:08
Thanks for the comments guys. I have the front pressure at about 25 and the rear at about 22 at the moment. I think I'll try dopping the front to around 20-22ish and see if it helps. The tyres seem pretty stiff walled so I'm guessing they should be up to it.

I think you are right Transalper about the learning a different technique for cornering with these tyres - go slower! LOL :blip: It is a corner that never drys out in winter (never gets any sun) so suspect it was sheet/black ice which I'm guessing I didnt have a chance on anyway unless I was really slow. Was just unsure how much to expect from the tyres.

I had a look at the site yesterday and realised that given where the bike ended up I must have been about 3/4 of the way around the corner and straightening up before I came off so suspect it was ice rather than tyres or cornering technique.

All is sorted now - new front guard on, jacket patched (Oh no not a narsty patch!!!! LOL), and body mostly back to normal. So all good for Sunday.

Really at the end of the day if you strike ice, it does not matter what ties you are on.
That is unless they are ice tires that have spikes.
And then they will be crap on the normal tar seal.

When I'm riding with knobbly tires I just go slow in to the corner and power up all the way out and find the limits of grip.
Yes they can drift a bit (at times), but thats just a good thing, right?

And my tank weighs about 150kg's so those lower tire pressures should be fine on your lighter bike and you may even go lower.

Na, J's coming out Saturday for a putt putt.
I'm undecided on my choice of bike for Sunday. I can't reach Plug so don't know if he's going, and I don't want to be the only heavy weight bike there, so got the CRF ready too.

Tell J to toughen up and come out and play, shealbe all right.

I'm not sure that the Transalpe would be much fun to ride on the South side.
It's a lot tighter and rougher compered to the North side.
You could do it, but you will be working for it, so eat an extra WeetBix or two.
And it will be harder to take another route and meet up with us again.

6 of us met up at Mcleans Island and rode up the Waimak river banks to the intake - around 35-40km and back again. Weather and track conditions were great, just enough mud to have a bit of fun, no dust, the ground was just moist enough for great traction - except for the bit where my front wheel decided to choose it's own path and the rest of the bike went out in sympathy and had a wee lie down :innocent: A good mix of high and low speed bits, dirt roads and tight and twisty in the trees.

Still tired at the end of the ride, but way better than my last time there in the snow and ice. Home to a big chunk of chocolate cake and a coffee, mmmm.

Great ride guys, I had a ball, cant wait to see the video :wait:

1. The group part way in.

you'll be fine, and welcome.
Except for myself on the CRF230 this ride everyone else was on road regestered bikes with DOT approved duel purpose tyres. The one's with the more open pattern managed better than the more road orientated tyres but the close pattern tyres stll made it all the way. And the small bikes had size/weight advantages this trip.

I'll pull some frames and post pict's soonish (maybe Friday), watch for my next post.

I'm new to the "group" if you can call us that and have done two trail rides now (this one and the other Waimak one earlier in July). I did the first one on very worn street orintated tyres (got new tyres for warent purposes now though) so you'll be fine. I tend to hang out near the back of the group and help others and the rest are really good at waiting and helping to.

I'm on a 250 "adventure" bike (not a hard out dirt bike) and seem to keep up, unless they are going slow for me :2thumbsup I've found this group great to learn from too. I've heard that the marshin 200 is a XR200 based bike so should be fine.

Was thinking the other night, there's all these different events. Cold Kiwi, that 1500k or 1000k one, etc, etc. But there isn't one in which you travel the length of the country/island avoiding all roads except where completely unavoidable.

It would be like a 3+ day event and the organisers would need to have fuel located at strategic spots. Could be like our very own Dakar/Baja.

Seriously - stops are welcome when it gets like that but I'm also a gluton for punishment. Nice to wear yourself out every so often. I think it is a drug addition of mine - I like endorphins - guess that is why I have tried Le Race and the Rainbow Rage twice each, over 5 hours on a treadly is kinda hard on the body (I would mention the sore arse as well but that is a little close to buggery).

Come to think of it I think it was all Lemans's fault. He did all the buggering with speed no less.:blip:

You pair of buggers can leave me out of this conversation, thank you very much.

I normally ride to the intake before I stop, you softies.
And sometimes I ride to the gorge bridge for my first stop, if I going to ride down the other side of the river and are in a hurry.
