View Full Version : Canterbury: Mt Cook

Just thought that Mt Cook is about half way from north to south of the south island and could include a good number of SI Kiwi bikers for a bit of a whatever etc. Perhaps a day ride is a bit far and the socialising would be minimal. I have no idea of what accomidation is avaliable or if there is a camping ground.

The next question is when. I have a daughter getting married in November just not too sure of the date. So I'm open to suggestions. Would prefer a month where the weather is settled. So suggestions anyone. There's no rush with this although the sooner a date is finalised the more people can orgaise themselves to attend.

My typings gone to shit. Should be Mt Cook.

Sounds like a great spot for a KB gathering.

There is a good camping ground at Glentanner Park at the head of Lake Pukaki, on the road to Mt Cook. Helicopter flights leave from there for a flight round the mountain and over to the West Coast (for those financially inclined).

As discussed before, I am keen as long as there is no conflict with any other personal commitment, count me in.
Even Mrs O expressed interest in going along.
The local pub at Otematata was discussed as a possible venue for such an event but the last frosts cleaned out most of their accommodation and flooded the lot.
The pub just changed hands since the Moto Guzzi riders group were here, rocket Ron has moved on.
I will check if you like, there are other establishments here if you are interested.
If it is held here I don't get to go on a ride so I don't care much where you hold it. Cheers John.

Sounds o.k - out on its own but handy to Kurow.

Just need a good 'lead-time' to get days off organised.

Well there seems to be some general interest so the next thing is when.

I'm pretty much jammed up in November daughter's wedding's on the 18 so there are two options. Sometime in October...............or December. Of the two I'd go for October. December is too close to Xmas for me and I guess many others..............but the third choice would be some time in the Chistmas break in January. I know this some way down the track.......but the weather can be better..........but if it's just a short burst for the weekend October........so what's the line on this. Ideas..........................

Count me in also, depending on the dates. Late Octaber - early november would suit me best.

In the Central South Island there is good camping avaibale at Tekapo, GlenTanner (Mt Cook), Twizel, Omarama, Otematata, or 10 acres at our place near Alexandra. Personally I like the Mt Cook idea. :scooter:

I worked in Mount Cook for 7 1/2 years (at the Hermitage Hotel) so if you have any general questions about the hotel or the Mt Cook area feel free to drop me a PM and I'll see if I can provide an answer.

Umm, no one has said they wanted to but you probably don't want to stay at the Hermitage complex. Even the cheapest option (a 'Chalet') is $280 for 4 people + $75 per additional person (after 1 October).

Here's the link to the Hermitage Hotel and a bit of Mt Cook info anyway. http://www.mount-cook.com/
and here's Glentanner Park http://www.glentanner.co.nz/

In addition to those there is also a DOC camping ground at the start of the Hooker Valley just past the Mt Cook village. Another option real close to Mt Cook is Unwin Hut which is about 5 km short of the village and is a popular spot for climbers and school groups to stay. (Dormitory style accommodation)

Good luck. Might even come myself.

Assuming that October early Nov is a goer what's the weather like for camping. Personaly I like the idea of a hut or some kind of shelter. If the weather turns to custard......................just no fun camping in the rain. Teh Unwin hut sounds interesting

Don't think the Hermatage is realy an option considering the price.

You can never depend on the weather at any time of the year in Mount Cook. Can be glorious and turn to shit in an hour. I used to live in Twizel and commute to Mt Cook 65kms away and the weather could be completely different. It's just an alpine micro-climate. Even Glentanner 20 km down the road can have a nice day while it can rain all day at Cook.
It does rain regularly. I started there on 28 September 1994 and it rained there for at least part of each of the following 40 days. On the other hand if you get a nice day it's just glorious!
I can't find prices for Unwin Hut but here's a link for enquiries if you're interested. http://www.fourcorners.co.nz/new-zealand/product/?product=unwin-hut
It's not much more than a place to sleep but it's warm and dry ... and fairly cheap I guess. (The place does have a live in manager)

If you do look at staying near Cook, the most reasonable place to eat is probably the 'Chamois Bar'. They do pretty cheap bar meals and the bar prices are the same as the city. (Well that was 4 years ago but I don't think they would have changed that as it's where the staff drink).

As an option, you could stay at Twizel and just do a day trip to Mt Cook. I never had the opportunity to do it but the Mt Cook Rd would be a great bike ride.

HA! Didn't look at this cause I thought it was something to do with food and the cooker thereof...
As long as I have a roadworthy bike I'd be keen. Seem to recall the accomodation being rather pricey, and they knew eachothers prices down to the cent. So at the time it looked like they had an agreement to keep prices up:nono:

One disadvantage of parking up over night at Mt Cook is that the Kias will peck your bikes to bits if there are not enough tourists wagons for them to amuse themselves on.
I love them to bits for everything except that. For damage to my bike I hate the little bastards.
Strangely I think it's funny when they do it to some strangers vehicle! :innocent: Just a thought. Cheers John.

Yep. That's what bike covers are for.

As for the date, the later it is held, the more events it will clash with.

eg. Last weekend in November is the Burt Munroe memorial weekend in Southland. First weekend in December is the Chatto Creek 1000 miler. etc.

Since I'm probably moving in December November suits me better.

Could organise a bunch to ride from here down West Coast picking up riders on the way - would be fun. Not too sure about the Kea's tho - might have to look at options......

Keep us all informed of plans.

Oakie

Yep. That's what bike covers are for.

Believe me ... covers are no guarantee against these birds. The GM's wife got a brand new Mercedes convertible. Had it protected with a cover but within a couple of weeks one clever Kea had pecked through the cover to get to the nice leather headrests. Bloody intelligent birds they are ... and real clowns. Loved watching the juvenile ones doing forward rolls down the snowy slope just outside my office.

Is that Glentanner camping ground far enough back from the mountain to be free of the keas?

Yeah, it's about 25 km down the road from Mt Cook, right at the head of Lake Pukaki. I've never heard of keas being a problem there because it's not really 'alpine' although I wouldn't be surprised if the odd one or two popped in every now and then.
By the way ... Glentanner isn't just camping. There are a few huts there.

You South Island bastards should be flogged for flagrantly flaunting your mind-numbingly beautiful scenery -- and roads -- at us poor, comparatively bereft northerners. Getting mugged by Hoodies in Rotovegas is about our lot in terms of a North Island "tourist icon" gathering. Or a rendezvous at the Hundertwasser crapper at Kawakawa. Bring your own paper...

Great idea Skyrider. I have stayed at Unwin Hut yonks ago and it must have been cheap as I was a poor student at the time. Not much room there for camping as I remember but lots of bunks. Yeah, keas could be a bit of a problem. Mt Cook/Glentanner is my pick.

There are lots of rallies around Nov - add Bottled Lightning on weekend of Nov 11 (Chch show weekend Also I think). October can be quite good weather otherwise early new year sounds ok.

The Glentanner camp ground sounds cheap enough for us poor campers. But I'll need plenty off warning to get time off work to go though, thats if I can.

It appears that every weekend from Labour weekend, right through November, and the first 2 weekends in December already has some rally or event on the motorcycle calender. So how about the 16th and 17th of December, or does that clash with everyones Xmas functions?

Probably we wil just have to set a date and accept that there will be clashes that may mean some riders just have to chose. I'll nominate the 11th and 12th of November (seeing as how I already have that weekend off work on annual leave).

If you are after cheap accomodation at Mt Cook there is a good backpackers 5 minutes - make that 10, stagger from the Hermitage.I stayed there March and it was really warm with awesome views out the dining room windows to the mountains.Theres a good Cafe/bar that had the most expensive cup of coffee I have ever had in NZ, still not suprising considering the location and cost of freight - still saying that, the coffee is cheaper on Stewart Island. If you are into the outdoors the walk up to the glacier is beautiful and inspiring if that sort of stuff does it for you.

You probably stayed at the Youth Hostel. Yes it is 5 to 10 minutes stagger from the Herm ... however about 20 minutes stagger to the Herm. Trust me. I made that trip in a staggerly (?) fashion on more than one occasion in the early morning.

The expensive coffee was probably from the Herm's Coffee Shop. I think it was $5 a cup when I left there 4 years ago. Sandwiches ... hah! ... take out a bank loan.

Great place though and they do know how to look after guests.

Good to see so much interest. I have had a look at the response and two things come to mind. First is the general expense of the accommidation at Mt Cook and the other is concern for bird damage to bikes. Something I did no think of when I proposed this ride.

So what about an overnight at Twizal with din dins and drinkies of your choice and a Sunday run up to the Hermatage for coffee etc for those interested. Sort of a group ride thing. It's about a 60 k ride. Is this too far considering the ride home?? For Christchurch riders this would entail about 350k trip home. With daylight saving sunset is somewhere around 9.00 pm.

When? I'm thinking of the first weekend of December that's the 2 and 3. Hows this sound??? It's going to clash with something................just trying to make it minimal.

If it's a goer I'll post confirmation some time next week and those interested can make bookings etc.

Yeah, I was thinking that overnighting in Twizel would be the best plan too. Staying in Twizel is cheaper all around and is probably a better venue for socialising and eating. I might even be able to get a discount at the Holiday Lodge for you although the way the place is now they may be pretty much booked up anyway. Start of December would be good. Weather is settled and the area won't be over-run with holiday makers for a couple of weeks after that.
Mrs Oakie and I just might make that trip depending on what's happening here. (Our grand-daughter is due late October).

I just found out today that my eldest son begins work at the Hermatage on 1st December, so that's another good reason to make the trip.. He's assistant Bar Manager, so Stromfrau and I will probably stay there for the sunday night as well.

Any of the Dunedin riders joining in for this trip? So far it looks like SD, OR and us from Otago, and everyone else is from Canterbury.

Looking forward to seeing you Janatar. Was thinking of posting something just to keep this up front. Which reminds me I'd better get some sort of bunkhouse sorted for me somewhere.

Hi guys, I'm starting to get interested in this trip as well. Is there any accomodation organised at this stage? - I reckon I could get a pretty good shearers quarters on a station near Omarama - probably free, but we'd have to take all our food etc (the etc probably weighing more than the food!!)
It would be great to have us stay as a group somewhere and get to meet some new faces.
I would stay with a mate in Alex on Friday night and ride up with Jantar & SD if they let me keep up.

I kinda assumed that actually - and that Stromfrau would give your helmet a bloody good smacking if you started to ride at speeds that would leave me and the "of course I'm law abiding" Mr SD in the distance!!
I presume the OR on your list was OldRider? - you still going on this one John?

I'll join you fellas once I have brought my V-Strom. I have ridden around the Mainland heaps and so oftern was hanging to go beyond the "loose"' roads.
I was amazed at how far I could push my GSX-R1100 with my wife on the back and shit loas of camping gear, though. We did a few basic river crossings-got bloody wet, and rode for miles on "loose'roads but always felt as though we we missing out on the real Mainland riding.

At least I should be able to make the Nelson ride/rally.

Have a good one people!!

There are two events this year that I really want to go to and yes you guessed right, they both now fall on the same bloody day or weekend.

The North Island Coast to Coast, Himatangi beach (West Coast) to Akitio beach. (East Coast)

Very nostalgic cruise for me.

I was borne in Palmerston North, grew up in Woodville, spent many school holidays at Himatangi beach, went to high school at Dannevirke, spent holidays at Pongaroa and my first job after leaving school was at Akitio.

This year I was determined to go on a pilgrimage of nostalgia but it is on the same bloody weekend as the SI KB ride-in at Mount Cook!

To say that I am disappointed is the understatement of the year for me.

Suffice to say I am not yet decided as to which event I will be going to. :( John. (Damn)

I haven't had much luck getting a reply from my contact for accomodation - I suspect they're away on holiday. When I get an answer I'll post it here. In the mean time is there still a group coming from Canterbury?? - about how many and who?
Otematata is another good place to stay and ORider says he'll check out amoungst the many local options for us. Some guide for numbers would help.
Mt Cook is an easy car hour from Omarama and only another 10 mins from Otematata so the location is pretty good.

OK guys I have talked with my contact and there are 3 options I need feedback on.
1) Shearers quarters about 17km towards Omamrama from Otematata. This one has a bunkhouse which is semi partitioned (walls don't go right to the ceiling) and sleeps 7 plus a cookhouse which also has 2 beds. Both blocks have toilets and showers but the two blocks are about 50m apart.

2) Shearers quarters on the other station managed by the same manager and 6km the other side of Otematata. This one is much newer and flasher, sleeps about 20 in separate bunkrooms with 2 beds in each. Good showers etc.

Both these places have all the cutlery, plates, cooking gear needed.
The cost will be a decent size box of beer for the manager

3) there are a couple of backpackers options in Otematata, close to the pub etc but obviously at some (smallish) cost.

Please let me know preferred options so I can get back to the manager and get our names down on it if we want it.
Skyrider have you booked anything?

Probably late on Sat afternoon for about an hour and just before any serious drinking has started - obviously weather dependant.

The lack of restaurants & bars is the biggest downfall of the Shearers quarters - we either take it in to drink/cook it or we have to go down the road to Otematata. But then the pluses are its virtually free and we're a long way from anyone else as far as noise etc goes.

Seems like theres a bit of a mood for Twizel here - I'll check the poll. I Might have to scrounge a tent again.

I will be working for a computer company in Queenstown with some weekend work requirement - but will have to find out what that means when I start.

At grear personal sacrifice and in the interests of all KB'rs intending to go on this trip (yeah yeah cut the crap) - I rode up yesterday and Stayed with Oldrider at otematata and we went and had a look at the Shearers Quarter and the other place. I took lots of pics which I'll put on the poll post shortly.
We would have a great night at these quarters. they're not modern but they have everthing we need. John only lives about 6km away and reckons if we stay there he'd bring a load of booze etc out for us on the back of his wee truck. Theres a BBQ and OK kitchen there so as long as people bring enough to live on for Sat night plus breakfast we'll be fine. There is a social room, plenty of good bunkrooms with beds and mattresses (need sleeping bags).
The site is about 150 metres from the edge of the Lake (Aviemore) and about 200m off the road down an easy driveway that even sports bike riders will manage. The complex is in a U shape with plenty of space in the middle of the U to park the bikes which will keep them safe and away from prying eyes.
The other place, which John will put some photos up on, is really good for $30 per person plus whatever you spend on the meals.
