Northland: Norfland Ride-22/7 [Archive]

The Taniwha has spoken :blah: ....we need another Norfland ride so here it is:
Saturday 22/6 meet in Whangarei to venture off up the East Coast through a variety of twisty latte spilling roads that should have you both smiling...and puckering :blip:
Lunch will be in Russell...mmmm....Tourists :innocent:
Weather pending we'll take the ferry from Opua and head up through Paihia,Waitangi:innocent: ,Puketona Junction and either cut through to Kaikohe or head up to ATTACK the Mungamuka's and back down to take the ferry over to Rawene.
If weather turns average prior we'll simply cut through from Puketona Juction to Kaikohe and either cut over to Opononi/Waipoua Forest/Dargiville etc OR cut from Kaikohe through Mangakahia Rd/Whangarei etc.
These routes are only suggestions at this stage...we have many to chose from :wait:
There are tonnes of places for people to peal off during the day if they are unable to complete the full days riding too....as long as organisers are aware of you taking off as we don't want to be sweeping the country side looking for you with bad thoughts.
There's some spare beds and tent sites available for either the Friday or Saturday night too...which I suggest if ya can't handle the jandle of a FULL days riding on tight 'n twisties.
Once again we'll have at least 2 speed groups,maybe three pending amount of riders attending.

BTW: This will be a Gold Coin Donation Ride...bitch all ya want but if you can't handle donating a bloody gold coin towards KB well...don't come :nya:

But my HERO is RiderInBlack who came to my rescue... he is such a hunny that lad. He lent me his oilskin vest so that I could keep warm.

I ummm just needed a wee bit of assistance to get it on and to undo the vest.

I want one of those oilskin vests.. they are awesome.

I hope that RIB didnt get too cold by the time he got home.
Only thing is I have to give his oilskin back to him....
Do you think he will notice if I kept it..... shhhhhhhhhhh

But the ride itself.... awesome... had a ball... great bunch of folks out there riding today... just that backroad to Russell, seemed to go and on and on forever.
Damn hard on my arm muscles thou... awesome view from up there thou...

Great to catch up with T.I.E, he got some shots, so will have to wait for those to appear.

Only a few mishaps: A missing link, a oops or two and a stuffed zip.

Oh and I did over 500kms today.... thats the longest amount I have done in a long time. My sore knee was feeling in on the home stretch..

Great day out on the bike, brilliant weather (although it started to spit as I came into Dargaville) and as always, some of the best roads Northland has to offer.

Lots of long boring straights coming out of Dargaville heading home, floating along happily, then a corner, a nice corner, a 45, drop a gear, crank the bike over, go to gas it up and - hello.

Flat fucken tyre.

Didn't make it home on the bike, had to get it trailered home from Albany, bike sprung a fuel leak, petrol all over the top of the engine, will get it seen too on monday.

Another great ride up north, awesome bunch to ride with, nice to put faces to
the names of you guys and gals, my hat of to you TL and your northern folk for
a great ride, thanks.

Had a blast down mangakahia Rd on the way back, didn't get the names of the
two guys I was ridin with on the Gxxers thanks that was fun.

A great day had by all despite a couple of minor muck ups,welcome to Hazard County!

Damn, me phinox and insane1 missed out >_< nah it was ok, we wasted a bit of time on the waipu george after lunch wating for kittie 'the binner' hawk to show up. I think the bike was trying to commit suside because it coulnt handle those damn leg warmers eh? But my mate just bought an 89xj600 and if phenix didnt lose his chain, i wouldn't of been able to ride it :D (although I now know why they call it the hinge!!) so alls well that ends well - I just got home a few hours ago I stayed in whagas after watching the game :)

Shout out to insane1 (I hope thats your kb name) good to see someone taking a scooter on a kb ride!

A big thank you to SuperDave, Zapf and Erik for stopping and helping me sort my bike, especially SuperDave who braved a 115kg pillion to Orewa !!

Thanks to that infamous northlander TL Rider for a awesome day. Plenty of front, rear and two wheel slides and sore cheeks from the grin I had riding Old Russel Road and through the Waipoua Forest :2thumbsup

Went to pick up my bike which was conviently left at a pub, got invited in by the owner and spent a while watching the local boxing and lovely northland ladies ...

Bloody good ride. Kept swing between Nana and Hoon modes. The Bourbon at Russell was working a treat by the time we got to Waitangi (as shown by my pitiful Burnout attempt at the gas station:o ). Too bad it had worn off by the time I got to the Forrest. Got ta Dargaville in full Nana mode, moaning away cause I was missing the vest:cold: Fu*ken hard being a gentleman:whocares: Na it's sweet Crashe. Would have done the same thing for anyone. Little bit of cold did me no harm:p
Ya always there when we need you mate, and we all really appreciate that. I was totally impressed when, in passing Korumba asked about a tyre pressure gage, and you just pulled one out of ya pocket, just like a majician, that gets prize of the day from me my friend:second:

cheers for the ride TL, had a really mint day. Bike was handling mint, and handled the pace awesomely except for a bit of tyre spin(?) in second gear, and a few rear wheel drifts under power in the wet :blip:

I even enjoyed my familiarisation with the local flora, the locals thought it was a good show, shit the kids were even clapping and cheering for me!

Will be up there sometime soon. Only thing that didnt tickle my fancy so much was the forrest (i know thats your favourite), i guess if i did it a few times i would be more comfortable with a bit of pace, but i felt a bit uneasy giving the bike some juice with it being wet and having no idea how tight the next corner was going to be.

But on a whole i thoroughly enoyed the northern playground. Chicken strips were small as so there wasnt much for dinner when i got home, all signs of a good ride!

Yep, there's bears in them there woods, be warned. It's a hell of a ride in summer, you can just scream through there. Only takes 3 or 4 rides to get to have a bit of a clue where the really narly corners are, but thats all part of the fun. I love it when I can hit the vegatation with my rear view mirror, now thats a rush:blip:

It was a choice - Take the truck oncoming (as that took up most of the bloody lane!) or rear end the lovely lady on the bike in front of me, or go for the bank,........I decided to play it safe and go for the bank. Wans't too bad, just a wee crash so I've learnt this.......

Anyway just a bit bruised nothing broken apart from the fairings, so might have to patch that up and put some of my legging fur on the missing parts of fairing.

Haha, yes well i'm just glad you waited till today to buy your flashy looking new camera TL, then again, my double loopty loop was probly worth getting on film! Fun lil machines though I must admit, but nothin like the real thing...:ride:

Now concerning the ride, first & foremost, thanks to the Norfland crew and especially TL for organising and encouraging this mid-winter meet, it was good to get up there again and ride your fantastic roads. That was one of the better rides I've been on, ever.

Twas pleasing to see so many bikes turn up at Burger King (23+), and about 12 came up from the Big smoke!! As an aside, I found it's well worth coming up and staying overnight before these norfland rides so you're fresh at the start, I felt for you lot that rode up then back to Ak the same day, it would have been freezing going back at night and you must've been shattered.

I had a brilliant day's riding overall with no 'hairy' moments whatsoever, but I did witness 3 others directly in front of me at different stages take a *strange* line into the corner, including Gareths sudden departure into the bush, which was a shocker to witness but a relief that rider & bike came out relatively unscathed! :gob:
The first half of the ride was unknown territory on a bike for me, so I enjoyed it heaps, some of the roads were damp and there were gravel patches here and there but other than that it was twisty heaven through such a beautiful countryside, the highlight for me being riding up to Tutukaka and then through to Russell. Crossing over on the ferry on a bike was also a 1st ever for me.

Finally, thanks Chris & Annette for your hospitality. In hindsight, getting away from Auckland on the Fireblade for a few days was just what the doc ordered! :niceone:
