View Full Version : New Bike - License Suspended!

An interesting few days....

Got home on Friday from a 2 week holiday during which time Botany Honda sold my SV650S. Great, as this meant I was able to pick up my "new" Philip Island demo GSX-R600 K6 on Saturday.

That afternoon I did the Kaiaua/Hunua Loop with Ninjaboy. After the VTR250 and SV650S, both great learners bikes the GSX-R600 is an awesome ride. Amazing handling, lots of power (for me anyway) delivered very smoothly, and not really peaky as I found the CBR600RR. Brakes are very strong, with good feel. Makes an awesome noise and so far I've only had it up to 11,000rpm or so. The K6's have a lower seat, probably the lowest sportsbike around, and that makes the bike much easier to handle parking and pushing for shorties like me. Riding position is very comfortable with no sore wrists or neck/back or legs, actually more comfortable than I was on my SV650S. Overall, I feel far more confident riding this bike, even in damp and gravelly conditions.

This morning I went out to Maraetai to take some photos then off to Shell Westgate to meet 6 other Kiwibikers. Had an good ride up to Mangawhai for a late lunch then came back the same way. Just north of Kaukapakapa(?) I get zapped by radar (while overtaking a Legacy wagon) at 145km/h. Apart from not budging from the 145km/h, ie knocking it down to 140, the cop was very nice. Showed me their radar equipment and zapped a few cars and bikes with me in the car - point was that we didn't stand a chance! So to end my great weekend I have a $510 fine, 50 more points ( prior to January I had none in 20 years! ) and a suspended licence for 28 days effective immediately. Cop calls for a towie for me as there's no cellphone coverage.

So heed those warnings about about SH16 guys!!

I attempt walking to higher ground, got a text off to one of the others, but unable to ring anyone else. 20 mins later two of our group arrive on one bike, one to pillion me back to Kaukapakapa and the other to ride my bike back. Had to wait for the towie to arrive or the cop to come back just so they know that I didn't ride home, and to pay the towie for the callout. So we get back to Kaukapapa, where one of the others had gone home and been pillioned back so we had enough "licensed" riders for bikes. To make a long story short, the guys went well out of their way to help me out. I'd mention names but they may not want to be associated with this event!!

So thanks waiting around, and for the ride home guys!!

So now I have a 29 hour old GSX-R600, that I can't ride for 28 days...... ( Looking at the bright side, at least I didn't bin it.....)

Anyone know about applying for license to get to work and back?

Do you have a bus stop in your street? If so you're probably screwed unless you have disabled dependants, a partner with no license, or a really compelling story.

PM Grahamheeboy and ask him how he got his.

Bugger about the license though man. Really easy to do those sorts of speeds on a sprotsbike.

EDIT: Mint bike btw bro, those blue wheels are just horn...Suzuki really got the classic colours right this year.

Oh well...actually not too bad losing the license, I work close to home so can get dropped off and picked up etc..... I don't need to drive as part of work either so no biggie. Points worry me though....

We had been warned...... it was just too easy to do!! ( while overtaking especially ) Thought I'd post the thread as a warning too.

Yeah.. I had an awesome ride on that fine Tuesday, came back and put a deposit on a 750, but when I found out about the demo 600 at Haldanes at $13500 I decided that would probably be best for me, being a newish rider too.

Gutted.. nice bike. Want me to keep it running for ya?

ps... it wasn't that ginger tosser was it?

Two of the guys have ridden it now - earlier I didn't want to swap bikes this time being it's first real ride (maybe I should have! )

Bugger. That smarts, brand new bike and can't ride. If this ticket doesn't take you passed the magic 100 demerits then you should only have an instant fine plus the immediate 28 day suspension. After that you should be allowed to ride again (my understanding anyway). Or do you have to go to Court with this ticket?

I got busted on Woodcocks Road today - 130km/h, was going faster but my radar slowed me down a "few" clicks - cop admitted as much. Despite giving me the ticket he was quite pleasant. He even warned me about the guy that clocked you which was nice. I saw you standing at the side of the road and thought you must have got a suspension.

Shit happens - it's all a revenue gathering and PR exercise anyway. The cops don't seem to take speeding very seriously. If they did, they could make life a lot tougher.

Bet you thought about doing a runner though eh? ;-)

Take the gravel roads, I clock over 140 on some of them heading up to Wellsford.

Otherwise, its common knowledge now, DON'T SPEED ON SH16.

Sorry to hear about the Leon, I hope you have a long drive way to ride up and down.

Ixion
17th July 2006, 00:16
Please don't. 140kph is too fast on those roads, they are local roads with farmers doing all sorts of farmer stuff.

If lots of bikers start blasting up and down them at unneccesary speeds and frightening the locals, they (the locals) will have Mr Plod there as well. Exactly as has happened with SH16. Mr Plod was happy to leave us alone for years until some people went over the top. You now see the result.

I find most local's pass me on a farm bike on one wheel without a helmet and in their gumboots.

There are a lot of long straights with no houses/drive ways or visual obscurities where 140 or more is quite sensible if you are comfortable with it.

SH16 is only picked on because of its popularity and the Police can justify the extra attention given the increase in motorcycle related accidents, which is a result of the increase in popularity.

If lots of bikers start blasting up and down them

Despite what anyone says, gravel roads are never going to be popular with bikers in general.

Just like Knives's, Speed isn't dangerous; it is how you use it that makes it dangerous.

Oh man that BLOWS. I have to be super careful out there myself, I have to drive as part of my business and don't want to lose my licence. Seen heaps of lost licences on here from people who for want of a better description victims of the cop coffers. I feel the police are trying to make as many of our members into lessons for the rest of us and thats wrong.

Most of the lost licences around here are from people much like yourself leong and generally have little to no demerits before hand.

Be careful out there all!

yeah its a shame that, next time just beat your wife or your kids, hell rob a supermarket or punch someone in the street, you likely to get off much lighter than a month not being able to drive and $510 plus 50 demerits!

It amuses me that speeding has such harsh penalties compared to some other crimes in NZ.

Thing is normal sensible 100km all day sorts of riders are getting their licenses removed for passing in a safe manner, its utter rubbish the cops spouting on about danger at a quick burst over a 100 to pass a car, have the heard of Time Exposed to Danger (TED) ??? When passing without passing lanes it is best to reduce TED as this is what is likely to actually kill causing a head on if someone passses lethargically, but no cops ping ya and destroy your life for passing in a safe and sensible manner. Could they use descretition? yes.....do they?? no , as they have their precious little qouta.

Just like income tax, speed tax affects those in the middle the most. The poor/slow don't pay bugger all tax, in fact many poor get kickbacks on it! The rich/fast pay bugger all tax. The rich have structures in place to avoid/minimise their tax liability. While the fast just bugger off.

And what's left in the middle is the good kiwi bloke/blokess. They work hard, they pay their bills on time, they pay their taxes fair and square, and they stop for cops when they're busted doing nothing. They get the $510 fines, the 50 demerit points, the points adding up to a 3 month suspension, the insurance hassles...

Leong, don't forget to advise your insurance company for both cars and bike. You might not want to hear what they have to say, but you have a legal obligation to advise them. You don't want someone to knick the bike out of your garage next week and then have to explain your irresponsible hooliganish driving history.

All this talk about SH16 has got me going. Haven't been on it for a while so have organised a ride this Sat 22nd.

Meet at Shell Westgate 9:00am sharp. If you've got slicks, put em on. If you've got a plate, take it off. This will be one of my medium paced rides so make sure your bike can average 220 kph. We'll stop off at Cowcop for a quick drinking game and the longest wheelie outta the pub gets an ounce. We'll then up the pace a bit to Wellsford where we'll have a liquid lunch and then demonstrate our stunt skills to the locals on the main road.

Ride safe and remember to look out for children.

Local knowledge would certainly help, but distractions at the wrong time ie overtaking don't. Also if that car wasn't there I would have seen the brake lights of the bike ahead. I never said anything about juvenile shit, you are just taking things out of context and applying emotion to form an invalid opinion.

An invalid opinion?

Could you please remove your head from your arse before you suffocate. The oxygen deprivation appears to be affecting you somewhat detrimentally already, fuckhead.

Leong, don't forget to advise your insurance company for both cars and bike. You might not want to hear what they have to say, but you have a legal obligation to advise them.

Completely forgotten about this.... hope they take into account my claims history then...... Thanks!.

Hey Leong, nice bike, shit luck!! So was the SV not what you were after? I'm not sure that you will stiing behind me on the next track day with that machine!!!

Yes, it sure has more horsepower, not far off double!! And too much for me so it seems! Only got the SV cos it's supposed to be a good learners or second bike, was never really comfortable on it. This one fits me much better. Cheers

If it was just after 3:00 and you were the bikes that gave me a funny look when I flashed you as I approached in the car....Ha Ha

Pinged at 15.38 apparently, so probably not us.... I always wave to guys that flash at me... whether they're warning me or telling me off!!!

Yes he does, amongst others.

Argh, yeah I got pulled by him. Gave it a blat on to the motorway, then backed down to 100 and ducked behind the fairing 'cos it was freezing cold. I couldn't see my mirrors, and when I saw a red glow around me, it was obvious that he was sitting 6 inches from my ass, plate seen. Dry roads, no traffic, I was gutted.

Nice enough guy, dropped it to just below licence losing territory, but I'd have thought he'd have more sympathy than that, riding a Gix1100 'n all...oh well, all in the past :p

I don't mean to sound like a CUNT but why do people speed and expect sympathy from a cop who also rides? If you speed you should accept responsibility for your actions - do a runner or pull over and take it like a lady!

The only times I have been given sympathy from a cop were for stupid things, such as L plate and carrying a pillion.

I don't expect sympathy when I knowingly speed.

And if anyone says they need to hit over 140 kmp/h to pass safely is full of shit, look at all the 250 rides or 150 riders who can pass easily without going over 120 - 130.

Not that I said that, but in third gear on even a 600 let alone a thou, at nowhere near full throttle 140+km/h comes up way faster that you dare imagine if you've only ridden a 250cc bike.... (like my VTR250)

Some peoples' definition of stupid things extends to doing 200kph down a deserted highway with risk factors (parked cars, pedestrians, lack of visibility, road condition, etc.) at zero...hence some sympathy expected...but hey, no tears here...

I'd much rather pass at 140 and be done with 300m of clear road in front of me than do it at 110, and be by the car's front wheel as some wanker in a Subaru (or on a sportsbike) comes around the corner at 200 and gives me a second to react and a second to get the fuck outta the way...kinda logical really, the wrong side of the road is a bit mroe dangerous.

Bummer for the 28 days suspension and for the $$$$!
Had a plesant ride home from my first day at work today, 102 km and it took me less than 40 minutes.... The irony is that in Auckland I was 35km from work and it was at least a 45 minute commute, sometimes an hour and a half in rush hour traffic!

Take care out there

You ever ridden a big bike??

$2.XX on one of the modern inline 600's or 750 feels like 120 on my 2fiddy.

You have to physically look at your speedo to realise how fast you're going and the acceleration is so smooth the speed can easily creep up on you.

It's very easy to get tricked.

Sorry to hear what happened Leong however if you still feel like two wheels go see Grahaeme at Bike Barn on Botany road - he did another KB'er and me an unbelievable deal on some high quality mountain bikes.

On our Il4 250's its still quite easy and yes I'd rather pass at a higher speed than not sit around all day. Obviously SH1 towards dargaville isn't he best place for that.....

JSG, yes I have ridden a few and understand what they are capable of.

My point is that if you know your bike is going to easily do over 140 kmp/h without you noticing, then you are knowingly exceeding the speed limit when you do go over.

In which instance, why should the Police offer sympathy?

I'd much rather pass at 140 and be done with 300m of clear road in front of me than do it at 110, and be by the car's front wheel as some wanker in a Subaru (or on a sportsbike) comes around the corner at 200 and gives me a second to react and a second to get the fuck outta the way...kinda logical really, the wrong side of the road is a bit mroe dangerous.

Then do it! I'm not saying that you shouldn't, I'm just pointing out that you don't need to and - should you choose to - then when you do get a speeding ticket, what is the point in having a gripe over it?

EDIT: Just for the morons that will jump onto this thread and think when I say "you" I am making a personal "I fucked your mum" reference, I am not, I'm just talking generally. I'm frustrated how people get shitty over speeding tickets. And this has no reference to you Leon (any of my previous posts).

Lou Girardin
18th July 2006, 08:31
To all those going on about deserving a ticket everytime you exceed the limit, would you also be happy to be pinged for not indicating for 3 secs on EVERY occasion.
Or being ticketed for failing to stop on an amber light on EVERY occasion.
Or failing to dip your headlight.
Or any of the dozens of offences that are normally ignored, on the road or otherwise.
BY saying that people deserve a ticket every time they exceed the limit is falling into the trap of believing speed kills.

SwanTiger
18th July 2006, 18:26
If you're frustrated by this then perhaps you shouldn't read posts/threads from people who buy bikes designed with a "own the racetrack" philosophy.

I said that I am frustrated by people who have a gripe, by definition meaning; "To complain naggingly or petulantly".

I've never said that I don't speed or that I think speeding is wrong, dangerous or otherwise.

My point is responsibility, if you choose to speed then accept the fact on occasion you will be caught and given a fine or loss of license and that is a consequence of your actions.

Yet, still, there are people who moan on about the Police being unfair and ill-focused on issuing tickets.

I'll leave it at that anyway, as usual people don't read and reflect objectively, instead it becomes a personal attack on them in their mind.

Leong
18th July 2006, 18:58

Actually, the guys that brought me and my bike home that night made themselves scarce :bye: when my wife came out to meet us, but she's been really great dropping me off at work and picking me up, though one of the girls at work lives close by and can help out about for half the time. I used to ride a CB250RS on the motorway. Top speed at full throttle was 120kmh if you got it just right, but a gust of wind would bring you down to 110. Going chch to picton for example it would do 110 and thats it.

So consequently I couldn't be a manic speeder and I overtook at 110. I guess therefore I would fall into your catergory 'look at all those who go slower'.

Too many motorists speed up when you try and overtake (we're talking even just 95 to 105 here don't ask about 90 to 110 :scooter:). At high speed you can spend less time in the wrong lane and give the person you're overtaking more room. Everyone wins. Even if they speed up on you, you're going fast enough that it doesn't matter.

So yes you can overtake even at 110 but lets just say I went and bought a fast bike after doing over 10,000km of 110kmh motorway riding with lots of speed uppers and related close calls. Consequently overtaking is a lot safer and stress free for me as I leave plenty of room for error:niceone:

common you know TJ. Tony Johnson who was on motorways.

he was a bike 6 foot 4 guy who was ex foreign legion. was a bike cop in his 40s and used to wear jodphurs with wire in between knees and hips to keep material out. just like the SS did
in ww2

used to write a new offence out every day.

in court he was asked one day 'Officer do you hate maoris" His reply was "No sir, I hate every one equally'

he once made a truckie take his shirt off and tie it to the back of a OD load as he never had a flag on it.

He was the guy that registered his EH holden car in his baby girls name and got heaps of parking and ACC could do SFA as she was not legally responsible. appeared on Holmes programme. Holmes asks him what his superiors think of all this and he answers " I have no superiors' he did like taking the piss

Come on Lou he was ya mentor and hero, and know ya don't rememebre him.

are u sure demetia is not setting in.

thos ewere the days when men wheer men and took there punishment, not like these whinng little toerags these days whom think that only the scum should be picked on.

Yeah, I remember him. I was in the job well before he came along. One car was in his dogs name though, he heard Bungay had done it so he copied him.
I was with him one night when he took a recalcitrant SAS guy down with the dreaded double nostril hold.
He and his partner had a ferret which got all playful one morning and bit his knob. He reckoned the thing was the Orvil Wright of ferrets after that.
If half of what he said he'd done was true, he was a double hard bastard.
What's he up to now?
Eating babies?
