Looking for some info about getting an exemption

Hey guys, well Ive heard alot of different stories regarding applying for/getting an exemption for a bigger bike, cause the old 250 is getting a bit small for me and I dont think I can wait till mid next year before I can go for my full! I was talking to Callum at Mt Eden said that all you need to do is write in a pretty nice letter to the ltsa (i think?) asking for one and giving reasons, which is no problem.. (he said that Gremlin got one to get his zx7r) but Im just curious about demerits, Ive got a few, 2 tickets on the bike and 1 in the work car so Im pretty sure that the answer would be no but has anyone managed to get it with demerits?

also the back up is taking the defensive driving course and knocking it down to 12 months and just waiting it out... so heres the part that I dont know, do I need to re-do my defensive driving course for my bike (cause I did it for the car and used my certificate for my car full) if I do that blows cause you would have to sit though another painfully boring course and blow another bucket of cash on it tooooooooo.

Search the forums- it's been discussed heaps before.

However, I suspect you are right- very little chance really. When I worked at LTNZ cc exemptions weren't often granted to young folks; as far as I could tell, if you had extensive off road bike and also car driving experience and a good record there was more of a possibility. Other reason often cited was that the rider was exceptionally big: however, the guy making the decision will have extensive knowledge on what bikes are out there and are suitable for your size.

Also, when the accelerated license was still going, I believe that any demerits at all meant you were ineligible for the scheme? So.... hmmm.

They do take account of your driving record. Basically, you have to be able to show that you are a safe careful mature driver. Which is harder if you have demerits.

Basicaly, the question you need to address is : "There are thousands of people out there on restricted licences. All of them would like to be exempted from the restrictions. The reason I'm so special that I should be exempted , whilst they are not is XXXX X"

And yes, a defensive driving certificate can be used only once. Which does suck, and it's not actauly a legal thing, it's a procedural thing by the LTSA.

you also need to pay $22 and fill out a Exemption form called a DL4

I did the CBTA restricted and full with current demerits, a hell driving history and a 400cc bike. Yes, it surprised me too, but at least it meant one less ticket I was eligible for.

dont know shit bout the exemption, but if you gonna do the defensive driving way you need to re do it for the bike. gay, but true.

Ixion is part right. Your biggest issue is to prove that you will be no less safe on a bigger bike. I pointed out it was more dangerous for me to be on a smaller bike...

As for demerits, I can't help there, I don't have any.
