I love the smell of fat pipes in the morning.
Just got my home ADSL connection going and I can definitely recommend it as an improvement on the dialup experience. Hoooooo, yuss. Now the only times of the day when I am not a few mouse-clicks away from high-speed online access will be during my commute.
$40 a month for 256kbps isn't too bad, either.
What connection flavours are you guys using, then?

Have had Jetstream for almost a year now and on the few occasions I've had to use dial-up again I've found it very frustrating. My son installed the ADSL and a router for 4 computers, as well as all the software and I have no idea how it all works so if anything goes wrong and he's not there I'm stuck. (But guess who got the glamour job of crawling under the house to run the cables??!!)

All my trawling is done at work .... No interweb at home for me.

I have a cable modem at work, dialup at home though.

I'm on cable at home, 2Mb download which mean you can suck down 1Mb every 4 seconds at top speed. It's about $50/month.

We've got a very fast connection at work (was a microwave link, but is now running over copper) where I do almost all my interwebbing, but at home we've had ADSL for yonks. We've swapped ISPs a few times, due to data caps etc., and we're currently with ihug. Pretty good, but the "broadband" we get here is slow and overpriced c.f. the rest of the world.
One day we'll have real broadband and competitive pricing....

... which is precisely why I bought an ADSL router that also works as an 802.11g base station. Wireless networking is your friend ;)

I'm kinda in the same boat as you. My brother got an adsl modem, and since he's the computer techie person in my family, he's got the modem and gateway box in his room, and my computer and the family computer (when it was working... another story) are connected through a network.
We recently upgraded to a 256kb connection and it is soo coool :)

802.11g means nothing to me, but wireless networking sounds like a good idea. I wonder why my son didn't suggest it...

Maybe he's like my son (electronic/computer genius that he is) - for technical reasons, like reliability or summat.
(That and the fact he got the router and other hardware for free...)
Yeah I know what you mean. I used to have 10mbit but now I just have 128k jetstart, still good enough. But when I go home in the holidays etc I can't handle dialup, damn is it slow.

Welcome to the interweb thingy JR, glad you could join us.
Wats dial-up ?
FYI
Your 256 (upstream I think, and 128 DS) is not really broadband.
that speed, or lack of speed, is not classed as broadband.
You and I are being ripped by telescum. And now that the local loop isnt being unbundled, it wont get any better in the near future. :crybaby:
I only pay $25 a month for jetstream.
the joys of living in Welly, a place thatTelescum has competition.
Wireless = NO
Maybe when its better, no good for games. :2guns:

I know. It's still a helluva lot better than dialup, but yes, I can feel myself being ripped off.

Indeed. I'm not a regular gamer, but the latency problems were a primary reason for not using wireless.

2 Mb/s Saturn cable modem. 2 meg down, 1/2 meg up. 5G of traffic a month. SOmething like $50-$60/mo.
Being in IT and gaming I've had ADSL since '99 back when we use to get the full 8Mbps instead of the crappy 256/512k deals they have these days.
External routers/modems are also way more secure than dialup and act as a firewall by default so you don't have to worry about PCs on your network getting raped by the latest MS vulnerability viruses before you get a chance to patch them. Also don't have to arse around with personal firewalls that seem to break more than they fix.
Wireless is perfect for people that don't want to run cables all over their house. Just make sure that it is secured properly otherwise the whole neighbourhood will be laughing at your expense.

Well done! The only problem with ADSL is when you find yourself somewhere using a 56k modem your patience will be most demanding!
We have been using it for several years now and will NEVER go back to dialup...thought about a satellite connection a few times too, only thought though. Prices hopefully will continue to drop with such connections.
$40- does that include both ISP & Telecom charges? We pay more like $70 per month. :brick:

$40 is ISP (Xtra) and Telecom charges for 256k with a 1Gb cap. Xtra is still $70 for ISP+telco with all-you-can-eat 256k.

Cable all the way here baby. :Punk:
Oh and incase you dsl 256kers didn't read the small print, yes it is unlimited connection. But the 256k speed is limited to your first 10GB (incl nat and intl), after that you're clocked down to dialup speeds. Although I did hear that this wasn't happening yet as Telecon has failed to impliment the necessary software.
Unfortunately I don't have the extra $$$ atm to take advantage of TelstraClear's 10Mb/10GB plan. But believe me I'll be hitting it as soon as the income can support it.

Eh ? What do you do on the wk'ends then ?
Next you'll be suggesting that you go outside in the SUN :thud:
You Jaffas get majorly ripped for ADSL pricing. My $25 or watever it is, (under $30) is for both my ISP and jetstream costs.

It is actually downloading live video - hence the striped drives. Mainly music Vids - but the odd adult vid seems to get through every now and again
I’m known as MrNetworker (Son in the Family) by everyone I know, Have 2 Desktops, 4 Servers, Laptop, Wireless Setup and Print Server. House is wired up with bloddy Network cables everywhere :killingme
I’m currently doing CCNA and CCNP Cisco courses at MIT as well as Seting up a Gameing LAN (www.Aucklan.dynu.com)
I have 256k 10Gb ADSL Internet connection as its a huge improvement over anything else. I use Manxet as my ISP as it allows me to host servers over my Internet Connection.
I have just changed over to 256k from 128k, which I have been using for over a year now and even then it doesn’t compare. I dont know how people can put up with slow Internet espically with these huge bandwidth intensite websites around now. I needed the extra bandwidth for my website and email services I have @ www.computec.dynu.com
256k was only 8 bucks more for me that 128k so i changed over..
Stupid (Good) thing is that 256k is meant to get capped at 10Gb of data but last month I used 27gb worth of data at full Speed...Good for those movies and Star trek Enterprise Series downloading on DC++.. Oh and also downloading pics of BikePics.com :msn-wink: . Apparently telecom hasn’t got the technology to cap data to 56k speeds after you go to 10Gb so im happy at the moment, Making the most of it while im uncapped. :yeah: :yeah: :yeah:

What are you going to do when u get capped at 10gb @ 56k speeds????
Shit the max I have got on both 128k was 32Gb and I thought that was good..
You must have download alot of Movies that month ... Do you use DC++ or Something else or was it just porn :2thumbsup

I really feel for you guys when you start getting capped.
But then again I've got no sympathy for xtra customers. There are always alternatives, and being a monopoly Telecom will NEVER improve their service unless they have to.
Some of you Aucklanders may want to check out Wired Country. They were one of the first in the country to offer a 1Mb plan.
In Wellington, well you guys have no excuse, there's Cable galore and NZ Wireless (Mb intl, xMb nat, NO cap).
