View Full Version : Fire Engine takes out 4x4 in Hams

I work at the top of Collingwood St in Hams near the lake.
A Firetruck was trying to get out of the intersection.....typically noone seems to notice a bright red truck with flashing lights and sirens, he gradually pulls out but a 4x4 tries to go around him (coming from his right). He misjudges the speed at which the 4x4 goes past (or the 4x4 brakes as it is slightly over the centreline and oncoming traffic may have startled the driver), Firetruck pulls out and bam, hits the 4x4 in the RH Passenger rear door and flips it on its roof. Infant in a child seat and other kids onboard, everyone seems to be fine.
Very impressive and just shows how unstable 4x4's can be......and how crap cage drivers are.
If a cage driver can't see something as huge as a firetruck with flashing lights/sound.....what hope is their for a bike rider?

I don't think so Bob. I've got the best of both worlds: the freedom of motorcycling and SUV superiority. When I'm in the SUV its get outta my way!!! Unless I see a bike though... but not students on scooters. They're too far down the food chain.

Yep, have to say 4x4's handle like shit. Was following a Rav4 on the motorway a few years ago, and they were following too close. The traffic started slowing down. Not too rapid or anything, and the Rav4 just fully locked up the brakes and didn't get off them. The kept skidding until the Rav was sitting twisted around 90 degress facing sideways but still in the lane. Very unstable vehicles especially in the wrong hands.

Shame there was a infant in there.

But it makes you wonder. If thats how they drive with a child in there,

think about how they would drive without their precious child.....

there are some fucken retards out there.

To be honest if you get hit by a fire truck FFS you deserve to be hit by a fire truck!

Sounds more like a case of blam the idiot behind the wheel, to simple to point the finger at the vehicle
And it's most likely a suburban puddle jumper & has never seen 4wd territory.

My 70series Cruiser is biker friendly, but has a thorough dislike for tintops:doobey:

Let's get one thing straight. A Rav4 IS NOT AN SUV!!! To qualify as an SUV it has to have a V8, weight over 2800 kg's and above all it has to be BIG and MENACING.

Rav4... pfffft. As for those Pajero's. Gimme a break. 0 - 100 by christmas.

Yup FireFights Right , Unfortunatly for the driver of the Appliance involved(big word for "Fire Truck") He will be judged at fault for failing to give way to his right.
Red lights and sirens do not give us the right to run red lights or drive through stop signs etc.
We May go through red lights and controlled intersections but certain conditions apply, like speed restrictions, and only if the way is clear.
The cage driver did nothing wrong and does not have to give way unless they have to give way to the right or theres a stop stop sign/red light.
Its up to us as the drivers of fire trucks to get the crew to the incident safely, and there fore makes us responsible for any decisions to proceed through red lights or stop signs or anything else that is required to get to the incident as quick as possible.
Mind you its amazing the amount of cars etc that pass you on the way to a call only to be held up in traffic further up the road whilest you whizz down the wrong side of the road and pass them again.

You missed out the - the driver has to have a brain the size of a sunflower seed and drive like a complete retard, oh and it has to be so unbalanced that on gusty days on harbour bridge, they would flip over the side and get rid of the brainless fucktards that drive them.

I think the RAV4 qualifies on all of the bits I've listed though.

Have to say I almost took out a fire truck the other day in Hamilton, I had the green and was going through it , next thing a fire truck was right on me, He came through from the left going through a very definate red, I swear he didnt have his siren going until he was going through the intersection, he braked hard, as did I, but I ended up going through.
I felt really stink but there is no freckin way he had his siren on and I had no distractions in the car so I would have clearly heard it.
I think the guy might have forgot to whack the siren on and made a bit of a Phoopa. either way Im surprised I didnt see him as I am usually on to it on the old scanning front.
Just goes to show, we all suck at driving at times no matter what clothes you wear

Yup Quasi It happens to the best of us, I my self have failed to notice a bright red truck untill the last minute,And yes flashing Lights, sirens, and horns are supposed to be used as warning devices to alert people to the fact that the 12 and a half tonne bright red thingimajig wants to go somewhere in an awful hurry(more n likely to get morning tea for those crash rescue guys from the airport ;) anyways all warning devices must be used 100 metres before any hazard/danger intersections etc so as to give ample warning.

I noticed a car parked under the back of a unit on the North-western M/way a couple of weeks ago, it didn't look very happy either. Anyone know what happened?

Was it a woman on the school run?

Yeah pretty sure it was.......typical :)

The "Appliance" had to stop. One of the others screamed past, but came back about 15 minutes later....probably another false alarm.

Yeah, Fire Appliance was on its way to an accident and travelling at 100 kmph or there abouts, when a boy racer type car , which must have been going a hell of a lot faster decided to park in into the rear of the appliance apparently it took the appliance driver about 400 metres to come to a stop.
There were 3 passengers in the car if i remember right and all went to hospital with 2 of them critical.
As to what happened next I`m not sure.

Actually I dont Know that one sorry but if i remember right then yes i think that no one has the right to go through any controlled intersection wether they police fire or ambo, one of the Police officers from the site may be able to enlighten us.
I think the rule is MAY which is different from will, shall ,can etc etc.
I always err on the side of caution , if i have to stop because some one else wont then so be it, no point getting upset about it, after all we volunteer and can be prosecuted so sometimes it aint worth the hassle.
Like I say to the drunks who complain that we wernt there quick enough, yup and you aint rescued yet so be quiet or well go home and you can get yourself out...after all you got yourself into this mess.

No it doesn't... there is a specific charge for cop cars only of "Patrol vehicle fails to avoid colision while proceeding against a red light." $150 pingers!

Even the Police have got onto the popular bandwagon of dispersing personal responsibilty to other unrelated objects/persons.

I.E. "It's YOUR fault I'm going to lose my licence and job for drink driving" when processing a pissed driver.

Slow sideswipe or full on head on at speed... hmmmmm.... maybe that's why there's a difference...
