View Full Version : Kids, bikes and setting an example - Dilemma!

So, you’ve parked your bike outside a shop, come out and there are two kids around 10yrs old admiring your bike….
“see, it’s a 750”
“bet it goes fast”
“better than a gixxer”
Etc etc

Ask the said kids if they like bikes (duh), and get asked the question “Does it go fast”…… Followed by, “can you take off fast when you go?”

Dilemma..., do you

a) fuel the kids passion for bikes by saying “hell yeah, it’s really quick” and do a wheelie down the road,
b) say it goes ok, but only on the track (wink) and take off fast but not fast enough to lose your licence,
c) say it goes fast then take off like a nana, or
d) tell them motorcycling is about riding, not going fast.

The first two are surely irresponsible :innocent:, and the last two are likely to have no positive impression on the kids at all.....

What should one do? [Edit:] in the middle of the town centre....

You must ask your self why you own such a bike if you dont know that the answer is always A, except in the option of E, give the kid the finger while on the back wheel.

A, it could be the best thing that happens to them :)
Everyone loves wheelies except the bacon

Definately A/ or failing that a f00kin good rolling burnout always impresses the lil buggers :blip:

Say it goes fast and take off quick with a gentle power wheel up.
But not too quick that everyone think's you're a wanker.

and you could always show that it 'stops really well' by pulling a stoppie..

Kids love it, the ones next door are waiting by the road by the time i get out the drive....
"MR, DO A WHEELIE......PLEEEEEEASE!!!!"
apparently as i ride away they call "COME BACKKKK"
I recon they have the bug ;)

I'd say A, but that means I'd probably end up stalling it an looking like a dick... so a more reserved B would be my answer.

I'm with Dooly on this one - although at that age they're not gonna know you're being a wanker. Everyone with a flash bike is cool.

None of the above - You say nothing to them...stay cool, calm and nonchalant, but you make a big show of getting your gear on,make the starting proceedure extremely complicated (they are watching all this, absolutely riveted to your every action). When you finaly take off,you let loose just a little excitement...I reckon the most impressive is just to realign your bike to the exit by spinning the wheel up a tad and turning the bike a bit, then you can take off, very restrained with the front wheel an inch off the deck. The impression is this bike is extremely powerful, and you just casualy release just a fraction of it's potential - they will think you a God.

And I am.

OH so you think that's a hard question eh?? :wait:

Now try it except your riding a 150cc.

Whatta you do then?

A) Claim that the bike is fast, then take off as fast as it goes

B) Say that it's just had a engine rebuild and you cant give it full beans. Then proceed to take off as fast as the bike can

C) own up that the bike is slow. but still take off as fast as possible

D) tell them that the bike is slow, but check out how fast it stops :blip:

Colapop

None of those are correct - they're never gonna ask a 150 rider!! :nya:

Yep, Dooly's got ot right. We've all been in that situation, but here's a question - who gets the biggest rush, the kids or your ego.

Also for all but I few I'd guess that pulling a big wheelie could end in looking like a wanker when you stuff it up. :nya:

I've taken a few kids as pillion on my bikes over the years and 50kmph seems fast to them, so option C would be my choice. We may feel like we're riding off like a nana but to most kids we're the rulers of the road!!

Funny how some of the guys who chose option A couldn't pull an impressive wheelie to save themselves, and a street magic don't count!
