View Full Version : Poseurs who can’t ride...

I was driving to work this morning (in Hamilton) and I found myself behind a guy on a red Suzuki Cruiser (Intruder?) at the Norton Road roundabout.

The first thing that I noticed were his nice new Johnny Reb Boots - I figured he was going the whole Ican'taffordaharleyandpretendthatevenifIcouldIwoul dn'thaveone stichk.

As he rode off from the Give Way, I noticed that he dragged his feet for 10 or 15 feet, THEN he put one down on the corner (doing all of 20km/h) and then dragged them 20 feet into the traffic lights. When the light turned green, he kept one foot just off the road half way down London Street.

If you are this person - GET SOME TRAINING!!! IF YOU CAN'T BALANCE A BIKE WITH A SEAT THAT LOW YOU ARE GOING TO DIE! This is of no consequence to me personally, other than the fact that dorks like you increase the ACC levies and support the public opinion that bikes are dangerous.

As far as I could see you were wearing $1500 worth of gear, much of that spent protecting a head that obviously has NO clue...spend some on rider training.

/rant over - normally servce resumed.

Not a hard thing to do. I personally wear $1700 worth of gear, and it isn't exactly a selection of top-notch stuff either.

But jeepers, he sounds like an accident waiting to happen. Probably a BAB.

What surprised me was that he wasn't wearing the compulsary black gear and open face - he had a reasonable jacket on and a good helmet.

BTW - WTF is BAB?

Born Again Biker.

A term for oldish guys who haven't ridden bikes for a couple of decades. Seems to be restricted to the male of the species. The kids leave home and he wanders out one day and puts a FXDWGBSTFL and a tasselled jacket on the credit card.

What's even scarier is when you get the Wanna Go Fast flavour of BAB who wander out and put an R1 on the card. I believe we discussed them recently under a link posted re. the situation in the UK.

Ahhh yes I have encounter the WGF variety of the BAB. Guys who used to own a Honda 750/4 (which made ?45horse power) in 1973, and figure they got nuthin' beter to do than plonk $$$'s down on a VTR or CBR or summat....

Well...as a more " mature" rider myself I take deep offence :bash:

I have to admit there's more than a bit of truth in the comments made though....as someone whose last road bike brefore being " re-born" was a z1000 Mark2 ,I thought a few years ago how hard can it be to ride a ZZR1100 (only 100cc bigger) ......gulp

A truly sphincter loosening experience followed and I, greatly humbled (not to mention scared s**tless) realised technology had moved along somewhat in the intervening 20 odd years. Several less intimidating bikes followed and several track days as well. I know now that I don't have the same reflexes as a a younger guy, and I don't push the boundaries too much. It's supposed to be about having fun after all, and I don't worry about being overtaken by some spotty fearless youth on an RG250 as I once might have....

But I would NEVER EVER buy a tasselled jacket, and anyway my bum is not wide enough and belly not fat enough to ride a Harley yet......

Nah, this guy needed trainer wheels.
You should be able to sit stationary for a couple of seconds with your feet on the pegs.

I wonder who teaches them that? maybe the same ones who teach people to drive shuffling the steering wheel - oh man that looks dangerous, but some pen pusher has read a study.....

Well, I was a little surprised. Thank goodness (or God/Satan/Allah) for leathers and kneepads. Oh yeah - and those stupid heavy-duty stainless steel mufflers (made by Sankei, y'know) that Honda fit to FireStorms.

The funniest one was when I was sneaking between stopped cars and parked cars, and bumped the parked Volvo's mirror. The woman inside couldn't do anything, so she knocked on the window at me.

I made a free weekend for a change - why don't you guys make a mess of it,I'll PM my contact details.

I sometimes do this in the wet, especially after filling up, as the bottom of my boots get real slippery and dont grip the pegs until they have had a little scrubbing.

Considering the number of people getting their nuts in a bunch about having their bikes interefered with in another thread, I find the cavalier attitude about dinging other peoples' cars kind of dissapointing. And you wonder why cagers have no time for bikes...

Excuse me?
Firstly, I didn't contribute any whingeing to the thread about bikes being interefered with, and secondly, I didn't ding anyone's car.
I knocked (quite gently, I was doing MUCH LESS than walking speed) the mirror of the Volvo with my mirror, probably not even hard enough to knock it out of alignment.
I wasn't amused at the fact that I'd damaged someone's car and they were powerless to do anything about it, I was amused by the woman's excited and impotent banging on her window. What message she was trying to convey, I have absolutely no idea.
"Hey - get away from my car!"?
"You are naughty riding past this traffic jam!"?
"Help me - I'm trapped in this car and can't get out!"?
"You look like a big handsome biker - come and have sex with me in my boring box of a car."?

It certainly wasn't, "You have dinged my car! Do not ride away from me, displaying a cavalier attitude to my property, you bounder!"
