Does anyone here on KB do any Fire Dancing or Fire Play of any type?

A friend of mine does that fire spitting thing, where you put the liquid in your mouth and spit it out to make a huge flame... she said she would teach me...

But I also want to do fire dancing... but I can't find any equipment that I like the look of...

So far I've found this:

http://www.trademe.co.nz/Sports/Dancing-gymnastics/Other/auction-63097822.htm

If anyone watches Survivor Exile Island, there was a fire dancing chick on there, and she had similar tools as the above, except hers looked like little cups and not cloth...

Any tips, ideas or suggestions?

All you need is wood and matches, once the coals are ablaze take your shoes and socks off and you get the drift. Dancing becomes a natural phenomenon!

I've also found the fire juggling sticks... but I suck at juggling... so thats out.

I've also found those long sticks that you twirl around, but that makes me feel like a cheerleader so not really into that either...

Yeah I'm not into that shit either, just changed channels and saw her flinging them around without fire in them and the other survivors bitching about it for some reason...

But those little cup things are what I want...

A few years back I made my own Fire stick. Basicly it was a Broom handle cut a bit shorter and then aluminium tube banged on the end. Screw that on and then attach the Material on to the end, that way the flames were not burning the broom. Material well you could use denim if you like but it doesnt last as long but cheap! You can pick up the proper stuff at Cosmic Corner in Cuba st in welly so find something similar that sells all the herbals and pretty lights and bong accessories etc.

Fire Poi's well my brother made me a set nice and simple. was a small aloy pipe for the material to be wrapt around. a keey ring attaching it to a large fishing swivel attached to a stainless cable (like a side stay on a yacht (he works at a boat shop). then simply another swivel and a webbing loop!

Fuel well I was using kero, which worked really well but it is best to have them soak overnight before you start using them. something about the material lasting longer. then just a really short soak each time after that.

If you are fire breathing Kero does work but there are usually other chemicals to stop people drinking it in there. But you can buy it from shell some how and it doesnt have the nasties in it. Only comes in 20litre drums so that hard for idiots to get hold of.

Yeah I'm just going to make my own, Sam works in a leather factory, so I've asked her to get some leather for the handles, I'm sure I'll have no problem getting the chain bits from somewhere (warehouse, mitre10 or somewhere).

To start off with I won't play with the fire, not until I've got the moves all sorted... then I'll worry about the fabric and fuel to use...

...you should be about right for 'The Gathering' at new years...

They started that up again? I went twice, never saw a fight there due in no small part to their "no alcohol" policy combined with most people being on drugs - this was before the days of P. Down the hill in Nelson was a totally different story, 300 drunks in a trailer park (there's the giveaway right there) started a riot and trashed the place.

Funnily enough, we managed to get alcohol in there, I had poured vodka into pump bottles and strapped them to the outside of the pack rack on the back of the bike. We lanesplit to the front of the queue of cars getting searched, they security guards took one look at the gear piled up on our bikes (and the pump bottles were in full view the whole time) and just waved us through. Gotta love bikes at times like that. Those in cars had to queue for hours, then completely empty everything out of their vehicles and allow security to go through the lot.

And you're right - there were a heap of fire dancers there. The first time I went (NYE 2000) was without doubt the best party I have ever been to, in spite of the rain. Wouldnt go to another now though, it was too commercial for my liking and you'd get a heap of hopped up P heads that would be worse than people drinking in my opinion.

Firebreathing aint too hard, unless you want to be real good, that takes skill.

You need a firestick, some kerosene, and milk.

Drink some milk, kind of buffers the stomach. Can help to put vaseline etc on lips and chin (kero dries the skin real bad)

Practise with water first, just a little water, maybe 15 to 30 mls?
You are trying to spray the water out of your mouth like steam, or to atomise it, like a perfume spray container. The finer the atomisation, the better the fireball is going to look like.

When you can do it comfortably and reliably with water, light up your firestick, swill some milk around your mouth, and drink a little too,
Then take a small amount of kero into mouth, spray it onto the (lit) firestick.

The rest is just practice.

Warning, you may singe hair, get a disgusting taste in your mouth, wake up witha crook guts, go to sleep witha crook guts etc.

After I have done it, I usually rinse my mouth out a heap of times with milk. It doesn't take much swallowed to give you a gutache for 10 hours or so.

So think if you really want to do it before you do.

Oh, and best done at night, then you can see your fireballs.

Sorry to drag up an old thread!

But last night, at our party, Speights_bud and his girlfriend turned up with the fire-poi gear. I had a go and it's not that hard. I'm really unco at times, and I didn't do too much damage. I just went straight into the flames. Was a heaps of fun, with minimal hair loss (arm and back of neck).

So, Placid, did you ever end up doing this? I'm borrowing Speights' practice poi's to get some moves done first. But an easy way to practice without fire is to use skipping ropes (cut in half, with something to loop your fingers through) with tennis balls (or some other not-so-heavy weight) on the end.

I'll keep you posted how I go. It's really addictive!

Got a little interested in fire eating thing. One seriouse bit of advice if you go down this road. Carry a towel and wipe the mouth every time you breath out fire. This is a precaution in case of any inflammable residue escapes from your mouth. I use to use kerosine. Not too sure what proffessionals use.

NEVER NEVER UNDER ANY CIRCUMSTANCES DO ANY FIRE EATING IF YOU HAVE THE HICCUPS OR ANY KIND OF INDEGESTION.

Other than that use your head.

There's a guy in Auckland Tim West that trains fire eaters etc.

I made a fire staff a while back. Just got a metal broom and used old rags on the ends. Dip them in kero and away you go. Was good fun and only burnt myself twice  Also tried steel wool on the ends which was rather intersting. Made a flaming wheel of death with showers of molten steel flying off the ends. Very amusing :Punk:

hXc
29th October 2006, 15:22
A metal broom handle?! Ouch!

A smarter thing to do would of been a wooden broom handle, with metal wrapped around each end. Then towel around the metal. That way, the heat doesn't transfer through the metal to your hands. Just make sure the towel (or other material) is far enough away from the wood.

Yeah it screws your wicks though. They don't last very long after using that stuff. So maybe you should have a set for coloured flames, and a set for normal flames.

Mmm, i read that. I was going to have a fiddle with fibreglass matting for the outside, and maybe a cotton core. Have you tried anything like that?
The staff has kevlar on it, so i dont really want to distroy that. I was thinking of just making some poi especially to play with the colored stuff :)

hXc
29th October 2006, 15:55
Do you do staff? I'm just starting poi, and don't have a set yet. Just using skipping ropes with tennis balls on the end to practice with. I'm gunna save up for a set though. Will probably end up getting 2 sets of kevlar wicks, and make a set of towel wicks. Then I'll just get some lengths of chain and cut them at different lengths, so I can try short poi and long poi. And just swap the wicks over.

Apparently the towel wicks burn longer, but they're useless after 2 or 3 burns.

Na doesnt get hot at all. Might get mildly warm at the ends but kero doesn't heat whatever its on very much. My mate had his hand on fire and didnt notice for about 5 seconds :gob:

When you're making the towel wicks make sure you wrap them really tightly. You need to soak them for a little longer but they seem to last for a few more burns. They also probably last longer if you re-dip them often instead of leaving for long burns as it will burn the fuel from the outside instead of getting the fuel inside which burns the outer cloth.

I had a cousin who was a fire dancer. That was until one day he got stoned before a performance and set fire to the curtains on the stage. It was really a site, when he did his whole "twirl the long stick burninn at both ends" thing. Then it's flying gracefully through the air where it becomes lodged on the curtains of the left of the stage. Thay must've been polyester, cos boy did they go up quick! Luckily there was a fire extinguisher handy.

I would avoid the ones you posted a pic of - if they wrap around you the chains can lock together which is not ideal with something that's on fire. Get a pair with a wire cable (like the inside of a bicycle brake cable). You can get them at:

Quite a few people do it... In Victoria Park in the evenings I've seen a group of people, maybe 6 of them playing with fire, some with the sticks, some with poi's and some with juggles and some breathing fire...

*can't wait to do it*
Hey mate this crew have moved their antics up to Basque reserve, it has been running for about 7 years. There are many more that 6 although as masny as 6 out at one time the rest all watching. Tuesdays night's from dark till whenever, fuel is provided $2-3 koha type donation to cover it. They use Pegasol rather than Kero but either is good.
Wicks: kevlar wick is the shit, if you have made your own buy some wick of my mates.
Chains: I don't recommend they are to easy to wrap around your arm. Better off with some thick steel cable ;)

Some of the best performers in NZ hang out at the Tuesday firenight. But its for beginners to experts.

Special christmas firenight on 26th December if your keen Basque reserve Auckland.

Make a wire basket on the end of your poi, and put in a few steelo pads, the ones with the very fine wire, not chunky goldilocks. Then soak in Kero as normal. Light, twirl, and WOW, amazing burning metal sparks flying in great arcs accross the darkness! The steelo totally burns up, and makes amazing trails of sparks like a catherine wheel. Very worth doing.

Oh, If you want colours with your fire-poi or stick, you can crush up some Copper Sulphate and add it to the Kero, and you get cool green flames. Add barium and get red flames. I can't remember what the blue flames were caused by.

I still havn't done the fire dancing thing since I posted this thread, got Sam to make me some poi's at her work (cause I'm a cheap ass) and they were too heavy and blah... but I'm still keen to get into it at some stage
