Some people here seem to assume that most of us own a 1000cc/600cc sports bike (CBR1000RR/600RR, ZX10R/636, GSXR1000/600, R1/6 etc..).
http://www.kiwibiker.co.nz/forums/showthread.php?t=32341&highlight=gsx+most
but I know for a fact most of us that I have met, they ride CBR 250’s, old sports bikes, sports tourers etc…
not all of us crave a sports bike either, speaking for myself I find them a pain in the ass to own, because I do a lot of round town work, and most of the B-roads I ride aint too flash.
It seems too, that most of the sports bikes tests are conducted on racetracks now, so for the commuting, touring, and a few social rides, I don’t feel the need for more that 80hp, cause of my endangered license too. I had a GSXR once, liked the power, but found it to be a pain around town, so I took it down the streetfighter route. Any thoughts? For power I’d prefer a Honda hornet 900.

Yeah,it's pretty sad the choices some people make when they buy a bike....we can only hope they come to their senses at some stage.

Having 165RWHP like loosebruce has is good for keeping your licence too...
I like harleys and dirt bikes I also love scooters, but I own a sports bike because I enjoy riding it the most.

Errr, that's why we can put what bike we own into our users details. Therefore no need to make assumptions...

Bike nagagzine did a comparison in the latest issue., to see if sportbikes are licence losers. They gave three guys known to have a healthy disrespect for speed limits, a R1, FZ1 and a Rocket 3. They sent them over three different routes and checked their average speeds.
The FZ1 was faster with all of them except on open roads and motorways where the R1 tempted them up to 240 k's plus. But in the narrow tight stuff they were all much faster on the naked bike. The Rocket was universally disliked.

Dosen't seem to matter what i ride it's no good for keeping your licence, but a rather powerful bike does have some advantages.
I dont know where that asumption came from but okay your point is well valid about practicallity (half of which is why my bike is now track only)(coromandel is a track though!), but it doesn't take much effort to realise that a lot of poeple are on a lot of different bikes, and a lot of people do buy high powered sports bikes and never even come close to riding them hard, but hey it's there choice thats the bike they wanted and thats the bike they brought, who are we to judge? :whocares:

Oh groan another one of these "I woulda if I coulda" but I didnt so now those that do ride sport bikes are dicks, threads. I have a dirt bike, a commuter, an old girl and a new one and I ride em all (not at once) and get lots of enjoyment out of each of them. Why? Because its what I do in my spare time. Ride motorcycles.

i ride a 15 year old Sports Tourer.. alot of us ride the big barges.. Biff, Blackbird, Lou, Hitcher.. a few ZZR's in here..etc etc..we can kep our licenses, take the Mrs. to Welly , commute, and still give a few sportbikes on KB the learn..
its NEVER the bike..its ALWAYS the rider ( think JSG on Bruce's GSX-R1000 v. Rossi on a street magic.)

I had a GSXR once, liked the power, but found it to be a pain around town, so I took it down the streetfighter route. Any thoughts? For power I’d prefer a Honda hornet 900.More power than you can use 'today' is great. Finding how to use the 400s engine effectively was a great adventure. Then I rode the 750. New adventure!! I think this one will be a little tougher than the last one though. I'm a bit apprehensive about pushing it. Anyway the 750 is wonderful around town, just forget about gears; any old one will do. My old 250 v-twin was similar, excellent for puttering around. Not so good on the attack though. The 400 farts around below 7000rpm and requires a nervous left foot.
We all get different things out of motorcycles. Me, I like the challenge of.. Well, not quite mastering, that is too strong a word. But getting a lot of of the vehicle. And the soundtrack.

I quite like my newish 600 and find it a hell of a lot more practical than my old ZXR250 shitter for a number of reasons:
1. It's realiable compared to the ZXR
2. It's got heaps more storage space under the seat.
3. Brakes are suited to the power it produces giving awesome stopping power.
4. Handling is very good and way more responsive than the ZXR.
5. The seat actually has cushioning, unlike the ZXR which was a leather covered wooden plank.
I guess there are heaps of newer 250s and sports tourers which would better the ZXR so yeah the comparison could be said to be bias. But in all honestly the 600 sports bike is all good comfort wise and find that it's really not hard to keep to the speed limit if you want to. Though I do think a 1000's power would be pretty overkill, then again I'm only 60kgs.

The 1000's horsepower is probably overkill but the torque isn't. I just got sick of wringing the crap out of my 600 and I still wanted a full on sportsbike so it was a natural progression.
Now I can ride around and not be carrying loads of rpm's all the time. The 600 was good for shorter blasts but gets a bit tiring after 700km in a day (I loved my 600 to death on long trips until I had a demo 1000 and then swapped back to mine).
In saying that, I have done the step up thing from 250.....600.....1000 and can't say enough about how beneficial it is to learn how to thrash those little ones first :scooter:.
Enough being serious.......1000's are just plain addictive, they just never stop accelerating

I have a small dick, a stressful job and a problem with authority. A sportsbike was cheaper than the psychiatrist in the long term.

Yup, done the 750-250-400-750-accident-250-750-1000 thing myself. Really enjoyed learning to ride hard on the smaller bikes (the first 750 was a GSX750) but luuurrve the way my thou accelerates from anywhere in the rev range.

lmao, smallest bike I've ridden (and my first) was a Honda C50. We lived near the edge of the township, so out of my driveway and up the road at 60km/h I would go. Felt like the coolest kid in the world. My brothers C90 would show about 90km/h, when he wasn't around and I nicked it it would anyway!

Fkin fair weather riders.
"oh but it's broken"
Pussy.

Done the sportsbike 'thang'. Too uncomfortable and compromised for my liking. So now I ride a proper bike.
I've never ridden a sporty 4hundy. Lurrve to though. I jumped from a 125cc (max leaner capacity in the UK) to 6hundy +. Kinda shame.

hmmmm, I like my 7. Not the newest bit of kit around, but a very controlled delivery of 100+hp. Will apparently only wheelie when provoked (not happened yet) and not having to worry as much when mid corner, is handy.
However, the blardy carbs are a pain, rough, and not happy trundling. The low revs around town (3500 or less) also cause the plugs to foul, which I need to get sorted. Give me my bike, with fuel injection, and a bit more power, and I would be a very happy chappy.
Unfortunately, 1.5-2km per month means it'll rack up the k's seriously quick, and I will have to upgrade... then you'll see me on a newer bike...
