I have a friend who has an Hp desktop. He gets a letter a moth ago to say thanks for paying it off etc.

Now it sounds like the motherboard had bit the dust (keyboard and monitor dont work). tried different keyboad screen over phone etc.

This happened a month after the warrenty expired.

Is anyone out there know much about warrentys.

The life of a pc is more than 1 year 1 month.

i dont think he should have to pay for a new mb

Any ideas?
any help would be great :)

Sorry pal.
Your friend needs to double check the accompanying papers to see if by any chance motherboard is under manufacturer's warranty, but that's highly unlikely. On the bright side though motherboards are cheap.

First you have to establish what the cause of the fault is, to do this you will need to get it checked, prefferbly through an HP authorised repair centre.

If they can confirm it has failed prematurely as opposed to outside influences ie power surge, vermin etc, then irrespective of warranties it should be covered. Automatically goods are covered by the consumer gaurantees act anyway.

Then approach HP, see what there reaction is, if unfavopurable then there are options open to your friend ie small claims.

If the company has any srcuples and the damage is caused by premature failure then they should take care it.

Good luck.

its easier to get blood from a stone (yes blood, water is far too easy in comparison) than from companies like HP, unless you know some one.

Good luck!

HP/Compaq's home market is small compared to its business workstation market, and generally they couldnt give a rats arse about home users.

But as the man says motherboards are cheap. Unless he tries to buy a genuine HP/Compaq part in which case the price will be 50 times its worth :-P

Warranties come second to the CGA. If he can show it's not 'fit for it's intended purpose', which includes expected service life, he'll have a claim.
